Lakefront & Mountain cabin with firepit on Lake Hiwassee -“Bear Paw” Murphy, NC

You will feel like you are in a treehouse while staying at this lakefront cabin located on Lake Hiwassee nestled in the Smoky Mountains. Lake Hiwassee is one of the deepest TVA lakes that sports over 160 miles of forest shoreline bordered by the Nantahala Forest and so over 90% of the shoreline is undeveloped. The result is that there are few homes on the lake, and very little boat traffic as it is off of the beaten path and mostly surrounded by state and national forests. This is a huge lake located in the Smoky Mountains, and offers the best of both worlds -a pristine lake set in a magnificent mountain range.

This SMOKE-FREE AND PET FREE cabin has four bedrooms, three tiled bathrooms and a loft. "Cabin" doesn't do it justice as guests are surprised by the comfortable furnishings. There is over 2400 square feet of living space and another 800 square feet ocomprised of screened porches and decks. Two of the bedrooms are located on the main level. The master bedroom has a king-size bed, and the private bathroom has a jet tub as well as a shower. The second bedroom on the main level has a queen-size bed, and the second bathroom is located next to it. Both of these bedrooms have a private deck.

There is a fully equipped kitchen with stainless appliances, custom cabinetry and Silestone countertops. There is a bar area off of the kitchen with bar chairs, and the main dining area is located on the screened porch off of the living room on the main level. We have bamboo trays (sitting on top of of chair on the landing leading to the loft) for when it is cold outside, or if you and your guests want to eat on trays and watch tv.

There are hardwood floors throughout the main level with a bar area and stools located off of the entrance area. The entrance hall has stairs leading to the loft which has a full sized sofa and is a perfect nook for children who want to slip away. Also located on the main level is the great room with a vaulted ceiling, a wood burning fireplace, plenty of comfortable furniture and large French sliding doors that lead to the screened porch which is the perfect place to enjoy your first cup of coffee. In addition to the seating area, there is a long wooden table with benches to provide plenty of room for your family and friends.

The downstairs is carpeted and has a large den with two couches (one two-seater and a full-sized sofa), two bedrooms, a bathroom and laundry room. There is also a built-in desk for a private work area if you are planning on taking a “Workcation”. One of the bedrooms has a queen-size bed, and the other has two sturdy wooden oversized bunk beds. The bottom of each bunk has a full-sized mattress and the top is a twin. Off of the downstairs is another huge screened porch that has a hammock and a ping pong table. We like to sit upstairs on the screened porch off of the main floor and listen to the teenagers as they are playing ping pong or talking on the dock. It is amazing what you can learn!

Just off of the downstairs screened porch is the fire pit and grilling area that has a gas and charcoal grill complete with four Adirondack rocking chairs for your comfort. It's just a short walk down the steps to the dock which has an amazing view of the lake and mountains. The dock is the perfect spot to rest, read or just relax and enjoy the view.

Our lake house is located in Bear Paw which is a private gated community, and the only residential community on the lake, which offers many amenities including a full service marina, large swimming pool, tennis, volleyball and pickle ball courts, a covered pavilion, basketball court, fishing pond and a children's playground. Mountain View Marina is located inside of Bear Paw and has a boat ramp if you want to bring your own boat. The marina will rent boats, kayaks or paddle boards by the hour or day and is a short drive from the cabin and even a shorter ride by boat. They are extremely friendly and have pontoons for rent which are simple to operate for the boating novice. Since this is a TVA lake, during the winter months, the lake level is usually dropped an average of 38 feet. Lake Hiawasee is one of the deepest lakes in the TVA system and is 308 feet deep at the dam at full pool and navigable year round. The cove behind our cabin is about 25 feet deep at full pool, and there is a dock behind the cabin where you can park your boat. Since the TVA lowers the water level during the winter months, you will not be able to dock a boat behind our cabin from about November thrul March. However, the marina has short term slip rentals available so you would be able to rent a slip for your boat and enjoy the lake during the winter season as the marina is located on a deeper part of the lake and has water year round.

