Hill Cottage | Historic and Charming

Cain City was founded as one of the stops along the Fredericksburg and Great Northern Railway. It was a thriving town and until just about 30 years ago part of the old bank was still standing just a short distance from Hill Cottage.

Located only a few miles from Fredericksburg this delightful quaint, little cottage boasts phenomenal views. The yard has a wonderful array of birds. The outside patio has comfy chairs and charcoal grill and is ideal for watching our feathered friends, rabbits, deer, and all the other nature so abundant to the area.

The Adam's family built Hill Cottage in 1912, and also were founders of Cain City. Pine floors, pristine white trim, fluffy white lace curtains, and rich rose walls enhance the playful mix of patterns in the floral sofa and plaid armchair creating a warm and inviting glow in the living room. Enjoy the Direct TV with DVD player. Two bedrooms (both with queen-size beds) are found on both sides of the bath. Comfy reading chairs are found in both bedrooms along with antique dressers and chests. The bath has a claw foot tub with shower.

A completely equipped country kitchen has a range/oven, refrigerator, microwave, toaster and coffeemaker. The adjacent dining room has a table for four and antique china cabinet. Windows are conveniently arranged to enjoy the countryside views. The large patio and screened-in porch both have comfy chairs to sit and relax. Broadway Cottage is next door and also sleeps four—makes a perfect getaway for eight people.

$27.00*/extra person after the first 3 in the group/night
*plus 13% tax

Cleaness
Enjoyed this old, antique house..but it needs some tender loving attention, a good cleaning. And it would be nice to have a TV in the room

Relaxing
The house was secluded enough to be relaxing and peaceful but close to Fredericksburg’s main attractions. It could have used a bit more tidying before our arrival. There was food from the previous tenant left in the fridge and dead crickets in one of the rooms along with a dead scorpion behind the door. The rest of the house was quaint and what would be expected of an old ‘farmhouse’.

Quiet and cozy
Plus side - this place was very cozy and quiet. Downfalls - the coffee pot was dirty and the coffee and creamer were very much expired. This is the first bnb we have stayed in that didn't provide coffee, water bottles, or something quick for breakfast, such as granola bars or oatmeal packets.

Loved the location. Comfortable beds, furnished well. Kitchen was well equipped. The bathtub and floor are dangerous. Unstable, slippery, and no handrails. One of our party could not safely use it.

Find somewhere else to stay
I don’t know where to begin. Obviously the photos of this house are quite old. The ripped screen at the entry door where we were to get the key was the first clue. Refrigerator door handle was filthy, rugs had not been vacuumed either. Of the 4 exterior doors, only two had deadbolt locks on them, so we never felt safe. The sofa looked like someone just woke up from sleeping on it with the throw piled in a heap on it, so we never sat on any of the furniture except for the wooden chairs in the dining room. The curtain was falling down from the window behind the sofa. The toilet had so much Lyme deposit, it didn’t look sanitary, and the seat was broken. The shower curtains had a significant build up of soap scum on them so we never used the shower. All drains were caked with Lyme deposits, in clouding kitchen sink. Then we checked our bed sheets, and discovered human and animal hair in between the sheets, both pubic hairs and long hairs. We slept on top of them. We thought we might sit on the nice rocking chairs on the front porch, but they had not been cleaned all winter, so we couldn’t sit there either. Needless to say, we could not get out of there fast enough. I do not know where all the positive reviews came from, but they clearly didn’t stay there this year. I asked the manager for a refund as soon as I saw the condition of the house, and they agreed to refund only the $25 cleaning fee. Avoid this place like the plague! And watch your little ones…decon mouse traps.

Music in Luckenbach
Great location and quaint quiet place. We were gone majority of the time out in Fredericksburg Friday night then in Luckenbach all day. Location is great in the sense that we were easily able to get an Uber there and back. It was an all day festival so we didn’t want to risk having fun then having to drive on unfamiliar roads. All and all cute and comfy place.

Cleanliness and Responsiveness Needs Improvement
The kitchen, bathroom and outdoor areas looked good. It was peaceful, semi-private and comfy rustic. We were on a girl's weekend, the first night we noticed that both bed fitted sheets appeared to be soiled. New sheets were requested the next day via email and call to property manager but no answer, email back or call back. Living room sofa area and floor could use a thorough cleaning.

Cute house in quiet neighborhood
It was a beautiful house. Reminded us so much of our grandma's house growing up. Beds were super comfortable and all linen was clean and fresh. Had direct TV so we were able to enjoy some resting time. Loved the back yard. Saw deer everywhere and the house is about 8 minutes away from the downtown area. The only downside was the power and lights did not work in one of the rooms. But we managed just fine using the light from the bathroom and just charged our electronics in another room. Had central air and heat and made the house feel so cozy. Definitely would stay again.

Our overall stay was wonderful. The cottage took us back to our grandparent's farm days. My only two suggestions are: 1) the sofa needs an upgrade-not comfortable, 2) the toilet seat needs repair. These things did not distract us from enjoying the cottage. Thank you so much. Pat Verbal

Cute, but needs work
We booked this place last minute for a girls weekend in Fredericksburg. It served its purpose (sleeping) and was very charming, but not much more. Besides being in need of a cleaning and some handiwork, both the front door and the back door wouldn’t lock. The direct tv didn’t work, and there were vhs but no player. The most surprising thing that was not disclosed was that there was absolutely no WiFi available, which was troublesome as one of us had to hop online to complete work. Just a few easy upgrades would have done wonders!

Outdated & Not Functional
This property wasn't what I was expecting for my mom & I to enjoy this weekend getaway. The property is isolated and somewhat creepy. Location and decorations seem like it's prime for a ghost story. The furnishings inside may be original to home - beyond worn and very dusty. The bathroom toilet, sink and tub are stained and need to be replaced/refinished. The DirecTV didn't work during our stay and we could only watch DVD's. (Glad we found a nearby RedBox for 2nd night in home). The back patio furniture doesn't match photos and are falling apart or propped up with rocks. You will need to bring your own chairs if you plan to enjoy the firepit. The front door has no real lock and only stays shut/secure with a latch hook. I didn't feel secure or clean in this property...wished I'd paid for a hotel.

They had everything you needed. Very quaint place. Saw deer every morning and evening. Perfect location, we were able to have peace and quiet but still be only 15 minutes from town. We really enjoyed our visit. No wifi but our cell phones worked well and were able to connect to the phone via hotspot.

A very convenient historic cottage
We did feel the sense of returning to the early 20th century, when we stayed in the house. Because the interior design, decoration, Furnitures and books, they just look like antiques in the house. It is a wonderful experience. It is very convenient, just a few minutes away to the highway TX 290
