Matakanui Retreat, located in the settlement of Omakau, offers a cozy countryside stay just 35 minutes from Alexandra. This tiny house sits by the rugged charm of Central Otago. Central Otago is sunny, dry, and brown, with weathered ancient mountains, alpine herb fields, and fast-flowing rivers. Our local recommendations:

- St Bathans is a historic gold mining town in the Central Otago region with a lake where you can go swimming.
- Naseby is an old mining town in the middle of the Naseby forest, often referred to as the jewel of the Maniototo with an indoor curling rink, and walking and mountain bike terrains.
