Lucky Hostel is cheap for a reason. It's not exactly the kind of place you'll go to unwind while being pampered. You get a tiny room with barely enough room for the bed, and you get a small bathroom with one of those shower "boxes" attached to the wall, showering all over the toilet and the rest of the bathroom. That's it. The room is reasonably clean, though, which is all that I think really matters.
The one major complaint I had was in regards to checking in. This place seems to be run by a husband and wife. I showed up around 10:30 PM, and neither one was available. There was a phone attached to the front door, though. I picked up and dialed 0. I heard some buzzing that seemed to indicate I had dialed the wrong number. I hung up. The phone suddenly rang. A man said he'd come.
Sure enough, a guy eventually showed up, looking like he'd stepped out of an 80s hair metal video. He let me in and explained everything in broken English. He then asked for a HK$100 deposit. I wasn't expecting that. He called his wife, who apparently has a better understanding of English. I talked to her. She said I didn't have to worry about the deposit. She then spoke to him, and he thanked me and left. Odd, but hey, at US$30/night, it's hard to feel ripped off.
Would I stay again? Sure. Would I recommend it to others? That depends on what they want. If you just need a cheap place to lay your head, you're good. If you need more, you may want to look elsewhere.
