NEIGHBORHOOD
Moltrasio is a small village on the western branch of Lake Como. Located between Cernobbio and Carate Urio, it is a short drive from the city of Como and the Swiss border. The apartment is close to the village center and the ferry pier. In the center of Moltrasio, you will find restaurants and small shops, a small beach, and lakeside villas. Nearby in Cernobbio, more restaurants and a beach await you.
GETTING AROUND
For convenience, we recommend guests arrive by car. The city of Como is a 15-minute drive away. Traveling without a car can be more complicated but entirely feasible. Buses from Moltrasio go to Como and other lakeside towns. Look for lines C10 and C20 operated by ASF Autolinee. The C20 stop is near the building. Tickets can be purchased from the driver (cash only) or at designated points in the area or in Como (see the ASF Autolinee website). Please note that buses do not run frequently and the service stops around 10:00 PM. Taxis are available but not easily reachable in the region.
From the pier in Piazza San Rocco in Moltrasio, ferries regularly depart for nearby towns. Schedules and tickets are available on the Navigazione Laghi website. Tickets can also be purchased at the pier. From Como, it is easy to reach Milan and Switzerland (Lugano, Bellinzona, Locarno) by train. Public ferries also depart from the center of Como to other lakeside towns.
The nearest airports are Milan Malpensa, Milan Linate, and Orio Al Serio in Bergamo. A direct shuttle can be arranged to and from the airport at an additional cost. For further transportation questions, do not hesitate to contact us; we will be happy to help ensure you reach your preferred destination!
TIPS
We recommend dedicating a day to visiting the wonderful towns around the lake. Como city is the urban center of the area, but the towns are gems with splendid lakeside villas.
To travel and walk along Lake Como, especially in small towns and in the mountains, it is necessary to wear comfortable shoes.
There are many public drinking water fountains in the area, and the water is safe to drink unless otherwise indicated. Tap water is also drinkable. You can bring your refillable bottle!
If you are looking for an easy hike in the area and still want to enjoy the mountain views, the Greenway of Lake Como is an easy-to-follow trail that does not require too much climbing. The Greenway crosses the small towns from Colonno to Griante. From Moltrasio, you can reach the starting point in Colonno by bus.
For nature lovers, the Via Verde crosses the woods and skirts the lake from Moltrasio to Laglio.
Look for traditional restaurants where you can taste local foods, such as dishes made with Lake Como fish.
In Italy, many shops (especially small ones) and services are closed in the middle of the day, so be sure to plan your shopping accordingly.
Lake Como is one of the deepest lakes in Europe and the deepest in Italy. Swimming and diving are prohibited in many areas and can be dangerous. For those who wish to dip into the water, however, there are some options. In Moltrasio, there is a small beach. The nearby Lido of Cernobbio has sunbeds and a pool. In Como city, there is an outdoor pool near Villa Olmo, but swimming in the lake is not advisable and is mostly prohibited. There are beaches in other lakeside towns. A small and charming beach awaits you in Careno. Please note that it may be crowded on weekends. Locals and visitors also love to go to Nesso, where the more adventurous can dive into the lake from the ancient Roman bridge near the waterfall.
The Lido of Bellagio and the pebble beach of San Giovanni await those who wish to venture further and explore the beautiful town of Bellagio, located at the center of the two branches of the lake.
Lake Como is located in a mountainous region. The surrounding Pre-Alps do not seem very high, but the climate is still influenced by nearby mountains, and temperatures can change quickly. Pay particular attention to weather conditions during excursions and bring warm and waterproof clothing!