We do offer free WiFi, and have a landline that you are welcome to use to make outgoing calls. As for cell reception, it depends on your carrier, and it seems that Verizon works best in the area.

This is the perfect vacation as it offers the perfect get-a-away for everyone whether you like the mountains or the water. We are only a 45 minutes drive to Blue Ridge and are located in Cherokee County, NC where the casino is located. There is transportation (see Town Car Services) to the casino. World class whitewater rafting is nearby on the Ocoee River or on the Nantahala if you want a calmer journey or just want to enjoy tubing down the river. There are miles of bike trails as well at the white-water center.

Great cabin
We loved this cabin. Plenty of room, beautiful view, private dock, and two screened porches. The main level porch was our go to spot morning and evening. The owner clearly cares that her guests enjoy their stay.

great stay
we have stayed at this home several times and enjoyed it each time. location on the lake is amazing with a dock that is easy to access. the kitchen is small but all of the other features (many bathrooms, 2 living areas, 3 bathrooms, screened in deck) more than make up for that challenge. the pricing is affordable, the community pool is a bonus.

Great Stay!
The cabin was charming and cozy. Great amenities, plenty to do outdoors and in. The area was beautiful and the weather perfect. The host was awesome and checked on us periodically to make sure everything was good and even had extra wood brought during our stay! She was quick to respond to any questions we had with helpful info about the area. Overall I'd give this cabin, the area and the host 5 stars! We hope to get back in the future.

Such a beautiful escape!
What a relaxing, peaceful, and beautiful place to vacation. The lake house is beautiful, clean, and cozy. The views are spectacular. The beautiful screened in porches and huge jacuzzi tub were a great bonus. Walking by the water and watching the fog, clouds, and sunrise over the mountains were a highlight for me. My family loved exploring the shops in town and making smores at the fire pit. Great communication with the home owner!

Lake Retreat
This is the 2nd time my family has stayed here and we couldn’t ask for a better vacation. Beautiful lake, perfect weather, beautiful house. Rented a boat and kayaks from the marina, went whitewater rafting, fished, and swam to our hearts content. Awesome memories! Can’t wait to book again!

Great place on the lake!
This property was great and even better than advertised, particularly the beautiful hydrangeas that surrounded the front entrance as well as the back. There was plenty of room and everything was well maintained. There are LOTS of steps but the railing down to the lake made traveling the steps safer.

Cozy Cabin
Lots of character and charm. Very cozy cabin and very clean. Also very well-stocked. Bit of a hike (~35 min) to get to town/to the nearest store in the fall, as the marina closed down, but that did add to the feeling of getting away from it all. Had a fire going every night that we stayed (in Nov) and enjoyed the outdoor table and screened-in porch.

Perfect family vacation
Everything was perfect from the moment we got to Mary's cabin! Plenty to do right at the cabin, we never left. We fished, swam, played ping pong, watched a movie waiting on the storm to pass, and grilled out each night. The porch was the best place to eat our meals together. Everything has been thought of and felt at home with a well stocked house. I can not recommend this cabin enough!

The Best Yet
Our family has been enjoying various rental cabins for the last 15 yrs and this one by far takes the cake. From the well stocked and beautifully decorated cabin to the unforgettable memories made at the dock we could not be happier. Our host was by the far the best and communication is wide open. If we could give mor than 5 stars we would.

Perfect, Relaxing Weekend!
We had a wonderful weekend at Wright's Roman Holiday lake house. The accomodations were great andn the space in the house was not too much or too little for our group of 4 children and 4 adults. The kids loved the loft and where they slept in the lower level of the house. The favorite hangout for the adults was the screened in porch right off the living room. We will definitely be back to rent again!

This property is a perfect place if you are looking to get away from the rest of the world. Service is not great if you use AT&T, but we were happy to be unplugged. We fished off the deck and played games at night. We were excited to watch firefly's at night. The cabin had everything we needed.

