The Space:
This primitive build has a natural way of connecting its guests to the simple pleasures of simpler times. Enjoy first-hand the awe-inspiring vistas, sunrises and long lingering sunsets, relaxation, and unpretentious hospitality of this cabin retreat.

This cabin was crafted by local polar explorer Lonnie Dupre and us, the owners.

At just over 300 sq ft this the cabin is both quaint and spacious boasting an open floor plan and cathedral ceiling.

Built for travelers seeking a retreat in a sustainable stay, we designed this cabin to offer all the necessities one would need in thoughtfulness of nature: solar power for lighting and charging electronics, gas fireplace and stove, A-frame outhouse, rain barrels for wash water and an outdoor bucket shower.

The inspiration for Great Northern Campo came from our time spent living in Argentina, which is where our story together began. Our hope is that travelers can enjoy the same serenity from nature in this rustic refuge that our journey’s brought us.

The interior has been thoughtfully curated with unique decor from Patagonia, Argentina and local Grand Marais artists.

FAQ:

Is this cabin for everyone? — Not exactly… We want to be clear that this is an off-grid cabin that was meant to be used as a rustic retreat. We know that not everyone digs an outdoor bucket shower or an outhouse.

Is the bed upstairs? — Yes. The bed is located in the high loft which can only be accessed by a steep ladder. Guests use at their own risk.

Is there Wifi or cell network service? — There is some cell signal. Verizon tends to have much better reception than At&t or T-Mobile.
There is no wifi… some say for an even better connection :)

What is a “dry” cabin? — This means you will be completely off-grid: solar-powered lighting & charging, plumbing free, outhouse, etc.

What about water? — We provide drinking water in larger jugs May-October. Guests will need to bring any drinking or wash water November - April. We have rain barrels in summer months for collecting wash water. In winter snow can be melted for wash water.

What is your bathroom situation? — We have an A-frame outhouse just next to the cabin. There is also an outdoor bucket shower May-Oct (see in photo gallery). Guests who would prefer a little more water pressure can consider visiting the Grand Marais Rec park for a $4 shower, or buy a $10 day-pass to the Grand Marais YMCA to take advantage of the gym, workout facility, showers, hot tub, sauna, and pool.

Do you have a coffee maker? — We have a pour over and filters for your use.

Do you have a grill or fire pit? — Yes, May through Oct. We have a propane BBQ. We supply the propane and utensils. There is a fire pit. Wood bundles can be bought in town. Guests are free to use fire pit year round but are responsible for snow removal to use it if they wish to do so.

How remote is the cabin? — The cabin is easily accessed (approx. 300 ft) just off Hwy 61 on a maintained driveway. Your views are woods, nature & Lake Superior. While this cabin is completely private, there are neighbors several hundred feet through the woods. However, just as most cabins close to Lake Superior, you could have some road noise.

Winter Conditions:
We recommend AWD/4WD vehicle from Nov 1 to April 30. 2 wheel drive vehicles are free to use the parking at the bottom of the driveway (300ft from cabin). Due to plowing shortages we cannot guarantee that the road will be plowed on a daily basis.

We have 2 parking spots available at the bottom of the driveway in the case that guests are uncomfortable with driving the steep hill or that the conditions are unfavorable to do so. It is approximately a 300ft walk up to the cabin from the bottom of the driveway.

Pets
:
* Only one well-behaved and trained dog per cabin reservation is permitted, subject to an additional nightly fee. The dog must be over 12 months old and fully trained—no exceptions.

If your dog is likely to bark excessively or cause damage, we request that you leave them at home to help us continue offering dog-friendly accommodations. The credit card used for the reservation will be charged for any damages. If your dog exhibits excessive barking, disruptive behavior, we may ask you to leave without a refund and will not be allowed for future reservations.

* Ensure your dog is included in the reservation and that the pet fee is paid before arrival. Bringing a dog that is not listed on your reservation will result in a $250 fine in addition to the nightly pet rate.
* Dogs cannot be left alone in the cabin or on the property under any circumstances. We have wildlife in the area that is dangerous to dogs and can be fatal if left alone. If you’re unsure about your dog's behavior, please arrange for a pet sitter. Pet fees are non-refundable.
* Dogs are not allowed in lofted areas, beds, or furniture. Please remember to pack your dog’s cozy bed for their stay!
* Owners must clean up after their dogs and dispose of waste properly. Failure to do so will incur an additional fee.
* Clean your pet’s paws before entering the cabin.
* Dogs must be leashed at all times on the property—no exceptions. Keep your dogs under strict control at all times around the site and nearby in woods which has lots of wildlife.
* Any damage must be reported within 1 hour of arrival; otherwise, you will be held responsible. Items chewed on or destroyed will be replaced entirely at the guest’s expense.
* We’re pet friendly but also cleaner friendly! If cleaners have to clean pet waste, rid of strong odors or stains are left behind requiring an excessive amount of time, we will compensate them for their time at your expense.

