Flying Stag: Main Lodge

With an eco-friendly design, sustainable craftsmanship, mountain views, and a prime location just steps away from the slopes at SkiBowl, this Government Camp home offers a unique take on lodge living, along with all the perks you'd expect from a Mount Hood vacation rental. With two living areas, a dining hall, and four bedrooms plus a loft housing 12 guests, this is an ideal retreat for large groups looking for an unparalleled mountain experience.

Once the first restaurant in Government Camp, this historic lodge has since be refurbished using locally sourced and upcycled wood to create a modernized, green environment while maintaining a traditional mountain lodge feel. Floor-to-ceiling wood panels and rustic decor reinforce the cabin-like ambiance of the home, along with the roaring gas fireplace that will keep you feeling cozy on those cold snowy nights.

The open layout and multiple common areas both encourage togetherness and camaraderie among your group and allow everyone to spread out and do their own thing. And you'll have plenty indoors to keep you entertained. While some may need to catch up on work emails (there's WiFi throughout), the others can play a game on the Wii, or watch a movie on Netflix or the DVD player. And don't forget CDs, there's a stereo and CD player too!

One of the most popular places to gather on vacation is naturally the kitchen. Spacious and fully stocked, this kitchen was made to handle large meals. There's plenty of prep room along the granite countertops, a brand new stove, all the kitchen essentials you could need, and even barstools at the eat-in bar so others can keep the chefs company while they prepare their masterpiece. Don't be too daunted by the post-meal mess - there's a dishwasher to make clean-up easier. Serve up your meals family style in the dining hall at the elongated wooden table that serves up to 10.

Four bedrooms in addition to the loft will sleep 12 vacationers comfortably. The stunning craftsmanship continues in the bedrooms with locally made beds from Cotton Cloud lined with organic linen sheets for a rejuvenating night's rest (note that the mattresses on these custom, hand-made beds are a little firmer than most, and without a box spring). Upstairs you'll find a bedroom with a queen bed and a second bedroom with two sets of twin bunks, along with a cozy TV room with two futons that can be used as additional sleeping arrangements. Back on the main floor lays another queen bedroom and the fourth bedroom, which holds a twin bunk bed. The lodge provides two full baths.

When it's time to head out, skiers and boarders will already be 'home' with the slopes of SkiBowl just a short walk from the front door. Head further up the road via the Glade Trail on snowshoe or cross-country skis (or the 15 minute drive by car) to Timberline Lodge where a hot chocolate and a dose of Oregon history awaits. There's snow tubing, terrain parks, and sleigh rides in the winter, and in the summer make sure to check out Mt. Hood Adventure Park's zip lines, alpine slide, rock wall, mini golf, mountain bike parks and more. There are miles upon miles of trails for hikers and bikers to explore, and fisherman will find plenty of steelhead in the Sandy and Salmon rivers close by.

Whether you're a ski club, on a work retreat, gathering with extended family, or a group of friends on a ski-venture, this unique Mt. Hood vacation rental offers the perfect amount of space and privacy to accommodate your group. With a unique layout and design and a stellar location, this Mt. Hood vacation rental will be one to remember.

Great Location/Terrible beds
We loved the location! Could walk to everything in town, including a few hikes. The space was good for the number of people we had. But, the beds were absolutely the worst we’ve slept in. No box springs, just a mattress on top of wooden boxes and our backs were sore every morning.kitchen was definitely fully stocked.

Great location, but dirty and run down.
This cabin is great with an amazing location, but needs an update of the beds, dishes (most of the cups are chipped), curtains, and plumbing. And whoever cleans it did a bad job. There were cups and dishes from the previous users hidden throughout and a huge cob web in our bedroom that’s been there for a while. It has lots of potential, but the owners don’t really care much.

Horrible beds. Fabulous location.
We LOVED the location. It’s just a couple blocks from all the grocery/liquor/restaurants. Easy drive to Timberline and White River Sno-Park. We loved that there were ample dishes and cooking supplies as we ate the majority of the meals at the house. We loved that the house stayed well heated. The kitchen tables are beautiful! We HATED the beds. In all my years renting vacation homes, these were the worst. It felt like we were sleeping on hardwood floors. Out of 8 adults, 7 of us had very painful nights. We disliked the parking situation. Weekends are fine, but during the week you have to move your vehicle by 8am on Thursdays and between noon-1pm on Fridays. This was an irritant. The windows in the bedrooms had black mold on them. The ‘laundry room’ had probably 2 decades worth of spiderwebs and was disgusting and unsafe. One of the rails on the railing was broken. The three year old almost fell through to the bottom floor on the very first day. I have stayed at a few other homes in Government Camp and this is the dead last I would stay at again.

Not The Best Experience
I'm not going to make this long and drawn out; I'll briefly touch on several points (good & bad): 1. Broken window/shattered glass upon arrival (44* outside) -- BAD 2. Sleeps about 14, but comfortably sits 4-6. -- BAD 3. Prison mattresses may be more comfortable than some in the cabin. -- BAD 4. Laundry "room" is like a dark, musty, dirt dungeon. At least add some plywood or pavers so guests aren't walking in this disgusting mess. -- BAD 5. Ample room for many to dine together. -- GOOD 6. There's a soundbar, a TV, a Firestick, and a Roku; however, nothing worked and no remotes would pair downstairs. -- BAD 7. Cabinet beneath TV has broken leg and is propped up on something; this could easily fall & injure a child. -- BAD 8. Plenty of kitchen pots/pans/utensils/cups/etc. -- GOOD 9. Plenty of linens. -- GOOD 10. Microwave was missing. #10 is my biggest complaint. We shopped prior to our arrival & had several items that would have been convenient to microwave. I text the property manager; they said they'd look into it. The following day, they were still looking into it. Day 3 of 4, I was finally told that the microwave had previously broken and there was "a ticket in to replace it." Needless to say, day 4 came & went without a microwave. I kindly requested a $150 credit due to all of this and was told, "No problem, we're sorry, we will get this processed for you." Nope. I was issued $60 as a prorated inconvenience.

