Welcome to "The Butterfly Ranch."
City of Dunsmuir Permit # 2022-0012
We're happy you're considering our home. Please note - we do not consider ourselves to be in the "hotel," or, "motel" category. Instead we welcome you into our private home and the community of Dunsmuir as personal guests of our family. We ask that you please respect our home as you enjoy your stay. In exchange, we will do everything we can to make sure you are as comfortable as we would make any of our family and friends.
This fabulous property sits right on the Sacramento River. Whether you want to dine outside on the outdoor table overlooking the river, or just relax and watch it run, the options are endless. The house is 2 bedroom 1 bath, and there is a futon in the living room which converts to a queen bed. Whether you are looking for your own stretch of Blue Ribbon trout river waters, or a romantic getaway for 2, or a place for your family get-together or group skiing adventure, this is truly a magical place to renew your spirit!
The space
This unique property is literally on the river. Fish from your pavilion, or soak your feet - but best of all just enjoy! There is a smart TV and internet - NetFlix and YouTube TV are provided. There is a large selection of DVD's for your use. Please keep in mind we do live in the mountains, cell service and internet can be patchy and slow at times. You may have to stand in a corner with one arm in the air and head tilted to the right to get that bar on your phone - or better yet leave it at the door and get away from it all! (If you use Verizon, we provide a signal extender and Wi-Fi calling which helps a lot in the house.)
Please be aware that we have landscapers on the property every Wednesday for 2 hours. We do this so the property is kept as beautiful as possible for all guests. They are very discreet and only work outdoors.
Please note: the rates are based on up to 4 guests. A maximum of 6 guests are allowed. Each guest beyond the 4th will be charged $15 per night. (Please understand this is a cozy space and with one bathroom, these limits help make it comfortable for everyone.)
The owners live in the area, but are not adjacent to the property.
Also note: we do not provide propane gas for the outdoor bbq. There is a 5-gallon propane tank in the gas firepit - you can take it to Dollar General and swap it for a full one for $20. (A full tank will provide from 6-10 hours of fire, depending on how high you set the flame.)
If this home is booked, be sure to check out our other riverfront home, only a few hundred feet down the river- search Airbnb for "River Oak Retreat."
Guest access
The entire home except one small storage area in the house, and a few storage rooms in the detached building , which are reserved for the owners and locked.
Other things to note
This cottage sits on one of the most beautiful and productive fisheries in the world. The Upper Sacramento is world-renowned for its population of trophy rainbow trout. Fish right on the property, or explore the area - several guide services are nearby to help maximize your angling experience.
NOTE: The river is not deep, but is very cold and can run swift - footing can be slippery. We advise you do not enter the river without proper fishing and safety gear.
In addition to being on the river's edge, the railroad also runs nearby and this can be loud at times, even at night. The town is steeped in railroad history, and this only adds to the charm. A 5 minute walk will take you to the Amtrak Station where you can find a small railroad museum. You are also a 5 -10 minute walk to several wonderful eateries, and coffee shops.
