The Neighborhood:
St Kilda East is a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 6 km south-east from Melbourne's Central Business District. It is located within the local government areas of the City of Glen Eira and the City of Port Phillip.
Quiet and residential, it is quite different from the adjacent suburb of St Kilda. However, the area around Carlisle Street is very diverse with a strong arts, alternative and indie community.
The St Kilda East area was part of the lands of the Boon wurrung tribe of Indigenous Australians before being first settled by Anglo-British settlers in the 1850s. Smaller timber shacks were common during the early 1860s to 1870s, with larger houses on the bigger subdivisions. During the late 1870s, terraced housing began around the railway line.
Keep an eye out for little penguins at the St Kilda Breakwater, visit the Sunday St Kilda Esplanade Arts and Craft Market, and get a thrill ride at the iconic Luna Park. Re-live genteel resort days as you take a dip in the heated seawater spas and pools at the historic St Kilda Sea Baths.
Join locals who walk, cycle and skate under the palms on the foreshore or sail, windsurf, kitesurf or kiteboard on the bay.
Book for fine dining at Donovans, Stokehouse and Cafe di Stasio. Enjoy margaritas at Radio Mexico. Catch live music at the Palais Theatre and the Prince Bandroom or a show at National Theatre and Theatre Works. See the latest exhibition at Linden New Art or a double feature at The Astor.
Choose the street to suit the mood. Fitzroy and Acland streets have cool cafes, restaurants and bars, fashion boutiques and independent music and book stores.
Hear many European languages on Carlisle Street. Grab a bagel at Glick's Cakes and Bagels, a coffee at Wall Two 80, or lunch at The Local Taphouse. Share the Jewish experience at the Jewish Museum of Australia.
St Kilda Festival
Get carried along with the crowds at February's St Kilda Festival. A week of music and comedy performances culminate in Festival Sunday, which sees the streets closed to carry on the suburb's historic penchant for revelry.
