If you're looking for a one-of-a-kind property this is it! How about a walk down memory lane from the 1960-1970s? Our home is a mid-century Fay Jones and Frank Lloyd Wright inspired marvel. We’ve decorated it with some unique and fun finds that are sure to bring back memories of the 60’s and 70’s!
If you’re looking for a peaceful private retreat surrounded by nature, it will fulfill that need as well! We have over 3,000 sq feet of deck on multiple levels to enjoy the scenery, including a creek and pond. You won’t believe you’re only 12 minutes from the University of Arkansas and under 5 minutes to the Walmart neighborhood market, Harp’s grocery store, Penguin Ed’s barbecue, La Huerta Mexican, China Cafe, Dominoes, Eureka Pizza, Sonic, Taco Bell, Dairy Queen, Tim’s Pizza and more! Fayetteville has literally grown up all around our property. It’s rare to find seclusion right in the middle of everything.
Our home was designed and built by local architect, Archie Backlin, in 1969 as his own personal residence. Mr. Backlin was a huge fan of Frank Lloyd Wright and styled his home in that mid-century fashion. You’ll see many of the same features in our home as you would in a Fay Jones designed home (Fay Jones was an apprentice of Frank Lloyd Wright). Our home has an abundance of glass and cedar, in fact, there is not one piece of drywall in the entire house!
When we purchased the home we were fortunate to meet Archie’s son, who provided us a copy of the original blueprints. One of the blueprints is framed near the office loft where Archie drafted many architectural plans. In fact, if you look closely you’ll see an image of the architect himself smoking a pipe in his loft office.
Guests of our home will enjoy viewing unique mid-century pieces including a Victrola radio console in the living area (turntable no longer works), a tulip lamp in the 2nd bedroom, an oil rain lamp in the dining room, acrylic grapes, brass leaf tree, large driftwood table, rotary phone (my daughter didn’t know how one would make a call using it) and many other unique finds. We’ve decorated the house with some of my favorite pieces from that time period. It’s like a walk down memory lane (a time capsule of sorts). Please be mindful that many of the decorative items are old and fragile. They are not toys and have sentimental value so please admire with care.
Our home is positioned in a small valley between two hillsides guaranteeing privacy. It is truly a unique design with many levels. (Unfortunately, the home is not handicap accessible, not appropriate for children under 7, or for people with limited mobility due to numerous stairs). Every room in the house is located on a different level with the exception of the entryway, living and kitchen which are all on the main level. There is a two-story wall of windows in the living area overlooking the wooded acreage and a pond off in the distance. There is a seasonal creek that runs alongside the property that provides a beautiful and peaceful sound most of the year. There are private decks off of the dining room, master bedroom, guest bedroom, and living area. You might see deer frolicking around the pond, but you're guaranteed not to see any neighbors!
The living area is large and open to the kitchen with a two story stone fireplace. The stones were sourced from the land when the home was built in the 1960s. The kitchen is open to the living area with a bar that seats 2. There is a kitchen table that seats 4 located between the kitchen and the open living area. There is also a separate formal dining room that comfortably seats 10.
The large master bedroom is located downstairs and has a king size bed and ensuite bathroom with double sinks, shower and a one of a kind garden tub for two. There is a small covered deck off of the master with chairs and a table to enjoy your morning coffee while listening to the sounds of the babbling creek below.
The second bedroom is upstairs and opens to the living area below. It has a daybed with a trundle bed underneath as well as a futon couch that can be made into a 3rd bed. There is a private bath with double sinks, toilet and shower. The upstairs bedroom has it's own private balcony overlooking the creek and pond complete with two chaise lounge chairs. You'll feel like a bird in the tree tops with an expansive view of the property.
There is a loft/office that has a desk and chair. It’s a great place to enjoy a book and a cup of coffee while enjoying a 360 degree view of the property. We’ve decorated it with some vintage Razorback decor and are always on the hunt for something unique for our favorite team!
The basement houses the washer and dryer and a large media/game room. In addition to a flat screen tv, there is a couch, chair and ottoman, another futon and a table for 4. There is also a small foosball table that converts into a tiny pool table that's perfect for a little gaming. There is an assortment of board games and movies located in the home.
As if the main house isn’t enough, just inside the gated entry to the property, you'll find a private heated and cooled game room. There is a full size pool table, shuffleboard table, loveseat, flat screen tv, refrigerator, bar and bar stools as well as multiple small tables for additional seating. A variety of movies are available for your enjoyment in the game room and in the media room (located in the main house) .
Note: There is a security camera (ring doorbell) located on the front door. There are no other cameras on the property.
