Nice, but needs WiFi
We stayed at the Hotel Avanshell for five nights. It was very difficult to be on vacation and not have access to WiFi. Since we were visiting over the New Year celebration, we wanted to look up the hours of business for some of the local sites, look up our flight information, etc. We were told to use the Starbucks in the mall, but that was a headache to set up. A nice Japanese woman helped us, but it still took an hour just to register. The hotel and staff are very nice...if there had been WiFi I would be rating this hotel much higher. Location is great, especially if you want to explore Gion
The only issue with this place is its location. Very far from central kyoto and requires more than an hour to get to kyoto station via public transport. Otherwise big room and space to put things. There are free shuttle bus services throughout the day but only every hour starting from 8am till 8:40pm. Can't go out earlier or come home later. So need to catch public transport.
Nice big room. Hotel bus is a welcome bonus. Close to attractions using bicycle. Hotel staff very friendly and when you get the right person better than the tourist information. Wish we could have stayed longer but was booked out. Just be aware that if you get a non smoking room you may still have a little smell, but that seems to be at a lot of places in Japan and was actually better than in other hotels.
My husband and I were in Kyoto for 6 days where he attended a conference. We stayed at Hotel Avanshell, which is a nice place. It is located conveniently in the quiet side of Kyoto City very much accessible by bus. There are a number of shops and malls near the hotel for any personal needs. I found the mattress saggy and the pillows too soft for comfort though. There is a TV but it only shows local channels in Japanese. Some of the room furnishings look old. I requested for a room with a view and the hotel did oblige. The front desk staff were nice and they tried their best to communicate in English
There is absolutely nothing i can say that can be construed as even slightly negative (except for the fact that their rate doubles on Saturday night). Every member of the staff I interacted with went out of their way to assist me. I was provided with maps and information that the staff had researched online and then printed it for me.Bus and train routes, schedules, maps etc etc. The room was ore than adequate, there was an ice machine. I use the "coin op" laundry with washers and dryers. The hotel is inside a larger building with a large supermarket, food court with many restaurants, department store, a fantastic German restaurant and bakery (try their rye with walnuts and candied orange peel). I would go back there in an instant.
A comfortable and spacious hotel offering good value. The location is slightly away from the sights but getting about by taxi or bus is fine. There is a good selection of resteraunts and a well stocked supermarket in the basement. The staff were very helpful although the business centre was only helpful if you had your own laptop. Wireless was available in the lobby
Nice wide beds for sharing with children. Joined to a shopping center which is so handy having supermarket, shops, food court so close for a longer stay in Kyoto. Post office and bus a very short walk. Free shuttle to the hotel to/from Kyoto station was really helpful too.
I'm not sure which countries the other reviewers are from who thought the room was too small but this is huge for Japan, and I think small to mid size rooms in America. The shower size was US size (which is amazing in Japan). The best thing about this hotel is that it's attached to a department store and the sushi restaurant on the first floor was the best sushi ever (and I am Japanese!!) shuttle bus from kyoto station so no prob on the location.
We were really impressed with the staff and overall value of Hotel Avanshell. The only negative was there is no wi-fi. However we found out towards the end of our stay that the nearby Starbucks has free wi-fi. The hotel accommodated two double beds for our family of four (two adults and two children) and the rates were great value as a result. Although the hotel is not located in the centre of Kyoto the hotel shuttle bus from Kyoto Station makes it a good location with a bus stop and major post office around the corner and train station 15 minutes walk along the river. Our hotel room had scenic views of the Kyoto mountains. The breakfast buffet was great value and a good start to our busy days touring beautiful Kyoto. Our kids loved the dinner buffet in an adjacent restaurant. The hotel staff gave us a discount card and our special dinner worked out very cheaply per person at 10% off. We soon worked out how to catch the local buses and trains to get where we needed to go. As well as being in a shopping mall, the hotel is 15 minutes walk from a 24-hour laundromat. For the daily room rate this hotel is very good value for families and the staff offer friendly helpful service. Don't forget to buy an all-day Kyoto City Bus pass from the hotel staff then catch Bus 206 around the corner from Hotel Avanshell to get to the city.
The hotel was a little difficult to get to as I took the 206 bus. The hotel actually has a shuttle bus service which I great and it should advertise the details of the timietable on the website because it would have been very useful for me.
The hotel was nice and there is s Starbucks near the hotel great for breakfast. Also there is a shopping centre with a food court if you get hungry next door. The room was bigger than I expected and was great it was in a quiet location which is really important to me. I don't mind it not being near the railway station as there is a bus stop nearby which you can use to get to the main sites and you won't get a hotel near all the sites as they are spread out. He best thng to do is either use the bus stop or use the free shuttle bus service to the station.

A Comfortable Hotel stay in Kyoto
We enjoyed a comfortable stay here at Hotel Avanshell. The hotel staff was so accommodating and worked hard to meet all our needs. I'll agree with other reviewers the furnishings are a bit old but everything was clean and well maintained. The hotel location wasn't near the center but they have a free shuttle to and from the train station at schedule times throughout the day and it was very useful to get to the center depending on the sites we were trying to see each day. The hotel is conveniently located next to a shopping mall with a Starbucks and a small food court. We also enjoyed a little german bakery located at the base of the hotel and if you need a western meal one night there's a very affordable little pizza place outside the hotel doors. This hotel was a great deal and a comfortable stay that met all our needs.

Poor location
Its hard to say anything bad about the hotel when the staff are so nice. However, the only thing I would have to say is the location can make it difficult to get to even when they have a regular bus service. The last bus was at 8:40, so you either went home on that or you pay the high taxi charge.
If you can live with its location then this hotel gives value for money in Kyoto.
When I read in some hotel reviews that this hotel is too far from Kyoto downtown I was a little concerned. But for sightseeing of Kyoto temples, shrines, parks, Imperial Palace, etc. it's a great location. Two minutes from 206 bus stop, which can drive you to all excellent places or to connection with other busses or trains. You don't need to use Kyoto subway at all. It;s excelent bus network and a free shuttle bus from hotel to Kyoto station every 1.5-2 hours. It's a big supermarket in the same building. The hotel service is excelent. You need minimum 7-8 days to see Kyoto and surroundings (Nara, Bodo, etc; for Tokyo three days is enough) so I highly recomend this hotel if you want see Kyoto and not spend the whole stay in expensive restaurants. The hotel rooms are not big, expecially when you compare with U.S standard. It's also not the Westin hotel, but it's really worth its price.
The hotel is slightly old, but comfortable enough for 2 person. The hotel is located in a neighborhood area and may not be convenient for tourists not familar with Japan. The most convenient mode of travel from this hotel is by public buses.
Hotel staff is generally friendly and helpful.
Rooms are nice and clean but a bit small for two persons. The people at the front desk were very helpfull and tried their best to help us even though their english wasn't always the best. The free shuttle bus to and from Kyoto Station was very good for getting to and from the hotel. The hotel os located a bit from the central area, but it is still close to the more historic parts of town in hagashiyama. We rented bicycles in a metro station rather close to the hotel and with them it was quick and easy getting around everywhere - much easier than using the public transport system.
