The entire upper floor is usable space with the exception of the stairs in the front hallway leading down to the front door, this is an emergency exit only. There is a private entrance located under the hanging whale, leading to a private stairwell to the upper apartment.
I am just minutes away, as is Steve, my trusted friend, handyman and cleaning enthusiast. There is a message board at the foot of the stairway with contact information for both of us. I am also always reachable through the Airbnb app by text or call. I may appear now and then to work in the yard or restock and say hello. I enjoy meeting and chatting with my guests if I get the chance. But I also understand that privacy is important so I will leave the level of interaction up to each guest.
The Hideaway is located in a quiet residential neighborhood. It is within walking distance to L&M hospital, Dunkin Donuts and The Recovery Room Restaurant, a local favorite. Menghi Street is a private road with no through traffic. It is quite bumpy at present so drive slowly. We are trying to get the town to pave it, but haven't succeded as yet. The property is approximately 3 blocks from the Thames River where there is a small free public beach access with parking accross the street. It is a very short drive by car to Fort Trumbull, Ocean Beach Park and Captain Scott's Restaurant (another local favorite).
You can easily drive to most attractions with abundant free parking. It is a short drive or robust walk to the train station, bus terminal, ferry dock, and water taxi. Uber and taxis also are readily available.
One bedroom has a nice sized closet. Two of the bedrooms don’t have traditional built-in closets, typical of older houses. These rooms have imaginative areas to hang clothing and a dresser for further storage. This may seem like an issue for longer term renters, but to date no one has seemed to mind. On the contrary, we’ve garnered many reviews praising the home’s quaint charm and roominess. If more storage space is desirable, check out Captain Cod’s Quarters on the lower floor with 2-3 bedrooms, each having a traditional closet. Or storage can be arranged for in the attic, assessable by an adjoining set of stairs off of the largest bedroom.
Please refrain for using candles, incense or having any open flames in the house.
And enjoy the firepit, but please make sure the fire is out before you leave it unattended.