Regarding Service Dogs and Emotional Support Animals: Emotional Support Animals differ from trained and registered service animals. Emotional Support Animals must comply with our pet rules and the pet fee must be paid. Service dogs are welcome without an additional fee. You will be asked two questions permitted by the ADA:

1. Is the dog a service animal required because of a disability?
2. What work or task has the dog been trained to perform?
Service animals must be harnessed, leashed, or tethered unless these devices interfere with the animal’s work or the disability prevents their use. In such cases, the animal must be under control through voice, signal, or other effective means and never left alone.

If a pet is misrepresented as a service animal, we may seek financial restitution, report fraudulent claims, and evict the guest without further notice, with no refund for the remaining stay.

Note that, as of 2022, both vacation rentals and airlines no longer recognize Emotional Support Animals as service animals. If you have an ESA, please book a pet-friendly property and pay the applicable fees.

My husband and I found this place for a mini moon after our wedding. The perfect place to regroup and recharge. Perfect distance from grand marais and other attractions. Highly recommend and will be back in the future. Great communication with the host and got back to us right away with anything we needed. Great time all around.

1st Wedding Anniversary
This area has always been a special place in our relationship. Spending out first trip/date in Grand Marais we knew we wanted to get back up there for our anniversary. This little rustic cabin was WAY better than we could have expected it to be. 100% recommend it, and when we make it back up to that area this will be on the short list of places we'll be considering.

We had an amazing time!
It was a simple and relaxing getaway. The cabin was tucked in from the main Highway which made it so peaceful yet easy to go into town and explore. The hosts do a wonderful job of providing everything needed, and were easy and sweet to communicate with. Take the no running water serious! It’ll take some adjustment but adds to the experience. Overall wonderful stay that we’ve already planned to come back to.

Everything was exactly as described in the material. Juani and Stevie went beyond the expected, however, with cookies, drinks, natural lotions toiletries, etc. Juani promptly came to our assistance when I dropped my coffee on the rug. The place is less that 3 years old and well kept up with solar-powered lights. Everyone is forewarned that the place is "off the grid," so be prepared to use an outhouse and to shower in another structure. Heating water for a hot shower is a pain, but part of the experience. I loved the bed in the loft, but my wife is afraid of heights (she came for 4 nights to prove her love). The grill and fire pit were great. Washing dishes is a pain, so we used paper plates and went out to eat often. The walk to the beach is wonderful, but the hike to Superior Hiking Trail was not clearly marked and overgrown with weeds and fallen trees. Didn't use the hammock, but stayed up late to watch for falling stars. The view of the lake is great with some highway noise. Many place along the North Shore to hike, eat, and tour. Overall, a great experience.

Nature Retreat
Cute little space for relaxation, privacy, and great views of Lake superior. I liked the concept of the environmentally friendly property. Since I was headed into the boundary waters next, this was the perfect gateway to the extended outdoor getaway.

Rustic Magic!!!
Loved this little slice of heaven on the north shore. We had a wonderful day of hiking and enjoying Grand Marais, and then we were treated to the best thunderstorm all cozied up with the fireplace in the evening. The bucket shower was so slick and felt great to get cleaned up and chill in my spa robe in the sunshine on the deck after a long day in the woods. We can’t wait to go back!

Most incredible trip!
My partner and I had the best time at the Patagonia cabin! It was so cute and cozy inside and had everything we needed! The views of the woods and Lake Superior were incredible. The hosts were so kind and helpful and communicative and had so many cute little touches to the cabin that made it feel like home. I truly wish I could live in Patagonia Cabin and never have to leave!

Nice little escape!
This was the perfect stay to unplug and enjoy what the north country has to offer. Conveniently located north a few miles from Grand Marais and close to Devil’s Kettle. The cabin was beautifully decorated and had things like wine glasses, skewers (for roasting marshmallows), and other nice to haves! It was perfect for my friend and I to get away for a few days! Property owners were excellent with communication! Would highly recommend staying here. Bonus: views were amazing!
