Secluded Hideaway Cottage By Mt Stream Near Hiking, Biking, Skiing, Hot Springs

We both have lived in this unique and peaceful part of the Sierras not far from Lake Tahoe for over 40 years, and when we met 27 years ago and were searching for a piece of property on which to build our dream home, friends would ask us where our favorite location was. It was always Alpine County, and more specifically, a stretch of the West Fork of the Carson River which meanders through the famous old Ace Hereford Ranch. Miraculously, in 2001 a small 20-acre section of the ranch became available, complete with an old rambling Cliff May ranch house badly in need of repair.

After purchasing our dream-come-true, concurrently with the restoration process, we began building a cottage near the main house for our retired parents.

The property is resplendent with willow and wild rose thickets providing a protective home for quite literally hundreds of California Quail as well as the occasional Mt. Quail and elusive Chukkar. It wasn't long before the site became affectionally known as Quail Hollow.

The cozy cottage was built in the Arts and Crafts style by local friends and craftsmen, utilizing green materials and local stone. The numerous windows in every room welcome the rising sun in the East and take full advantage of the awe-inspiring view of the Carson River and the stunning volcanic basalt cliffs beyond. The kitchen, living room, dining nook and reading nook are all part of a spacious yet comforting great room which invites conversation and comraderie. The sleeping areas are quiet and comforting, the patios soothing and restful. The local wildlife which may include bobcat, raccoon, beaver, wild turkeys and muskrat often saunter past the dining nook window, and of course the ever-present quail and hummingbirds appreciate an occasional handout, the former showing off their adorable families of tiny 'quailets' throughout the summer months. Bald and Golden Eagle soar overhead, Jays nest in the nearby pines and Cliff Swallows build their mud colonies on the cliffs.

A peaceful presence can always be found here, whether the Autumn colors have begun to dazzle, a dusting of fresh snow is on the ground or when the summer-blooming lavender is ahum with bees, as the sounds of the city and the pressures of everyday life are left far behind. Come rest your spirit here, explore the area, paint a landscape, work on the story you started to write, bring several favorite books to read, and return home refreshed and rejuvenated.

Wonderful
We had a wonderful stay. The place was amazing and felt like a home, not a rental. So many special details. And our host Susan treated us like friends coming for a visit, rather than vrbo renters. She is a gem, and so is the place.

Wonderful !
Susan's cozy cottage is a great place to relax and recharge. The cottage is very private. The location, right along the river, can't be beat. The patio and several seating areas and french doors all face out to the river, so that one can enjoy it's presence even indoors. The bedrooms are set at either side of the house, with a large living space in between. It had pretty much every amenity that I could want during our visit.

Amazing setting for a secluded weekend.
My husband reserved this beautiful property for my birthday weekend. We only spent 2 nights here but could easily see spending a week or more. The minute we arrived, we set up on the patio outside the living room/kitchen area to listen to the Carson river and soak up the beauty of the eastern Sierra, watch the quail and humming birds, read and enjoy. The house is spacious and nicely furnished. The kitchen had all the tools, dinnerware, and accessories of a well stocked house, which made preparing meals a joy. The king bed was particularly comfortable. Susan was very responsive with questions via phone and text. I'm so glad we discovered Quail Hollow. We will be back!

Peace and tranquility
After a crazy summer kitchen remodel and the start of school for my daughter and me (I'm a teacher), our family needed a peaceful getaway and that is exactly what we found at Quail Hollow. When you pull up to the gate of the property and see the amazing bluff, when you get out of the car and hear the rushing river, when you meet the delightful owner, Susan . . . you'll know you've made the right choice of property. The entire area is incredibly beautiful with lots of hiking opportunities, and yet Markleeville with a great brewery and market is just a short drive away. As for the house and property, the pictures don't do it justice. The view is jaw-dropping and the house itself is gorgeous and incredibly cozy. A bedroom and bathroom are on each side of the house, with a wonderful living room with stunning fireplace and comfy reading nooks -- a great fit for our family! We hope to return, sooner rather than later!

