We used this home as a backdrop for a video production with a local state agency. The property manger was great to work with and we even met the home owner! Great people, house was nice and easy to work with.
Everyting about this rental was really nice, except the level of cleanliness. Ants in the kitchen and master bathroom. Ant traps and spray in plain sight, including on kitchen counter. Crumbs on dining room table and kitchen floor. Oven and microwave fairly disgusting. Dirty dishes. Mold on shower doors. Carpets need at least a thorough vacuuming, but really need to be steam cleaned. I can't believe the owner has actually stayed in the house in a long time.
We were a group of 7 people from Iceland exploring the Willamette wine country for a few days. We had a very comfortable and nice stay. Can easily recommend this house.
We rented this for our family when our son in law graduated from the Paramedic Program at a local college. Having read the past reviews I came prepared with "ant" spray (there was some there too) and we did have a couple of encounters but nothing that could not be easily handled. We had one issue with the fridge and the owner came and took care of it right away. It is a beautiful spot on the river, the backyard has a table, fire pit and great seating. The guys tried fishing with a little bit of success. The beds were comfortable and we would definitely rent again if we needed a home in this area.

A lot of maintenance needed...but location makes up for it
I'll get the nit-picky stuff out of the way. Overall my wife and I felt "OK" about this property. We had stayed here before a few years ago and absolutely loved it. Unfortunately we did not have the same repeated experience. There was a colony of dead ants inside the master bathroom, and inside the kitchen. About a third of the lights didn't work inside the house, and the most of the ones that did were incredibly dim and made moving around at night a little tough. Most notably the toilet room light in the master bathroom did not work...so if any "business" had to be done the door needed to be wide open. The downstairs toilet seat was broken, which we also found out the hard way. There were instructions on how to use an Apple TV in the main living room, but there was no Apple TV. There was an Amazon Fire stick remote, but again no receiver connected to the TV. This place really needs some maintenance work, but the best thing about it is the dock they have installed on the river. That was not there the last time we stayed and it is frankly pretty awesome. I spent a couple mornings just sitting/lounging their listening to the birds and watching the water flow and it was incredibly peaceful. That really saved our experience for sure.

Dim and infested with ants
While the house was a good size to get our family together and had great views of the river, the experience was diminished by the ant infestation in the kitchen and the overall feeling of neglect.
We found numerous dirty dishes in cabinets and drawers that were feeding the ants. The ants were so out of hand that we had to store food in the fridge, microwave or stove to try to keep our food ant free. Ants were obviously an issue previously because we found dried up ant traps in the closet.
The house was also very dim. Many light bulbs were burned out and the ones that were there were strangely dim, you'd turn on a table lamp they put out just enough light to brighten the lamp shade but not enough to lighten the room. We ended up buying lightbulbs ourselves as there were only decorative bulbs in the house. Of course, when we replaced the bulbs the shades were dirty.
We found 3 folding tables in the closet but 2 of them were broken. The dining room chairs were also in poor condition and very wobbly. One of the table lamps in a bedrooms had a broken switch and couldn't be turned on at all.
Overall our general feeling is that that house needs attention. The kitchen needs a thorough cleaning and organization. The rest of the house also needs a spring cleaning and all furniture should be checked and repaired or replaced as necessary.
Highly recommend this as an escape to nature while having the conveniences of restaurants, grocery stores, etc. It was a great getaway for a family gathering. Highly recommend.
The house was perfect for our wedding weekend. It was important for us to have room for our.group and this was perfect. Rooms are upstairs, the fire pit was great and you can't beat the view of the river from the beautifully manicured yard. There were some items in the house that need attention but overall it was perfect for our.group. We would recommend this house. Our other guests loved it too. The owner is responsive
This property provides an amazing access to the Willamette River, from the patio fire pit, to the bank-level fire ring, to the floating dock. Just watching the river flow by from the family room is a treat!
The location was lovely, never tired of looking at the river. We had pretty ample room for our extended family which included a 5 year old all the way to 22 year old. The little boys fished off the dock and my grandson caught his first fish and he was delighted. The entry to the dock was a little precarious, requiring focus and steadiness, I think that was a problem. Two problems we had in the house was lighting, some of the lighting was too low to be effective and a number of bulbs were burned out. Also the pillows were terrible, thin and lumpy. I think it's time for some replacements there. The mattresses were good though, we all slept well. Also I don't think the cleaners were very thorough. Luckily we are not super concerned about that but there were dust bunnies here and there. This of course is not the owner's fault but I'm just saying. The neighborhood was lovely and extremely quiet. It was a good house for cooking, ample counter space and room for multiple people in the kitchen. I particularly loved the sunroom where I spent lots of time reading on the day couch. Very comfy. I did not contact the owner about any problems as they weren't deal breakers for us and I didn't want to bother them with such minor matters. They have a lovely home, I hope they are able to keep it for a long time.
Nice, quiet neighborhood with beautiful yard, outdoor gathering area and dock on the river. Enjoyed peaceful mornings on the dock watching the large fish and birds. Indoor space was smaller than anticipated based on the pictures. Beds were clean and comfortable. Sunroom definitely heats up in the afternoon, so use the room divider shade to keep the heat out of the rest of the house. 10 minutes to downtown Salem and 15-20 minutes to West Salem wineries. Overall, we had a lovely stay at The River Retreat.
The house is very spacious - a great place to get together with friends/family as we did. Nice back yard as well with grill and outdoor dining table. There are some ant problems in the house - with traps around. For us that wasn’t a big deal.
Took afamily trip to Oregon for my mom's birthday. It was perfect weather! Great layers in Landscaping to go down to the river & have a safe campfire! ( it is 3 flights of steps with railing & 1 slightly wiggle bridge) but amazing! There were ducks & geese. The river could put you in a trance for sleep. The driveway is long & spacious. The house was very relaxing! (TV is hard to figure out) there are 5 remotes but no Apple TV remote so download it on your phone if you want to try to watch TV. Kitchen is ready & easy for use. The BBQ grill is outside and was ready to clean up & use. Bathrooms up & down. Two flights of stairs so if you have real little ones bring baby gates for steps & bedroom. If you have kids maybe being a couple outdoor items small need balls or bubbles keeps kids busy. This is a home I would rent over and over again! I loved the easy find. Easy to settle in & great neighbors!
We stayed here for my son’s wedding!! The house is beautiful on the river and we had a wonderful time! My only issue were trying to figure out how to work the lights in the house and we didn’t have enough towels and then found a whole dryer full of them. The cleaning crew should have had them uploaded and folded. Would definitely recommend this property!!
