"DO NOT STAY HERE. We were hoping for a resort-style place to unwind for a day before we travelled to Sapa. We arrived at 6am hoping for an early check-in. We paid NZD90 for a night and were charged USD80 (NZD120) to check in early. Breakfast was sparse and tastes awful - this place had the worst selection we have encountered so far. The place feels eerie, like you're in a horror movie. Everything smells like cigarette smoke. The only other guests we saw were what looked like Chinese high rollers...

"Very convenient location -- rooms overlooking the lake have a great view including the mountains (but the lake was unfortunately dry during our stay). Staff extremely helpful but almost no English. However, the manager/owner (Mr Thanh) was often around or available to consult by phone. Breakfast rather limited, though you can get Vietnamese filter coffee and milk if you know to ask for them. No lift, so you might have to walk up three flights, although staff will help you with bags."

"Really helpful we checked in really early tired from the train and were helped with every request by all staff. We looked at other hotels when we stayed in Lau Cai and were glad we stayed here. Lau Cai is a fascinating place with the Chinese Border and the Red River. a couple of days is a good rest here. I had to change plans often and The Lady Manager helped me with Facebook messages in English changing dates and arranging a cheap transfer to Sapa."

They won’t give us a room with a view, even though we were the only people staying there. We had to keep our curtains closed throughout as it was directly to an open top of the next building. At checkout, we were asked to pay for our room again! On our insistence, they let us go, as I said’ we paid for our room when we booked! Nice hotel, but the insisting that we have not...
