The Criterion has seen better days. They are renovating it, but not quickly. The rooms are plain and have some wear and tear to them. However, it is clean, there is a refrigerator, the water was hot and the pressure was good, it is on a quiet street, the staff are there 24 hrs a day (although there is no housekeeping on the weekends), and it is convenient to everything. It is also economical. which is why I booked it in the first place. If you just want a safe, quiet, clean place to rest your head, I recommend it highly. If you want a luxury room with a minibar to hang out in, go somewhere else.

The WiFi stopped working after the first night. The front desk staff weren't very friendly, and did nothing to resolve the internet issue. We had a balcony and there was rubbish on there from a previous guest.

Paint peeling, established funnel web spider webs and an undistinguished smell that actually leached onto my cloths. There is a difference between art deco and old, dirty and decrepit. Immediate area around hotel , late night and early morning, felt unsafe with homeless , drunk and prostitution going on . Do not recommend and will not be returning

The Criterion was Ok -- serviceable. The location was central, in an area with fast-food restaurants, and with walkable access to the downtown area. There is one small place near the hotel that is slightly seedy, but I didn't feel threatened. The hotel has seen better days, but again, is serviceable. The bathroom was nice, the TV worked, beds OK, although I didn't see any heat source in the room (fortunately, it wasn't quite cold enough to require heat). The main drawback was that the wi-fi didn't reach to the third floor where our room was, so we had to go down to the lobby to do e-mail and messaging. I believe the first floor may have had wi-fi, but we were on the third floor. The late-night McDonald's was just a half-block away, which compensated for any inconveniences for jet-lagged travelers from LAX, 21 jet-hours away plus layover time!

This hotel was perfect for the stay I needed. Affordable and within the city. The staff were quite helpful also! Our only issue had nothing to with the hotel or its staff but noisy neighbours! The building is quite dated and rooms are definitely not sound proof so you hear every sound. Thanks!

The hotel is very good for budget traveller,comfy bed and good shower,house keeping clean,tidying room everyday ,change new towels,Hotel is very close to Hay street mall,plenty good restaurants near Barract street ,Red CAT free bus few step away,close to Mciver station connect Airport central.I will come back here next trip to Perth

There was a matress in the foyer where the male receptionist obviously slept. Although the cost for the overnight stay was deducted from my credit card, when I checked in, I was required to pay a $200 dollar bond!!!! Never encountered anything like that in any hotel I have ever stayed at!