Pretty Much Perfect
Quail Hollow is a beautiful home placed in a beautiful, serene setting on the Carson river. I actually saw quail one day and birds of all kinds flock to this place, only adding to the charm. I found myself recalling other reviewers words and thinking 'Accurate. ' Basically, if you choose to stay here, you'll be making the right choice. Though lovely, the photos don't do the space justice, it's warm and clean and has everything you need; it's laid out perfectly for two couples, with each bedroom on opposite ends of the house, each with it's own private patio; the daybeds are a dream space; the sunroom is my personal dream space; there IS a flat screen tv tucked away, but we only used it once because the Fireplace is The Best and is engaging all on its own; also, the bathtub will convert you if you're not a "bath person" just give it a try... Susan is the perfect host and I look forward to hanging with her next time we stay, which I'd say is unusual for a rental scenario! If you stay here, please respect the space, read Susans guestbook, it's well-written, entertaining, and informative- I felt like I would have had a different experience if I hadn't read it the first night honestly. Phew, long review! Thanks for everything Susan and see you again soon!

Quail Hollow is a treasure
This is our third time staying at Quail Hollow, and it is just a dreamy place to get away from it all. The house is stunningly beautiful and cozy. And Susan immediately feels like an old friend. We can't recommend Quail Hollow enough!

Wonderful peaceful property
Quail Hollow is a very comfortable, quiet, and peaceful home in a beautiful and private environment. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. It’s proximity to the river made the property even more wonderful. We really enjoyed meeting the property owner, Susan, she was very gracious and helpful. We will return.

Tranquil retreat on the river
We visited this lovely home in mid October. It was the most relaxing vacation ever, and probably the nicest place we've visited via VRBO. The owner, Susan, is just the nicest person and lives nearby. We enjoyed visiting with her during our stay. This home is located overlooking the west fork of the Carson river. The location is close to both mountains and high desert, and is a short drive to Hope Valley, South Tahoe as well as Minden and Gardnerville. Staying here you may decide you don't really want to visit any of those places however, because the setting of this home is so relaxing and secluded. I enjoyed sitting out on the patio, watching the birds and squirrels and listening to the sound of water rushing by. There are no immediate neighbors, no light pollution at night, and it is far away from the sounds of traffic. The stars at night are plentiful and bright. Fall colors abound as the house is surrounded by trees and native shrubs. If you love nature, and quiet reflection, you will enjoy this home.

A slice of Heaven on Earth
My husband and I have visited this sanctuary that we fondly call our "home away from home" I believe 5 times as of the present time. I discovered Quail Hollow quite by accident (or so I thought it was by accident) when I realized another spot we had rented in the past was in a "renovation" mode so was unavailable to rent. After our very first visit I realized it was NO accident that I found this place and instead realized there was indeed Divine guidance involved in us finding this place. Every time we visit our souls receive the "refreshing" that is so deeply yearned for and is so hard to get in a "big city", hustle, bustle type environment that we live in. We have 3 kids and have consciously made the decision to leave them in the loving arms of grandma on each trip we have made here. For whatever reason my husband and I find it very hard to impossible to take the ever essential "date nights" together away from the kids during the week so instead, after 11 years of raising kids, we have finally found our replacement(this "little slice of heaven") for the "date night" that works for us. And I give all credit to Susan and Roger who have so graciously opened their cottage to souls like us so that we can find some revitalizing serenity, sanity, and balance in a world that many times is poised on the edge of insanity. The spirit here that is so obvious if you just tune into it is one that is so inviting and calming that it makes it soooo hard to leave. The only thing that makes leaving any bit bearable is knowing I will return very soon to once again soak up her beautiful, refreshing, spirit that invigorates and revives the soul. My husband and I will continue to visit this place on a regular basis until the day we die. There is so much more I can say about this wonderful place but I feel like words diminish and muffle the true value and beauty of this place so some things are better left unsaid. Just a few last comments. I know I am reviewing a "place" but I have to comment on the people behind the scenes. As a result of our visits I have connected with Susan, the owner of the cottage, on a personal level and cannot speak more highly of her. She is a beautiful spirit and could not be any more gracious and caring. I know that it is only due to their spirit that our experience at the cottage is as delightful as it is.

Quail Hollow
My family had great time in the cottage during winter vacation. This was the best vacation house that we have ever stayed at. The house was well designed and comfortable. The view was gorgeous from every window. The cottage just totally blended with nature. My teenagers enjoyed reading by the windows. We loved the fireplace and the big, modern kitchen. It is also not too far from the ski resort. Susan was so kind to give us all the information. We would love to come back in the future. I think the cottage would be perfect for any season.

