Beautifully renovated period property in great location
'Cottonwood', located in the highly sought after inner city, historic village of Carrington, Newcastle NSW, is a stunning, fully renovated, cosy, comfortable and elegant home.
Originally built in 1910, 'Cottonwood' is one of the oldest homes in this charming and interesting harbour side community, which many describe as a 'country village near the city'.
Carrington is widely being billed as 'the Balmain of Newcastle' due to its history, workers' cottages, cafes, restaurants, parks, as well as being surrounded by the working Newcastle harbour on one side and Throsby Creek on the other, and its fun and 'happening' vibe and superb lifestyle.
Carrington is just 2.5 kms from Newcastle's CBD and only 10 mins' drive to Nobby's (surf and patrolled) Beach. Other popular beaches such as Bar Beach and Merewether are just a few minutes further on.
'Cottonwood' was extensively renovated and extended in 2020 and further renovated by the current owner in 2024, is a 3 bedroom /2 bathroom luxury home.
It generously sleeps 6 guests (1 x king, 1 x queen and 2 king singles), all on the multi award-winning 'Sleeping Duck' mattresses, with lovely, high thread count (eg 600 on the king singles) cotton sheets, doona covers plus cotton/linen throws and extra pillows.
'Cottonwood' offers guests;
* Ducted, zoned air conditioning in all 3 bedrooms, which are very generously sized (average 4 m x 4 m each)
* Reverse cycle air con unit and ceiling fan in the lounge room
* Main bedroom that overlooks the north, grassy charming courtyard, has walk in robe and beautiful ensuite featuring soft green wall tiles, hand made in Spain
* High-end ultra modern, well stocked kitchen with stone benchtops, French door fridge/freezer, Miele oven, cooktop (with wok burner), and dishwasher, natural gas, plenty of cupboards and everyone's favourite - the sparkling, chilled water on (Zip) tap.
* Slow combustion fire for cosy winter nights in the open plan lounge, dining, kitchen
* Main bathroom has a free standing bath located under a big skylight for relaxing, literally under the stars at night, plus rain shower head and custom joinery.
* The 2 enormous bedrooms in the original part of the house have wonderfully high (10.3 feet) ceilings, and all 3 bedrooms have picture rails and new white plantation shutters that befit a charming, character home.
* The ultra contemporary extension at the back of the home features open plan lounge with cotton and linen sofas, a smart tv, gorgeous coffee table books and novels, a super cosy working wood fireplace, cook's kitchen, and a fabulous dining area with blackbutt timber ceiling, built in bench seating, loads (17, last count!) of quality cushions, plus an extra 4 x dining chairs and country style, large timber dining table.
* A sunny, gorgeous, quiet and very private north facing grassy rear courtyard with outdoor dining for 6 guests amongst a new 'country style/cottage' garden planted with olives, magnolias, flowering prunus trees, gardenias, lavenders and lots of herbs for the picking.
The quintessential lemon tree has been planted in September 2024, but it might be until Summer 2025 before it bears lemons for the GandT's!
* The whole open plan living opens up completely with adjacent double stacking sliding doors - creating a super 'feel good' alfresco space, with lots of light, fresh air and a superb ambience. Sitting in the courtyard at night, looking at the stars, is a favourite 'go slow' experience.
*Complimentary use of ladies' cruiser bicycle with wicker market basket for leisurely local exploration.
* Electric outdoor bbq, umbrella and picnic basket plus other baskets for guests to use going to the farmers' produce markets, held at the v popular MOA and Co cafe, every Fri - Sun, and just a 5 min bike ride /4 blocks from 'Cottonwood'.
* The charming east- facing front verandah is a great sunny spot for a morning cuppa, watching the world go by or a cute spot for an aperitif in the evening!
* 'Cottonwood' also offers a well-fitted out laundry with blackbutt custom joinery, 'smart' washer /dryer and a generous sink.
* Everyone loves the original 1910 bricks re-purposed to separate sleeping from living sections of the house and everyone (except the owner's mother and the brickie (!), loves the striking Porters' banksia patterned, charcoal and white feature wallpaper in the king singles bedroom.
* North facing study nook overlooking the back garden/courtyard with blackbutt timber custom joinery, data points and framed by a cute outdoor herb planter box
* Complimentary WiFi
* Extra features added in the 2024 renovation include new marine grade fly screens, additional sky lights, new white plantation shutters, new lighting, new wardrobes, new sliding barn doors, new vertical joint (VJ) feature wall cladding in two bedrooms and lounge, two new, purpose - built 'cute as a button /Brighton Beach style' timber huts in the back garden (one for firewood, one for the cruiser bicycle available for guests to use), and completely new gardens.
Carrington offers a walk/cycle everywhere lifestyle including to;
* 5 local cafes
* Earp Distillery (founded in 1880 and a v cool bar/restaurant and host of events, experiences eg gin making and excursions to the Hunter Valley)
* Young Street Hotel (listed in top 20 bars of Newcastle by HunterHunter - an excellent source of all things happening in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and the Hunter)
* The v popular and family friendly Carrington Bowling Cub
* Fancy (some hatted) restaurants such as Frenchies in Carrington, Flotilla, Humbug and the v popular Baked Uprising, featured in 'Good Weekend' magazine in 2024.
* Throsby Creek - which is just 2 blocks away and where you can cycle/walk along the dedicated paths amongst trees and picnic and throw your kayak in.
* A dedicated cycle path along the Newcastle harbour, grassy foreshore (great spot for picnics) all the way to Nobby's Beach, Honeysuckle waterfront where there are loads of cafes, restaurants and the ferry to Stockton.
Carrington also has a heritage walk - maps available - an IGA, bottle shop, post office, chiropractor, 2 x hairdressers, beauty spa, fire station (built in 1915) and a v popular Japanese restaurant/ supermarket (Kitami), which has been operating in Newcastle for some 30 years and is now 5 doors' down from 'Cottonwood'!
There is simply nothing like 'Cottonwood' in Carrington - a fully renovated, character home that blends ultra modern with the 1910 original home, where no expense has been spared and guests are superbly catered for. It's truly one of a kind.
Strictly no pets, no smoking and not suitable for children under 10.
