Stone-built Cottage In A Tranquil Setting With Views Over Rosedale

**Rates reduced by 10% from 22nd August to 27th September**
The Mushroom House is a stone-built cottage in a small row nestling on the eastern side of Rosedale about 1.5 miles outside Rosedale Abbey village. It is in a tranquil setting on a road which ends further up the dale and so has little traffic. The view from the front of the house looks out right across the valley of Rosedale with its farmhouses and extensive fields.
The row of old iron-miners' cottages is made up of a mixture of permanent residences and second homes and so the area is consequently very quiet and peaceful. You can step outside the door, pull on your walking boots or get on your bike, and set straight off into Rosedale and the surrounding moors and dales for a gentle stroll or a serious jaunt – whatever suits you – there are no pressures out here away from it all.
If you want to explore a little further then in a one-hour radius you have everything from the wonderful seaside town of Whitby, the quaint Runswick Bay, the magnificent Castle Howard, ancient York, pretty Helmsley and even a theme park at Flamingoland not to mention Scampston Gardens and Dalby Forest. This is just a small selection and there’s more information in the Location section of this site and in the box full of leaflets and guides in the cottage itself.
Rosedale Abbey village has two tea-shops and three hostelries (all serving food) and there are other excellent places a few miles further away such as the New Inn at Cropton (with its own brewery) and the Blacksmiths at Lastingham. Then of course there’s always Whitby fish and chips!
The house itself has 3 bedrooms upstairs (1 with super-king-sized bed, 1 with double bed and 1 with single top bunk and a child's pull-out bed) and a lounge, kitchen and bathroom downstairs. We have decorated and furnished the house to a high standard so that our guests will feel well looked-after, relaxed and at home. The comfortable lounge has two sofas and an open fire. All three bedrooms are decorated in individual styles with lovely views from all windows. There’s a garden to play in at the front and a secluded lawn at the back ideal for barbeques on the fire pit.
The house has a modern and well-equipped kitchen as well as a modern bathroom with bath, shower, basin & WC (towels not provided). At the front of the house is a stone patio which looks out over beautiful Rosedale. At the rear is a secluded lawn backing onto the fields and ideal for sitting quietly or barbecuing.
If you want a real idea of the place then read the reviews our past guests have kindly written. We couldn’t have put it better ourselves.

A great cottage with great views of the Dale
The cottage is a short distance outside Rosedale Abbey and has an amazing view down the dale. It has everything you could need and is warm and comfortable. We visited in September and used it as a base to explore the moors. This was our first visit to the North Yorkshire Moors but we will definitely be back!

Gorgeous location & spotless, cozy rental
First off, a note of caution: please read the welcome info carefully, as you will need to bring your own towels and may also wish to bring paper towels and toilet paper (the latter is supplied but not abundant). I'm putting this at the beginning of my review because there is nowhere to buy these things without a 30-minute drive, so it's really important. This charming attached cottage is in one of the most peaceful and secluded locations I've ever stayed in -- in the mornings, you awaken to the sound of sheep and birdsong, and cars are quite rare. The gardens surrounding the cottage and adjacent dwellings are beautifully tended. The cottage itself was spotless and cozy: two comfortable couches in the living room, an enormous and vastly comfortable king-size bed in the main bedroom, thoughtful touches throughout. We would absolutely stay here again. To reach the cottage, there are several routes, but we ended up driving across the moor, which was a lovely introduction to this part of Yorkshire. The kitchen is very well-equipped. Here are a few notes that visitors may find helpful: dishwasher tablets are supplied, but only a few, so you may want to bring some for a longer stay; likewise, no laundry detergent is supplied; the bathroom can be quite chilly, so turn on towel warmer a few hours before you take your shower; best to bring your own spices, tea, sugar, etc.; dishes are in LR cabinet and silverware in table. Note: only bathroom is downstairs (tricky at night).

Clean and loved the coal fire. Very difficult to find in the dark. Perhaps a map could be provided and the locals didn't know where it was either!

Great Property in an outstanding location
The cottage is in a great location, just over a mile from the village of Rosedale Abbey. The views from the cottage are outstanding! Everything was provided for an enjoyable stay. A slight problem regarding bedding was quickly resolved, so this is not a complaint, it's a positive! Would definitely consider a return visit.

Amazing location
The property had absolutely everything you could possibly need and was very cosy. If you desired you could park up and just walk in a different direction each day. We walked to Rosedale Abbey and enjoyed the hospitality at the tearooms. There was the now closed iron mine railway walk just up the road too. Nothing was too far away - Whitby, Teesside carting, Thirsk for the World of James Herriot, Captain Cooks monument with great views & even Hawes (Wensleydale cheese), Carnforth bridge and Tan Hill Inn. Enjoyed the sights and sounds of nature too with the trickling stream, chickens, ducks, owls, pheasants, sheep, horses and highland cattle.

Rosedale Holiday
We enjoyed our stay at Rosedale a lovely country cottage. Beautiful views walks if you wish near the village and not far from Pickering and the main road wherever you want to go. The cottage was clean maintained and fairly modern but still had the country cottage feel. Very quiet and restful.

An ideal retreat
An early cleaning problem was promptly remedied. Although a bit remote the property is within an hour or so of many attractions - York, Castle Howard and the Yorkshire coast. The villages of Helmsley and Rosedale Abbey with their pubs are nearby as is the interesting Dale Head tea garden. Great walking country. The cottage was very comfortable and very well equipped

Fabulous!
We had a fantastic stay at The Mushroom House . The house was as described and the view from the front terrace was fabulous. We enjoyed walks to the kilns, day trips to Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay, Helmsley and the Malton food festival. Had a lovely meal at the pub in Rosedale Abbey. Would love to return and thoroughly recommend.

Cozy house in beautiful location
My husband, adult daughter and I stayed for 5 nights and had an absolutely wonderful time. The property itself is very homely, very well furnished and and has everything one would need for such a stay. The best thing for us was the stunning view from the front of the house. The property is also very well situated for visits to Whitby, Pickering and other smaller towns or just for walks in the area. Can recommend a visit to the Abbey Tea rooms in Rosedale Abbey and a visit to the Mallyan Spout waterfall, accessible from Goathland. The owners were very appoachable and helpful and I have no hesitation in recommending this property. We would love to stay again.

Wonderfully Rural!!
We enjoyed a lovely 5 night stay at the Mushroom House. The location of the property was wonderfully rural but still only a mile from the village of Rosedale Abbey where there are a couple of very good pubs. The house itself is very well equipped with everything we needed for a great short break and the beds were incredibly comfortable. The welcome gift of Prosecco and Chocolates were a lovely touch and very well received! The Mushroom House is well situated for trips to Scarborough, Whitby & York and the Moors are literally on the doorstep so the property would be excellent for walkers (we visited late December with 2 young kids so I didn't get a chance to lace up my walking boots on this occasion!). Overall, we would highly recommend this property and hope to visit again in the near future.

Wonderful stay
We had a wonderful 6 nights in this property. It was very easy check in and once inside it was WOW!! The cottage was spotlessly clean, the bedding was best quality and the accessories in the cottage were in the best taste. The views are absolutely beautiful, I live in Cornwall but the views from this cottage were possibly better than I have at home. We were blessed with beautiful weather so we sat in the garden when we were home which is a sun trap. Only criticism is that there was no parasol to keep the sun of us when we were sat out. All in all a wonderful cottage in a beautiful county, I want to go back !!
