“A river seems a magic thing. A magic, moving, living part of the very earth itself.” ― Laura Gilpin
There is nothing quite like a stay at Goldsmith's River Front Inn. The Bitterroot Apartment is our largest space, and features 2 suites combined into one. There are 2 patios, 2 full baths, one King bed and one twin trundle bed. There is a fully stocked kitchen, washer/dryer, and TVs. It can comfortably house up to three at a time.

Just blocks from downtown and the University, with an unmatched riverfront location! Easy access to hiking and biking trails!
Goldsmith’s Inn is a historic, three-story, brick home that was built in 1911 as the University of Montana president’s house. The house has served many University purposes over the years; it was once a fraternity, a lab, and an office space, among other uses.
In 1988, the building was slated for demolition to expand university parking. Amidst community outcry over the planned destruction of the historic and beautiful home, the Inn was saved by the Goldsmiths. In order to preserve the home, the Goldsmiths undertook an audacious plan to move the 4000 square foot house from the southern edge of campus to the northern banks of the Clark Fork River. The home was then fully renovated to create six classic and comfortable rooms, each with private, hand-tiled bathrooms and other modern amenities.
For over twenty years, the Goldsmiths have been welcoming guests into the beautiful home to experience the wonder of Montana and a piece of Missoula history.
Please note, we are now a vacation rental property (not a traditional bed and breakfast), meaning self check-in-and-out, and no daily breakfast. These precautions help our guests minimize contact with each other, with us, and with our staff. Thank you!
Free on-site parking, a private entrance, access to nearby riverfront walking/biking trails, and easy access to downtown and the University make this spot a hidden gem in Missoula! Enjoy two of your own private balconies, as well as access to a larger shared patio next door.
We do not live on-site but are available via email and phone.
We are in the heart of Missoula right on the river! Drum Coffee and Black Coffee Roasters are super close as well as all of downtown!
Market on Front is just a short walk down the river to grab coffee or a breakfast burrito, and FINN is about a block away for drinks on their riverside deck, or a nice dinner.
Just across the river and the walking footbridge (all steps from the front door) is the University of Montana and hiking on the "M" trail, or Kim Williams trail.
Albertson's grocery store is also a block away, where you can find Starbucks and a variety of fast-food restaurants. We are convenient to the interstate as well.
We'd suggest trying out the river front trail! It's about ~.75 miles to downtown. Otherwise you can also bike, or drive. If you drive, we recommend using the 2 parking garages and then walking around from there (the 1st hour and weekends are free in the parking garages, and they are free on weekends).
If you are looking to rent bikes, unfortunately the next-door shop is unable to offer this service. However, the Bicycle Hangar Downtown rents all kinds of bikes, and are about a 10 minute walk away!
This listing is a private apartment in a *former* Bed and Breakfast. It includes access to private laundry, kitchen, and both a river-facing and mountain-facing balcony, as well as shared access to a next-door river-view patio.
You will see signs for Goldsmith's Bed and Breakfast - that's us! Please park on the west side of the lot in front of the house, not in front of the bike shop. We are located next door to Big Sky Bikes.
After parking, you will walk along the side of the building towards the river, and take a right up the porch. Continue to the front door, enter your front door code (provided in check-in instructions), and proceed to the second floor. This apartment will be the first door on your left on the second floor. It will be marked with a #5, and a sign next to it indicates that it is the Bitterroot Apartment.
