We own and personally manage 5 vacation rental properties on a lake in Michigan with 47 acres of woods & trails...with 11 years under our belts we well know what it's like to be a vacation rental house homeowner.
This property could earn 5-star reviews if Carolina the homeowner would invest in correcting its shortcomings (some are safety hazards), as the house and grounds have the potential to be a really special vacation spot.
In our view homeowner Carolina needs to invest:
1) Replace all of the sliding glass doors to the deck and driveway - they are so old that some of them took two arms to open them, and our wives could barely manage. They also do not close tightly, so hard to keep out insects and the cute little lizards.
2) Do not list Ping Pong Table on the listing when there is not one; don't expect your Guests to drive somewhere to pick up a conversion top for the pool table (which the homeowner asked of us).
3) Increase # of pots, pans, large glasses, etc. Provide larger coffee mugs.
4) Fix the ice maker in the freezer compartment.
5) Replace the dangerous exterior stone staircase from upper parking level to the rear patio...this is an accident waiting to happen Have handrails on BOTH sides of all exterior steps.
6) Replace the sections of asphalt driveway near the house that is full of tripping hazards...buckled asphalt, pot holes.
7) Add a handrail from sliding door to the driveway since there is a step down that is unexpected.
8) Clear away much more brush at the kayak launch area...a little work will make it look like the owner cares.
9) For $3,000 per week rental fee, we do not think it's too much to ask that Cable TV channels be provided.
10) In advance send Guests with detailed arrival instructions. - we were never sent any.
11) Provide Guests with info on area stores, restaurants, things to do, etc. None were provided
112) Provide Guests with an email address for the owner...limiting written communications to texts or via Vrbo.com is not customer-centric.
Our group would happily return to this property if the above repairs and other shortcomings are remedies. We wish the homeowner Carolina all the best.
