Take time to enjoy a cool forest, bird song , frogs and the 10 minute walk down a quiet road to the golden sands of Ligar Bay .

Woody Mamaku Retreat is an unique and enlivening indoor and outdoor accommodation on the edge of secluded kanuka forest.
The cabin is a c.1950 steel kiln controller room lined in beautiful cypress from locally grown trees with views through a park like setting to the bay and beyond. This comfy room with double bed is connected to a small sunny front deck and a semi covered back porch kitchen and bathroom with a separate compost toilet 5 metres up the path. Built in local macrocarpa timber the cabin has a natural woody character.
It is off the grid , gas and solar powered with 4min eco showers to conserve spring water. There is very limited mobile phone coverage at the cabin but is fine at the beach.
By car its
5 minutes toTarakohe Harbour and rock climbing cliffs.
7 mins to Pohara cafes and bars.
15 mins to Takaka township
10 - 15 mins to Abel Tasman track and Wainui Falls.

Duvet, sheets, towels etc provided . (Please provide sheets if using massage oils in bed, thanks.)

Complimentary seasonal organic veges on arrival.
No pets . No smoking .

Awesome wee piece of paradise!
We were really just wanting a roof over our heads for our friends wedding in Tata Beach...but instead we found a real wee piece of paradise at John and Pene's place. It's a little bit of a shock to the system using a compost toilet (and showering on the deck), but the tranquil, private location meant we could really relax and unwind - surrounded by the fantails and Weka. The home-grown fruit and vege's were a nice touch too. Fully recommend this to anyone!

A Beautiful and Rustic Getaway
We had a wonderful time staying here. The location was excellent because of its proximity to Ligar Bay, Tara Beach, and Wainui Bay. The bed was very comfortable and the view was such a treat to wake up to each morning. The indoor/outdoor shower and kitchen made the experience feel connected to the stunning natural surroundings. And the hosts were fantastic communicators and very hospitable. Definitely would recommend staying.

This is a beautiful place to stay. Everything is so well thought of. The kitchen has everything you need. The shower was amazing. We loved the fresh salad and herbs left in the fridge on our arrival as well as the amazing tea, dried by Pene. Full of bird life, frogs, Pukeko and even hearing resident kiwis in the night! I would definitely recommend a stay here it was just perfect - We will be returning most definitely.

I unfortunately didn’t get to meet John & Pene, but also know they respected my privacy during the stay. This is a little piece of heaven with the cheeky Piwawaka birds being a highlight. Such a beautiful place to get away from the city. Golden bay always having a special place in my heart every time I go. Loved the outdoor shower and big comfy bed with stunning views. I loved this place! It had charm, character, privacy, quiet, wildlife. Felt like I was living alone in the NZ bush, yet it was close to beach, transportation. Hosts provided fresh fruit, vegetables upon arrival. Hosts were gracious, responsive. I’d stay there again and I will recommend it to friends.