family gathering for skiing sleding and fun
We had a wonderful time. The location in the heart of government camp made walking to restaurants so easy. It worked for us but if we had more couples the presence of only two queens the rest single and bunk beds would have been a disadvantage. Stairs to the entryway were snow covered so we did daily shoveling to make them less dangerous - but hey - we were there for the snow so no complaints on that!

Historic cabin in a great location
Flying Stag Main Lodge is a historic cabin (former restaurant) that has a lot of charm and very roomy, updated kitchen, 4 bedrooms (2 on main and 2 upstairs), 2 bathrooms (1 on main and 1 upstairs), multiple seating areas and right on the main loop road within seconds walking to the best restaurant in Govy (Glacier Public House). Would definitely stay at this cabin again.

Unique cabin but stove is terrible
Overall, we had a wonderful time for Thanksgiving weekend with our family. A unique layout, charming feel. It could use a little TLC in the form of knocking down cobwebs, instructions on controlling the gas fireplace, easier to use window coverings, and getting a stove that is easier to operate. The stovetop failed us for Thanksgiving dinner, and we wound up using the crock pots to cook the side dishes. We spent all day trying to research and troubleshoot the stove, which has a very complicated control system. Googling the instructions for this discontinued stove model provided no help. The coffee pot has to finish its cycle 110% prior to removing the pot to pour, or the countertop will be flooded. If these appliances were replaced with better models, then I would rate this place 4 stars.

Great cabin for a group!
We loved the location within walking distance of everything in Govt. Camp and easy to get to Timberline, ski resorts, etc. Lots of great sleeping options, nice bedding, plentiful towels, etc. Would highly suggest an inventory of the kitchen. There were a total of 3 small drinking glasses and a handful of very small coffee mugs. For a house that sleeps 12, there should be 12 of everything. We had some family come up the next day and had them bring glasses and coffee mugs. The rest of the kitchen is more than well stocked. Some salt/snow melt for the stone stairs would be an awesome addition as well. We tried to buy some in town, but didn't have any luck finding it. All in all a great stay and our group had a blast in the charming, cozy home!

Not the cleanest, nor most updated, but very cool lodge like setting. Could use some TLC. Oven and stove barely works, so if you want to cook , find out if they fixed that. Tons of space to sleep lots of ski buddies.

Frat House
I don't care what time of year it is. We rented this place for New Years' so prices were inflated and not worth it. This place was filthy. Bring your slippers. Our feet were black from walking on the floors. Pots and pans need to be washed before use. The burner on the stove didn't work. Sofas are torn and stained. The main floor shower has a substantial leak. Beds are futon cushions with pillows and sheets that are stained. Stairs leading to the house are treacherous. Bring a shovel. Extremely disappointed.

Nice house, terrible communication
I really liked the house and how large it was. Clearly it’s older but was what we were looking for. The stove/oven did not work amazingly but still able to cook. I’d give it a better rating except the communication was TERRIBLE. I tried to contact the property 2 weeks before, the day before, and during the stay when the shower leaked everywhere. No response ever.

Filthy and no communication from VACASA (management)
This place is filthy. Literally bags of garbage hanging from the door, bathroom covered in dirt, table with dried jelly on it, downstairs bunk bed for my son had some sort of red wet substance on it, dust and dirt on furniture, drink stains on dressers that come off with wipes, dirt-pills-dust and bottle caps behind dressers and in corners, screws/nails sticking up from missing floor board...etc. Honestly what is the cleaning charge for? In the time of Covid they clearly did not clean appropriately and do not care to respond to my repeated communication attempts, messages and emails. . VACASA sent me an email saying it was super clean because of Covid before I arrived (I believe it was computer generated). CLEARLY this place was not cleaned. As other reviewers stated, this place needs a deep cleaning. We left as soon as I could find a different place. NEVER ONCE HEARD FROM VACASA. No matter what they reply (if they reply) I kept photos and communication. They completely do not care about customer and saying "due to covid we might be delayed in responding" is not an excuse to never respond. I have rented many properties from VRBO. Never had one complaint until this place. Will never rent from a VACASA property again.

A complete disappointment
Greasy pots and pans. Stains on bedroom comforter. Dirty, used towel left in bedroom. Kitchen faucet only workable when you figure out the “trick”. Don’t waste your money on this property. Treat your family to a very nice hotel. That’s what I would if I had known all of this ahead of time.

Needs a deep clean and some work
If you are a group of college students - this is probably ok. If you have expectations other than a beaten up frat house, you should probably look elsewhere. VRBO bounces the management to Vacasa, I acknowledge that CoViD is making life a challenge but ... 3 hours on hold just isn't ok.

Winter Beauty
Beautiful home. The layout is a little odd, but it was cozy. We kept the place warm with the gas fireplace and there were baseboard heaters in every room. Kitchen is large and is a dream to cook in. They have a variety of spices, pots, pans and cooking utensils. VACASA was excellent to work with. We left an expensive sweater there and they had shipped it back to us in a week. Very happy with our stay.
