Our Town:
The Town of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea incorporated in 1947 and is nestled between the blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway in Broward County on Florida’s southeast coast. The entire town is approximately 1.5 square miles in size- on a barrier island about 7 feet above sea level.
Brightly- colored banners anchor our boundaries and colorful way-finding signs celebrate the Town’s identity as a charming, seaside village.
Unlike many Florida communities on the ocean, where tall condominiums crowd the beach, most of our buildings are under four stories tall and are most obvious when viewed looking back from the end of Anglin’s Pier.
Can you imagine snorkeling from the beach to reefs alive with tropical fish, turtles and even lobsters? We are widely acknowledged to be the South Florida Shore Diving Capital. With a unique snorkel trail and a coral reef teeming with colorful fish, spiny lobsters and other marine life — all within 100 yards of the beach! Because our reefs are popular with beach divers, the Broward County Commission in 1997 declared our Town the Shore Diving Capital of Florida. The Florida Division of Historical Resources in June 1994 also designated the underwater remains of the SSCopenhagen, a 19th century steamer that sank offshore in 1900, as an official underwater archaeological preserve — one of only 10 such preserves in Florida.
Active vacationers can kayak, paddle board, skim board, enjoy yoga sessions, snorkel and fish our waters. For more leisurely activities, you can picnic in our seaside parks, take cooking classes from a renowned chef, collect shells, soak up the sun on the beach, or relax and people-watch in the plazas.
The Town's average annual temperature is 76 degrees Fahrenheit.
We welcome you to enjoy a multitude of sidewalk cafes, frequent live music, and an enticing public plaza where free dance classes are held monthly and outdoor games are played daily.
Most weekends offer live music in the Anglin's Square area, so don’t forget your dancing shoes and bring an appetite! You really don’t need a car to enjoy Lauderdale-By-The-Sea’s delights. It’s walk-able and everything is conveniently located.
The charm of LBTS stretches from the ocean to the Intracoastal Waterway. As you stroll down Commercial Boulevard, you’ll find unique items ranging from jewelry, clothing, gifts, furniture and home décor to delicious fresh-baked goods and lovely flowers available in locally-owned and operated shops.
Visit one of the nearby ice cream shops or award-winning chocolatiers, if you are hungry, just throw on flip flops and a shirt over your bathing suit, and choose from over fifteen restaurants within a short walk.
We are bordered on the south by the City of Fort Lauderdale and on the north by the City of Pompano Beach. Lauderdale-By-The-Sea is 30 miles north of Miami and 33 miles south of Palm Beach.
The Town has 6,056 permanent residents.
The closest major airport is Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. South Florida's other major airports include Palm Beach International in West Palm Beach and Miami International.
The Town is situated several miles north of Port Everglades, which is the second busiest cruise port in the nation (Miami being the first). The Intracoastal Waterway on the Town's western border provides ocean access to recreational boaters via Port Everglades and the Hillsboro Inlet in Pompano Beach, the city's northern neighbor.
We also offer bike rentals in Town and a free community ride service named Circuit that runs the length of the entire Town. Free to ride- use app to contact driver. County buses and the Sun Trolley enable you to travel to Fort Lauderdale’s beach, malls and Las Olas Boulevard, where one might take in museums or the performing arts center.
For more information about our town you can visit Lauderdale by the Sea’s website.
