Summary:
Welcome to Cosy Dell! Located at the end of Cosy Dell Road and is one of the finest tiny homes in North Otago, directly alongside the Waianakarua River. The peaceful soundscapes of the river running, native birds chirping, and rich vegetation help you feel right at home in nature.
A river just outside your door, easily accessible from our property, with natural swimming holes in the summer and a walk along the river in the winter.
The Space:
Cosy Dell is located on the fringes of the town of Herbert, North Otago. Nearby Moeraki Boulders, Herbert Forest, and Steampunk Oamaru. Located in one of the finest tiny homes in the area, with rich vegetation on elevated land, providing complete isolation and views of the sun as it crosses the valley rim.
A comfortable 139-square-feet stay with easy access to water, a kitchenette with cooking equipment, and excellent bathroom facilities including a cassette toilet with a removable waste-holding tank, hand basin, and shower (gas-heated for hot showers) for your use.

IMPORTANT NOTE: A gentle reminder to guests that our property is located down the river valley with steep sides, and therefore recommend guests keep on established tracks.
Guest Access:
Guests will have access to the tiny house and surrounding areas, to admire the wealth of birdlife ,the occasional rabbit and might possibly be interrogated by our two small white fluffy dogs or black cat who are always looking for an opportunity to make more friends.
Guests are restricted from entering the land host's private residence and areas specifically marked ‘no access’. For the safety of guests, we have local CCTV cameras on-site. If you are interested, we have PRE-ORDERS listed below by prior arrangement with the host 24 hrs before arrival.
- A free bottle of spring water is presented upon arrival; additional bottles are charged at $3
- Continental of self-cooked breakfast is available at an extra cost of $18 or $25 per person respectively
The Neighborhood:
Cosy Dell is located outside of Herbert, North Otago, a 300-kilometer trip along State Highway (SH1) south of Christchurch, about 4 hrs and an hour's drive north of Dunedin. The stay is part of a supportive, tight community with safe, leisurely living in mind. We encourage you to take your NZ tiny house escapes here where you can explore various sights and attractions.
Our local recommendations:
- Steampunk Oamaru is a museum that combines Oamaru's rich Victorian heritage and modern (punk) art.
- Organic food and local produce stalls are featured at various locations along SH1 between our property and Oamaru.
- Moeraki Boulders is a popular attraction known for its large spherical boulders near Koekohe Beach, which are rich in Māori history.
- Herbert Forest is an isolated site with walking and mountain bike tracks about 20 mins drive from Oamaru and an hour away from Dunedin.
- Oamaru is the largest town in North Otago that offers a variety of restaurants, pubs, and food outlets such as the 'Del Mar' restaurant overlooking Oamaru Harbour.
- Kātiki Point is the southern point of Moeraki Peninsula. This short walk has commanding coastal views, you'll see the historic lighthouse, Te Raka a Hineatea Pā site, and possibly yellow-eyed penguins and NZ fur seals.
Guests are encouraged to discuss alternative routes to these cities with us that will provide enjoyment of taking in the local scenery.
Getting Around:
By car:
- With advance notice, the hosts can pick up guests from Herbert, which is just five minutes away.
- Herbert is some 300 km along State Highway (SH1) south of Christchurch.
- A leisurely drive from Christchurch would ordinarily take about 4 hours with many locations to view or visit on the way.
- We're located about 80 km north of Dunedin, which is an hour's drive away. At only 20 km away, our nearest city is Oamaru which is famous for its Victorian heritage and caters for all day-to-day needs and requirements including medical facilities and a hospital.
By public transport.
-Guests can travel to Herbert from Christchurch or Dunedin using national New Zealand bus carriers.
-Taxi service operates out of Oamaru but can be quite expensive.

- No livestock within the area
- Cash payments only for any incidentals
- No unregistered guests or visitors are allowed
- Mobile reception is limited to the Spark network
- There are 2 small white fluffy dogs and a cat on-site
- No smoking allowed on the property; only in designated areas
- We would like to advise guests that longer stays or later check-outs will incur an additional charge
- Our property is ideal for families with supervised infants and kids, offering a serene riverfront setting
- Please turn off the lights, air conditioning, and electronics, close windows, and lock doors before leaving the house
Important note:
- Please note that we are located within a logging area, therefore NO OPEN FIRES ARE ALLOWED
- Due to the property's rural location, you may encounter inconveniences such as insects during your stay
- For stays of 5 nights or more (or for bookings of 5 nights or more), an additional cleaning fee will be collected to help maintain the cassette toilet and ensure a clean and fresh experience for all guests. We appreciate your understanding.
