LLANES (Council of Llanes is a municipality in the province of Asturias, in the north of Spain. It extends for about 30 km along the coast at the eastern end of the province, Llanes is bounded to the south by the high limestone ridge of the Sierra del cuera, which rises to more than 1,100 m. The region is part of the Costa Verde (Green Coast) of Spain, all that is known for its spectacular scenery of the coast, with 32 white sand beaches, and mountains covered in a mantle of dark green. Llanes lies north of the Picos de Europa, a mountain range whose geology is almost entirely of karst limestone.
Most of the inhabitants of the district live in the coastal plain, in which the largest large city is Llanes itself, with a population of around 4,000 of a total for the district of around 13,000. The folklore, food and festivals of the region are famous for their color and history.
NATURAL BEAUTIES:
Torimbia is one of the most beautiful beaches on the coast of Llanes. It has been popular since the 1960s because it is a nude beach. Access to the beach is through the village of Niembro, along the asphalt road to the hill at the top of Cape Prieto. This area is used as parking. From here a pedestrian walkway goes down to the beach.
Torimbia is classified as a natural beach, since it is surrounded by a spectacular landscape and has cliffs over 50 meters high, which are part of the north face of the flat mountain range of Los Llanos. The beach has a lifeguard, a Red Cross post and beach cleaning services, as well as a refreshment stand in the high season.
Mountains: Of all the district of Llanes the view towards the south is dominated by the wall of the mountain of limestone, that rises abruptly until 744 ms in L'Aba.
Many visitors, however, do not realize that the ridge that forms the wall protects the view of the highest mountain of El Cuera above which the highest point (in Llanes) is La Peña Blanca 1177 m. Between the two mountain ranges there are hidden valleys, which drain into cave systems. The largest of the valleys is La Llosa de Viango. Unlike the heights of the Picos de Europa, further south, the valleys are green and pastoral. All these mountains are in turn part of the Cantabrian Mountains, which extends through most of the north and northwest of Spain to the Pyrenees between France and Spain.
The distance between the House and Bulnes is 51 km which makes the house an excellent point for climbing and trekking in Picos de Europa. Climb the Bulnes cable car, visit the Jurassic park, the peace of Lagos de Covadonga and Ribadesella.
Caves: The district contains numerous caves, which includes a site of archaeological interest in Nueva, and Cueva Bolado near La Pereda which therefore contains ancient art, as well as open passages.
PARTIES:
Our Lady of the Council, is celebrated with a party on August 15. In addition, there are three major summer parties in the city: July 22 Magdalena, August 16 San Roque, and September 8 The Guide. These parties are organized by three groups, known as "Bandos", with followers in the town of Llanes; and each one tries every year to outdo the others and stage the best parties.
Outside the city, the various parishes and localities in the district celebrate the usual diversity of the festivities in honor of their patron saints, with an emphasis on La Hoguera ("The bonfire"), which cuts down a mountain eucalyptus that stands Then, in the village after the removal of branches and bark. This is celebrated in several towns, including Celorio, Balmori, and Pancar.
Famous is the Night of the Witches of Barro (a very traditional and popular celebration centered on the Asturian mythology), the celebration of Santa Ana, the patroness of Ships.