A Fun Spot
Grandparents, parents and grandchildren gathered and loved this fun setting! The ping pong table was a BIG hit for all ages!! We loved the porches SO much gathering there to sip coffee in the AM and our evening meals! Nice to have the grill and fire pit also for S'mores!! Lovely bedrooms! The kitchen was well stocked, but rather small - not suited for more that 1 or 2 cooks in the kitchen!! Overall a lovely experience!!

Lakeside Paradise
We walked into the lakehouse and had a sense of comfort. The pictures don't convey peace and calm. Other family members staying in Bear Paw were impressed, too. The pool, pavillion, playground, courts and marina were a lot of fun. The dock was easy to tie up to when my cousins came by with their pontoon boat. Beach is next year but hope to come back the following summer. Best part was big back porch! A weeklong rain didn't dampen our spirit!

Great place for a family vacation!
We loved our stay at O’Malley’s best! It was amazing having direct access to the lake with the private dock. We rented a boat and brought it right up to the dock so we didn’t have to leave the house, very convenient since we had children. Mary is very helpful and responds immediately. We thought the outdoor dining area might be hot as we stayed in mid July but it wasn’t at all! Ate every meal out on the deck. Used the grill and fire pit for s’mores. We plan on visiting again soon!

Just what we needed!
Had a great long weekend with family of all ages and we all had a great time, would love to come back when the lake isn’t dry but still nice scenery and the screened porch really feels like you are in a big treehouse. Although each of us brought a lot of things from home that we expected to need, it turned out that the cabin was very well stocked and we didn’t really need to bring anything but clothes and food. Mary Frances was most helpful and accommodating, and it was a pleasure dealing with her!

Relaxing trip
We had a great relaxing trip. We’re a family of 4 (11 and 15 year old) from Chattanooga and wanted something different but close. The cabin was very well appointed with all of the cooking essentials- including salt, pepper, spices, pots and pans. The cabin was comfortable and roomy. We very much enjoyed the ping-pong table! As a family from Chattanooga, we understood that we were on a TVA lake and it was lowered- Mary Frances also made sure we understood. But if you’re unfamiliar- it is pretty dramatic. Overall, great trip at a great cabin. We hope to return soon!

Amazing stay!
This property was perfect for our group of 6 adults and 3 children. Everybody had plenty of space to be together or get some privacy. The kids loved the bunk room and playing games in the loft. I loved reading and drinking my coffee on the patio in the morning or walking down to the private dock to fish with my son. The water is so clear and refreshing, time spent down there never ended without jumping in. I highly recommend renting a pontoon boat from the local marina to check out the beautiful lake. The homeowner was a breeze to work with - very responsive and so helpful! We cooked all of our meals there and the stocked kitchen had the utensils, pots/pans, spices, appliances… everything we needed. The neighborhood feels extremely safe and people around are friendly. Book it!

Nice lake home
We came for a short stay to fish and enjoy the lake! It was a beautiful home with a short walk to the boat dock. The owner was wonderful to work with and kept in touch to make sure we did not need anything. This is a great home for a large family or 2 families to come enjoy. The only difficulty was how hard it was to get our pontoon boat into the lake at the marina and hard to find somewhere to store the trailer. Next time would put boat in at a different marina and leave our trailer somewhere public. This is in the mountains and the community has very tight roads and small parking areas. But would go back again!

A wonderful fall experience!
We brought the entire family (11 people) to visit the Fall Festival at the John C. Campbell Folk School. The event was wonderful as always. The house was also great! There were ample sleeping spaces for all 11 of us (8 adults, 1 teen, 2 kids). The house was very clean and well furnished. As a flatlander, I didn't think about all the stairs that would be involved in this type of mountain house, but once we got our older family members inside and settled on the main floor, they enjoyed staying there. The porch on the mail floor was the hub of all the activity. Be aware that the only dining table is on that porch. We bundled up and ate out there for all of our meals together. Being there in the fall, we didn't get to use the lake, but we did enjoy the changing leaves and the quiet of nature. Mary Francis, the owner, was very responsive to all my questions. You will enjoy your stay.
