Very shabby hotel. Were told we couldn’t open the window due to hatching birds (!) and there was no A/C. Had paid for a triple room, but one of the beds was a roll-away stuffed into a twin room, with very little room left to move around. The roll-away bed collapsed every time someone sat on it, but they had to send staff twice to check because they didn’t believe us. Were finally offered a single room free of charge. Beds were uncomfortable, and the hotel was quite run down. Sad, because it is 300 years old and has a ton of potential. If only they would renovate it!

Hospitable
The first impression is that the hotel would need an upgrade, but I could see the charm of it as well. The personnel is friendly and has the correct hospitality approach. I have stayed in quite a few hotels on the island and Grand Hotel scores best in this.

I had no warning there was no elevator. It may have been in the description but I missed it. I definitely would have opted for a place I would not have to haul my luggage up and down three stories.
The Grand Hotel is part of the old town, Lerwick. Great place to visit Shetland Islands. Service is absolutely fine - breakfast, cleaning, strong wifi, tv... I have been there approx 1 week and I do not have any problems. I agree that the Grand Hotel is maybe little too old but ... the price is reasonable and - in addition - hotel employees are friendly. Quiet and pleasant.
The hotel is in an excellent location, staff are friendly and cooked breakfast was good. However the condition of the building is very poor. Our room (up 71 stairs, no lift) had a barely-functioning shower, peeling and stained wallpaper, and water damage and peeling plaster around the window. Flaking plaster from the ceiling fell onto the bed (and the sleeper!) during the night. No manager was on site to handle complaints.
The Grand is very tired. It is potentially a lovely old building in a precious location but there has been no investment in it for decades, apparently. Paint is peeling off the walls and ceilings. The reception is unstaffed and tatty. The staff are demotivated and have no wish to upsell anything ("Can I have a dessert?" "Sorry, I think the chef needs to be away by 9pm.") The bar is closed on Sundays and Mondays. The plumbing is gravity fed and so the shower is a trickle on the top floor.
On Sundays, many restaurants are closed in Lerwick, as is the restaurant in the Grand. The Queens hotel is the option offered for residents at the Grand. We were one of just two tables occupied in the Queens' restaurant on Sunday, served by unenthusiastic staff. There were many empty tables. At the bar in the Queens, we saw several customers turned away and advised to try the Chinese take away, as "we are full; we have to keep tables for residents from both the Grand and the Queens". The restaurant was almost deserted. Those potential customers were unnecessarily lost to the business and left with a bad impression of Lerwick.
The Queens is up for sale (£0.5m). New owners could transform the Queens Hotel and the Grand to exploit the superb locations and the latent demand from tourists to create great businesses for Lerwick and more jobs for local people. But the leadership, investment and customer service flair is just not there at present.
Breakfast great food, evening meal not so (very dry over cooked chicken in the burger). Breakfast service slow despite being quiet. Asked for tea and toast twice and still didn't get my toast. In a rush so didn't ask again. Dated and peeling decor in hotel. No lift in hotel so don't stay here if you struggle with stairs. My room had very little natural light.
Very friendly staff, and a good central location. But...
The hotel has seen better days. The fabric is in poor shape (damp patches on walls and ceiling of public areas. No elevator. No car park (use public one.) Rooms are cramped. Staff do the best they can, but the air of neglect is palpable. Hotel is on the market.

Dinner was not available during the advertised hours. We were told by the front desk receptionist that dinner was available until 9:30 p.m. This was also the time printed on a card given to us. At 9 p.m., we were told that the restaurant stopped serving at 9 p.m. and that the cook wouldn't accommodate us. No options were provided other than to try somewhere else.
Room/bathroom cleanliness not good enough, tatty and in need of updating, breakfast plentiful but cold and unexciting.

Grand Hotel. Lerwick. Former Glory.
In its day this must have been a magnificent building. It is now sadly a shadow of its former life. Met with an overwhelming smell of cooking fat running through the lobby and reception which is more like a mini bar located on the first floor. The hotel in general is in need of a major refufurb. The decor is in need of a major face lift. Wall paper misssing as you enter the lobby off the street. A TV in the room was mounted on a wall bracket and almost impossible to see as it was a 17inch flat screen which is more suited to a caravan than a hotel room. The room was clean and beds made daily. But if a concern is when you enter the bathroom and turn on the light it takes almost 15-20 seconds to come on.
Breakfast was on the other hand excellent. I recommend the locally caught fresh smoked fish and free range eggs. Homemade bread was wonderful.
Very pleasant indeed. An authentic historical stay. Very friendly and forthcoming receptionist. Spacious room, comfortable beds, great view, quiet. Excellent English breakfast. What more could you ask for?
