We recently stayed at Casa de la Luna, the first week of March 2018. The owner Lizette and her husband Gino are super nice! The architecture of the home is modern, and it is tastefully decorated. The welcome basket when we arrived was also a nice touch! We enjoyed morning coffee on the patio and swimming in the Gulf. We were also fortunate enough to see dolphins swimming by, off in the distance, and wished we had brought a pair of binnoculars. If you do not want to cook while on vacation, Chelem has many places to eat. Each day we enjoyed many adventures, including a trip to the Mayan ruins at Uxmal, which are vast and impressive (bring water, sunscreen and a hat), then we ate lunch at Hacienda Ochil which was delicious and the grounds are well kept. We also swam in many cenotes (water shoes recommended), We also went on a day trip to the horse rail Cenotes of Cuzama. Some of the cenotes are more challenging than others, so if you would prefer to have a guide and transportation, we would highly recommend checking out our friends at yucatancenote.com who can set up a custom tour for you. If you decide to drive around exploring on your own, we would suggest having a full tank of gas and bringing along a cooler with ice, bottled water and snacks. It is also fun to go into Progresso on the days the cruise ship's come in, when all the souvenir markets are open and the Port is bustling with people, and Progresso has a very nice boardwalk. Also, there are several large grocery stores to choose from in Progresso. Watching the sunsets over the Gulf from the beach at Casa Luna, is spectacular. It is amazing that the big orange ball of sun can set within a couple of minutes from the time it appears to be touching the water. Also, there are many towns and villages which are great to visit, where the markets are a daily way of life and it is a perfect way to enjoy the people, food and culture. If you would like a fine dining experience we would suggest Hacienda Xcanatun which is near the capital city of Merida, making reservations is recommended. We also enjoyed going to "Land's End" which is past Chuburna (a short drive), and there is a new pier in Chuburna which is also nice for a walk and where you will often see local people fishing. There is just so much to see and do in the Yucatan! Thank you Lizette and Gino for letting us stay in your home. Casa Luna is a great place to stay!
