Dollar is a charming village on the side of the Ochil hills that offers a tranquil escape with its rich history and scenic beauty. The village is renowned for Dollar Academy, a prestigious private school, and is an excellent base for exploring the surrounding Clackmannanshire area and the historic city of Stirling, located just 13 miles away. Visitors can wander through Dollar Glen, a dramatic chasm overseen by the imposing Castle Campbell, also known as ’Castle Gloom’. Despite its foreboding nickname, the castle offers breathtaking views of the hills and the village below. Stirling, on the other hand, is a city steeped in history, where every corner tells a story of Scotland’s past. The city is home to the magnificent Stirling Castle, perched on a crag with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The Old Town of Stirling is a treasure trove of historic buildings and cobbled streets, leading up to the castle and the Wallace Monument, a tribute to the legendary freedom fighter Sir William Wallace.
For those interested in the pivotal moments of Scottish history, the nearby battlefield of Bannockburn marks Robert the Bruce’s victory over the English in 1314. Both Dollar and Stirling offer cosy pubs and elegant restaurants serving traditional Scottish fare and modern culinary creations.
