This is essentially a pole barn, and I assume it was once used as one, as indicated by the slight farm smell inside. The fact it's wide open is NOT a negative it's nice having room to move around, and the sleeping arrangements just work. Nobody (5) of us bothered the other while sleeping or staying up later than the rest. It worked out great. The kids played a game of pool, and we all fed the alpacas out back with nuts provided by the host.
The host showed up shortly after our arrival to welcome us and was very interested in sharing information about the area, asking what our plans were, and providing ideas and suggestions for things to do and see. Note there is a neat "downtown" area we wished we would have made it to town sooner to check it out.
We visited both the north and south islands, and my kids, both 17-year-old boys, liked this area of New Zealand the best; the rest of us mostly agree, but it's hard to compete with the south island if you're into hiking and nature.
