When traveling with kids or a couple friends, it is nice not to be separated by several hotel rooms. This property gives you the opportunity to all be together with the option to have some meals or snacks at home.
If you have ever wanted to fish the Super Bowl of Salmon Fishing at Buoy 10 you couldn't find a better location. you can walk to your charter in less than two-minutes. After a long day of fishing there are a few restaurants within five-minutes walking distance. The property is located next to the Hammond Marina where you can charter river and ocean fishing trips for salmon, sturgeon, crab, tuna, halibut and more, most times during the year. If you would like guide recommendations, please let me know. You can also get your catch processed at Sturgeon Paul’s for a very reasonable fee.
If you are going to see the local sights the apartment is a nice, comfortable place to unwind and cook dinner. Because of the property's centralized location, it is equal distance to see the sights on the southern Washington coast as well as the north Oregon coastline. As an aside, most beach town shops and restaurants close up early and are usually closed on Tuesdays or Wednesdays during the week, so it is always a good idea to check if a business is open before planning a visit.
**PLEASE NOTE — IF YOU ARE TRAVELING WITH PETS**
There is a $100 fully refundable pet fee. When you check out, if you have cleaned up your pet’s fur from the furniture, linens and floor (to a reasonable degree), your entire fee will be refunded to you.
I do not expect there to be no pet fur anywhere but what I do expect is: that you reasonably clean up the hair that gets stuck in linens, furniture and around the house. We love pets and want to continue allowing them to stay here, but they are a lot of extra work to clean up after.
**No pets maybe be left in the property unattended, unless they are very well trained, and they aren’t barking. If you would like a local doggie daycare option or an in-home pet sitter, please let me know. **
You will need to keep your dog on a leash, because of the elk, and pick up after them in the yard. If you want to let them run off leash there is a large field next door, at the marina, you are welcome to play in.
There are a couple other really unique benefits of this property location.
1. The Columbia River and the Pacific Ocean meet nearby, and you can watch the ships coming in from and going into the ocean from steps away. This presents a really interesting experience especially in the rainy and stormy season. The fog will roll in so thick that you can't see across the street. You will hear the fog horns of the ships coming in from or going out to the ocean and you can't see them. It is wild.
2. Another thing that we love about the location is the local elk herds. It is not unusual to have elk in the yard or at the marina next door. You can follow @theHammondHerd on IG to see them. You are welcome to take pictures of them but be very respectful of their space. They are wild animals and when they feel threatened have injured people, property and killed pets.
**Keep in mind~ it is illegal to approach the elk**
If they are in the yard and you need to leave the house. Open the door and make a loud noise, they usually will run away.
In June, the babies are usually coming out with their moms for the first time. At first, they will not be with the rest of the herd for the next month or so. Mama elk are very protective of their precious little ones so be very careful when you are looking at them. You will notice that it isn’t unusual for a mother to give birth to twins or triplets. If the baby has white spots on his hind quarters, it is only a couple weeks old, and those spots will go away.
Each fall, starting as early as August 15 elk enter their breeding season, or rut. The rut continues for about a month in length, sometimes extending through mid-October.
You might see the bulls' locking antlers or hear the bulls bugling early in the morning or in the evening. Normally bulls are very passive. During rut the bulls become aggressive, and you need to exercise caution, by not getting to close or behaving in a challenging way.
