The Neighborhood:
The Retreats has everything for a memorable vacation in the North Woods. Only minutes from dining and shopping in downtown Ely. Hike to Kawishiwi Falls. One of the most unique beers in Ely is the Blueberry Blonde available at the Boathouse Brepub. Hands down the number one recommendation I received for Ely was a meal at Insula. The Chocolate Moose is a great breakfast stop with a nice outdoor patio space.

Getting Around:
Property is in private pristine Boundary Waters Forest with great views. The International Wolf Center in Ely is a great place to learn about the history of wolves and how they’ve continued to evolve as humans have coexisted in their living areas.

Family gathering to honor Grandpa
The location of this property is gorgeous and the home is reasonably comfortable. If you want a multi-generational group to gather here the owners need to address window coverings, especially in the one bathroom that has a shower that does not leak through the floor into the kitchen. Having grandchildren playing on the deck, with sliding glass door viewing into the shower, is not ideal. We read the reviews and brought our own curtain to cover the window. We left them behind so maybe the owner will get the message. At the stated price and with sleeping for 8, bathroom privacy matters. They also need to fix the leaking shower upstairs. The email asking me to tip their housekeepers on the morning of departure was insulting when I paid significant "service fees." Perhaps the owner should pay their cleaning staff an equitable portion of the "fees."

July 27-30, 2013 Stay
My family and I hoped for a 4-5 star experience but as the stay went on the stars waned. Has potential, but basic hospitality overlooked. At this price point discerning guests can and should warn others: *Broken locks on multiple doors & windows made it time consuming to close or open, also not secure. This is a basic tenant - mentioned to Vrbo as well.*Great breezes in Ely but many windows & doors missing a screen or screen is broken or have holes, are improperly installed or screen doors don’t lock. Causes lack of airflow which makes lower family room and upstairs bedroom airless and stuffy on warm days.*Gas grill had two (2!!!) empty propane tanks. Flat top grill was "disgusting" with grease/food remnants. Bears, anyone? *Saw this on other reviews but some basic curtains would make the stay 1-star better. There are no curtains or blinds in two bedrooms + the main bathroom. Anyone on the deck can watch you shower! And good luck sleeping in on your vacation. Luckily we prepared and brought our own, but that lost a star. *Light switches…don’t work, don’t make sense, or turn on lights in a different area. Frustratingly unmarked too. *Dock & boardwalk is dangerously unkempt in areas and should not be trusted. Steps are broken and dangerous front and back in areas. Warning to anyone with small children or pets; the pool is not securely fenced.*Dirty glassware, plates, utensils. The setting is serene but the stay was uncomfortable. The good news is the issues are all fixable.

Nice Vacation Cabin
We had a very nice time at this peaceful cabin! The pool was really nice. They left us firewood and the firepit was nice too. All the rooms and bathrooms are modern and nice and clean. Everything is as described. The owners are very friendly and communication was good. The only thing I would add is that there were a few things around the home we didnt know how to operate and instructions could have been clearer. It would be nice if there was a canoe or kayaks to use on property as many homes in the area at this price offer these small boats to use, when right on a lake. We are leaving a list for the owners of some touches and details that need fixing or would be nice to have on site. For the most part it was a great place to stay!

Girls Trip
Went with five of my closest friends to celebrate my best friends 40th birthday. The house was lovely, clean, and as pictured. No real downsides for our group but future groups should be aware that there are a lot of stairs, coming in (you may struggle with heavier luggage) and two of the bedrooms are at the top of a tight spiral staircase. Speaking of bedrooms, there are not curtains in them so bring an eyemask if you like sleeping in. The site stated that there were two king beds, two doubles, and two twin beds...there are not two twin beds, there are these little tiny chairs that fold out into lounges or the living room couch, which was fine with our group. Check in and out was easy. Pool is wonderful, you will have insect company, I'm not scared of bugs so no big deal. A lot of privacy from neighbors and close proximity to town. Easy to find the property with Google maps. The boardwalk leading to the lake is weather worn and may be a little iffy for the non sure footed. Overall it was a fantastic place and we had a great time. Thank you 😊

Lovely Vacation Home!
We absolutely loved staying at this property. It was very clean, the beds were comfortable, all needs were provided for (including towels, garbage bags, toilet paper, etc.) and the whole home felt luxurious. The master bedroom suite has a very comfortable bed, and the soaking tub with a view of the lake is an amazing way to relax in the evening. The children enjoyed having Roku tv available, as well as internet. The internet was a bit slow at times, but that comes with the territory. Not every town has fast internet yet. The location is very quiet - you would never know you have neighbors nearby unless they're outside talking. You can't really see their properties through the trees. So you feel very remote, but you're actually close to town and all the restaurants. All in all, we loved staying here and will book it again next year. Thank you for maintaining such a lovely spot for vacationers like us!

Good, But Had Some Issues
This property was fantastic, except for a few issues: the bugs were relentless, the household appliances had issues, and the light switches were all over the place. When we arrived at the property, there were over 8 flies in the property. We were provided a fly swatter and bug spray, but otherwise we had no other tools to deal with the bugs. In the master bathroom and kitchen, there were numerous fruit flies as well (some came leaping out of the refrigerator). Outside in the pool, we had the hugest flies we have ever seen dive-bombing the pool and drowning themselves - at its peak (morning) we counted two flies per minute. Of course, we are out in the woods and some level of bugs are expected, but so too was a bug zapper or some method of bug control. The household appliances had a handful of obstacles for us to overcome: the freezer door did not close properly, the air-fryer tray was covered in oil and grease, the outdoor grill was not cleaned, the lockbox on property we were referred to had a spider living in it, the ceiling fan in the living room was rickety. The fireplace in the living room could not turn on (as far as we could tell), there was only a single AC unit (versus a control HVAC system) so the house remained uncomfortably warm, and halfway through our stay, the ceiling above the kitchen sink began dripping water all over the floor when the upstairs bathroom was in use. Finally, not a single light switch in the property was labeled. We spent thirty minutes flipping switches on and off to get the master bedroom light working, only to find out at the end that you must press a button that also rotates outside of the master bedroom to turn it on. Truly, labels for all the switches will save everyone time in the long run. An additional note: The pool was not covered and had debris and confetti scattered throughout. We could not locate the pool cover per the hosts' instructions to cover it overnight. We did like the property, to be clear. We had a great time despite all of the above issues, but our peeve with them is that the solutions seem pretty straight forward and easy (apart from clear appliance issues that require real work to fix): clean out the small stuff (the pool, the flies, etc.), and label your switches (backyard light, bedroom light, etc.). Bonus recommendation: Add curtains to the master bathroom's deck doors. They open completely to the backyard and anyone on the deck can look in and see you showering/bathing.

Thanks again
Overall it was excellent. The property was as listed and we were very satisfied with the overall experience. Things to add: 1. Grill - the grill was essentially disassembled and under the deck. Thankfully the flat top was great and most grilling can be done on it. 2. There were no curtains which was a little puzzling but we got around it. Blackout curtains, for sleeping in, would be a big plus. 3. Dressers would be an additional plus. 4. We thought that a guidebook of the area for out of towners would be a big plus. It helps patrons find great things in the area. 5. There were tons of light switches that didn’t do anything…..that we know of. The nightlights and make up towels were great. We would love to stay here again and will recommend this property. Thank you for a wonderful week. H
