LOCATION
Losinj is connected via a bridge with Cres island and is the largest island in the Adriatic. Although it remains very much unspoiled by development, there are plenty of adventures to be had.
If you can tear yourself away from the beautiful local beaches then the town of Mali Losinj (20 minutes) makes a great day out. The town, which dates from the 12th Century, is famous for its large harbour and 19th-century villas in nearby Čikat bay. The Museum of Apoxyomenos is the island’s main cultural attraction. The museum focuses on the bronze statue of a Greek athlete which dates from the 1st century and was found almost completely in tact in the sea off Lošinj. The Aromatic Garden is not only a fragrant retreat but also serves delicious local food.
For self-catering there are some supermarkets in Mali Losinj and an excellent fish market where you can purchase the freshest fish to cook at home.
There are several watersport schools on the island where visitors can learn to sail, windsurf or surf, and the pristine sea means that there is excellent visibility for snorkelling and scuba diving. Away from the water you can parachute, rock climb and take a cycle tour through unspoiled countryside. Excellent facilities to play tennis are also available.
The island is only reachable via ferry from the Croatian mainland. The closest international airport is at Rijeka (2 hours 20 minutes including ferry).
