We named our mountain home “Almost Heaven” because when we are there, that is exactly what it feels like to us. At 3,000 feet in elevation, we are close to the stars at night, to the clouds by day and we are witness to gorgeous sunrises and sunsets all year long. When the summer heat is burning up the low lands we have fresh, cool breezes and even sweater weather in the evenings. We look out 40 miles to Mt. Mitchell in the north, ten mountain ranges to where the sun sets in the west and 60 miles to a flat line in the south. We are surrounded by nature, astronomy and meteorology, yet we are a short 35 minute drive to Biltmore House and the excellent restaurants of downtown Asheville, and 20 minutes from Black Mountain and its quaint shops, restaurants, and gigantic grocery stores. We hear the wind in the leaves and catch the sweet smell of Rhododendron and Mountain Laurel in the springtime; we pick wild blackberries in the summer and listen to songbirds all day. We frequently encounter deer, wild turkey and even bobcats, yet we live in a modern, luxurious home with a gourmet kitchen, satellite TV, instant hot water, wonderful beds and mattresses, and windows everywhere to frame the beauty that is all around us. Our home is built for both togetherness and privacy: the family room has a monumental stone fireplace surrounded by leather sofas, the covered side porch serves as an outdoor dining area, the basement offers ping-pong and Foosball tables and three-quarters of the home is surrounded by decks and rockers – while every one of the four bedrooms has its own private porch for personal conversation or quiet reading time away from the larger group. It is the best of all worlds: natural, yet very civilized; remote yet convenient; private yet communal. It is Almost Heaven. We would love to share it with you!

Almost Heaven is an amazing property! The house is very nice, super clean, and well stocked. The views are incredible and this was a perfect place for our family. We made trips to the Biltmore and downtown Asheville then retreated to the very quite paradise that is Almost Heaven.

The cabin was well equipped with whatever you might need. The owner responded very quickly with my one question upon arrival. The cabin is not very close to much of the hiking trails, so expect lengthy drives. Overall, it is a nicely kept cabin that is also very spacious.

Quick Mountain get away
Peaceful, comfortable, restful! Had everything we needed, and more. Drive up the Mountain not for sissy’s! Get groceries for your stay at Ingles in Black Mountain, fabulous supermarket. Should you decide not to venture one day, have enough food to manage for the day!

Great Family Spring Break Getaway!
Beautiful mountain home with breathtaking views! There was plenty of room for my family of four and my parents. The kitchen was well equipped and my seven year old daughter enjoyed the Ping pong table and foosball table in the basement. The owner is really easy to work with. There's so much to see and do around this area.

Views from the property were beautiful, we even saw a rainbow on two nights while we were there. The house nicely accommodated our family. Communication and check in were very easy and the instructions were perfect. The ride to the house takes some time to get used to the uphill climb and narrow roadways. We had a wonderful time

It lives up to its name! The views were breathtaking and the house was beautiful! The owners provided so many extras like games, key board, hammock etc. The only small thing was the water pressure was a bit low and the road to the house a bit narrow and steep. I would still go back in a heart beat though! Thanks again!

Amazing views!
Came up with a group of friends to celebrate my husband’s 50th anniversary. Chose the location because the photos in the listing were beautiful (and they are completely accurate) and it’s close enough to drive to places if you want to go do something. We went into Asheville and Black Mountain but we were all happy to head back to the house to hang out on the porch. We definitely want to come back. Annette was so sweet and helpful to work with.

Amazing!
We were the first to stay in Almost Heaven and we are so thankful that we chose to! The owners were helpful and wonderful to work with, the location was not too close and not too far from everything there is to do in Asheville and the scenery and views were just BREATHTAKING! The house is comfortable, clean, and well appointed. We used the kitchen with ease and made some delicious meals that we enjoyed on the deck overlooking the valley and mountains. I feel so grateful that we got to have such a beautiful, comfortable place to enjoy our North Carolina excursion and would tell anyone who asked us to use VRBO and especially to visit Almost Heaven!! Thank you so much!

Gracious, well appointed, calming, beautiful, comfortable, clean, overall most excellent. We wanted to be centrally located to as many waterfalls as possible. We were. We wanted to be in a quiet place with no light pollution. We were. We wanted views! We got them. My husband and I needed this getaway more than we knew...we got so much more than we asked for. The last couple of days our granddaughters joined us. They enjoyed the stay as much as we did. I just cannot gush enough. And the hosts! Super responsive to my emails, which were few because we didn't need to ask much of them at all. They had anticipated every single detail.

Beautiful, Peaceful View
Although the mountain view rivals none, our experience was a mixed bag. Pros: Breathtaking views all around; peaceful quiet. It is was rainy and cloudy most of our stay, so I hope that speaks volumes. Morning coffee and quiet reading time on the decks when the sun did come out was just awesome, especially hammock and one of the upper decks. Laundry was easy and appreciated. Our teens loved the basement with device plugins, couch, foosball, and ping pong table. We had a lot of laughs with fun competition. Netflix and wifi was a plus. Kitchen has basic supplies such as cups, oven pans, utensils. Cons: We joked that the check-in process to get gate keys felt like an Escape Room. But humor aside, it was a bit daunting and confusing, if not a tiny frustrating. The new entry code method for front door was so much better. This is also possible for the gate entry as well, which we saw on some of other property boxes. Although the sheets and towels were clean and okay quality, it just wasn’t quite homey, organized or clean. No blankets with your sheet and thin quilt. For example, kitchen cupboards had random items thrashed about; the oven mitts had crumbs and crusted food, etc. With family photos on the walls, it sort of felt like we were just coming in while the family was out. No real care to organize and pay close attention to detail in a cleaning sense for guests. Probably most notable was the dirty duck-taped remote control. The showers and bathrooms left a lot to be desired with water pressure and cleanliness. It just didn’t have a warm, comfortable, clean feeling. All the rules were a little overwhelming, especially the trash; but after I explained our predicament with packed car, the host was understanding and flexible. The ride is extremely steep and narrow. That said, it’s doable. There’s not a lot to do nearby. So, maybe a stay-at home retreat would be more suitable for this location. I feel bad giving a mixed review but want to be honest, too. My expectations were not met, but we certainly made the best of it.