A truly unique cottage
We stayed at Quail Hollow during the July 4th weekend this year with my parents. We had a wonderful experience. The cottage was just the right size for our family (4 adults and 2 kids). The view is every bit as beautiful as the owner describes. The roaring sound of Carson river, which is just a few steps down from the nice back porch, can be heard from almost every room. We spent countless hours relaxing in the back porch watching Stellar's Jays, California Quails, Anna's Hummingbirds, Butterflies in an idyllic setting. Inside the house, the owners have decorated it tastefully, with a very personal touch that I have not found so far in any of the vacation homes that we have stayed in. We also cherished the warmth with which Susan, the owner, greeted us, and stopped by the next morning and shared the history of the place with us. We will surely come back, during fall when the aspens would be in full glow, or maybe in spring, when the birds would possibly find Quail Hollow as the favorite stop during their northern migration.

Good Privacy for a Get-A-Way
We visited this property for a family holiday. Best for 2 couples and a couple of kids, but it could sleep 3 couples in separate rooms, plus 3 singles if you utilize the sofas in the living room. It was comfortable, but expect more house-feel as opposed to a quaint cabin in the woods. Through no fault of the owners, some localized junk on nearby reservation land detracts somewhat from an otherwise pristine drive to the property. The small dining room table can only handle 4-5, with an additional 4 at the counter. The back patio/yard area is the greatest asset, having a nice view of the river just a few feet away. It is secluded enough to afford good privacy, but still within 5 min of a small store or 20 min to Minden, NV for major things. The owner is very nice and makes a point of checking in. Bring a DVD player, as it only has a VHS deck and a CD player. The non-holiday price seems fair, but we would suggest updating pots & pans, linens and some furniture, such as the main sofa, dining table and bedroom mattresses over the next couple of seasons as part of regular maintenance. Overall we thought it was good.

Serenity Pesonified
We had such a great experience in the Spring that we looked forward to our visit in the Fall. It did not disappoint. We love Quail Hollow. The fireplace and lay-out of the home is perfect. The sound of the stream and the glorious colors of the trees were heavenly. Susan & Roger are perfect hosts. Hopefully, we shall return when we need a quiet retreat.

Perfect in every way
We've been to dozens of VRBOs and other vacation rentals and this has been the best: The setting, the house, the location are perfect. Everything is top-of-the-line, clean and welcoming. I have trouble finding eco-friendly rentals that don't set off my allergies to chemicals and strong fragrances but Quail Hollow was perfect in this way also. Finally, Susan, the owner, was wonderful.

Wonderful Location to Relax and Enjoy Nature
The cottage is every bit as beautiful as shown on the website, and very comfortable. The best part is the patio, visible thru the dining area window, that is only a few yards from the Carson River. It's so relaxing to sit on the lounges on the patio, watching the river and listening to the sound of the water as it courses over the rocks. The trees are full of birds, including hummingbirds that constantly visit the feeder right next to the lounges. In addition to the large couch, there are two comfortable reading nooks with an excellent view of the secluded back yard. The kitchen is very functional, and we prepared meals at the cottage all but one night. We drove a short distance to Genoa, NV for an excellent dinner at La Ferme, as suggested on the website. We took advantage of some of the nearby hiking trails each day, and our son-in-law added a 50 mile bike ride and several long runs out of the many options available. We are definitely planning to return to the cottage in the future, and I would absolutely recommend this to anyone - it was a wonderful family weekend that we certainly hope to repeat again!

Spectacular scenery right at your doorstep
This is a very special mountain getaway. The quality of the setting and construction of this gorgeous home is just amazing. Never seen the like before! So peaceful, with a stunning river view and local wildlife outside the backdoor. Nicely furnished with a full, well stocked kitchen, and beautiful landscaping. Close to South Lake Tahoe. I enjoyed perusing the great variety of books on hand. The radiant heating keep us cozy the whole time.

Peach and Tranquility Abound
Quail Hollow Cottage more than met my expectations. The home is more wonderful than even the photos can display. This property provided everything I was looking for - a beautiful (and very clean!) home, nature surrounding me, and plenty of hiking and sightseeing opportunities. Susan and Roger was THE BEST hosts and will be my friends from here on.
