SCENIC CABIN 35Ac Peace&Quiet Creek Pets Hiking 35min-MesaVerde, 5min-SandCanyon

The cabin is located in the heart of the Four Corners area. If you like exploring red rock canyons, have an interest in the ancient peoples of the Southwest or just want to get away to a stunningly beautiful area to enjoy the peace and quiet while relaxing in the space of 35 acres just off a paved road in canyon country, this cabin will fill your needs. Make this your private getaway to a land filled with history and ancient mystery. This cabin feels remote but is only a 1/4 mile down a well maintained gravel road from a paved road and provides a base for taking advantage of all that the four corners has to offer. Lots of parking. It lies exactly midway between Mesa Verde and Hovenweep and 5 min from great hiking at the Sand Canyon entrance to Canyons for the Ancients.

Situated along the year-round creek in the midst of the red rock cliff section of historic McElmo canyon, the cabin sits a shady elm grove, next to red rock cliffs and a Macintosh & Jonathan apple orchard. Long since abandoned by the 'Anazasi' who lived in the surrounding countryside from its mesa tops to its canyon bottoms; this canyon was once home to the ancestors of the Pueblo peoples of New Mexico. Their legacy remains visible today as is illustrated by the cliff dwellings across the creek seen from the cabin front porch and the pottery sherds surfacing as the rains and winds uncover buried layers of of an earlier civilization in the surrounding fields.

Once home to Mormon settlers and farmers scattered along the stage coach road by the creek, the canyon is still home to cowboys and ranchers alongside the farmers, archaeologists, artists, stone carvers, horses, cows, sheep, donkeys, foxes, deer, grape growers, wine makers and the very rare occasional mountain lion and black bear.

Keywords: Cabin, large shaded porch, red rock canyon views, creek, hiking.

Great cabin!
Overall wonderful cabin and property. It was nice and secluded and had plenty of space for our dogs. It had everything prepped and ready for us to relax, recharge, and explore the surrounding areas! We especially liked the cork board with neat information and activities.

Great property
Fabulous location in mcElmo’s canyon, next to archaeological preserve. No cell reception in the area, but WiFi is provided, so no concerns there. Rooms were comfortable. The porch with hummingbird feeds was adorable, and kept everyone entertained in the mornings! Sunrises over the canyon were beautiful.

Very quiet, great scenery.
Comfortable country home with comfortable bed. Nice porch swing to sit on and watch the humming birds and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Nice car port. I would recommend the Notah-Dineh Trading Company in Cortez for authentic Native American items. We enjoyed 11 beautiful days at this place and all of the beauty of the surrounding area.

This fit our needs perfectly
I’m late in submitting this. We were there in the fall on 2022. We loved the location but understand that it’s not for everyone. It was a great location for visiting mesa verde and hovenweep. A short drive to some spectacular hiking and breathtaking views of Ute Mountain.

Beautiful
The property was well stocked and had the most amazing views. We were able to cook/prep meals with ease. The added personal touches like the binder with information about the area and recommendations, games and plenty of seating was much appreciated. We woke up to enjoy the sunrise most mornings. With my family of 4 and grandparents, we were all comfortable. Close to Mesa Verde and grocery stores.

Very nice house with great view.
Wonderful house about 20 minutes from Cortez. Loved the view from the back porch looking out to the red rock cliffs. Took the hike to the Kiva on property which was very cool. Enjoyed watching the humming birds and the prairie dog in the back yard. The kitchen is large and beds are comfortable. We spent our time visiting Mesa Verda which was amazing. Would not hesitate to rent this house again. Paige

Cortez in Spring
We really enjoyed the privacy and location of the home. Covered parking allowed for unloading/loading of gear out of the weather. The home was clean and very comfortable. Kitchen is well equipped. Best of all is how the home faces east to allow for watching sunrise from living room and front porch. We had some problem with heat and hot water, both issues resolved quickly after contacting owner. We would love to stay here again

Nice rustic cabin close to Canyon of the Ancients
We enjoyed our stay at this property and were pleased with the location. It's about an hour from Mesa Verde, but at the back door of one of Canyon of the Ancients' hiking trail. As soon as we mixed up sugar-water nectar, the hummingbirds appeared, which was a treat! The property is clean, provides all the necessities, and was an overall enjoyable stay. We did have a problem with the peacock, but it has since found a new home and should no longer be a bother.

Perfect for the Occassion
I rented this property for family/friends to stay for my wedding. It was absolutely perfect. Bernard was a pleasure to work with and was responsive to my every request. The view from the porch is breathtaking. The price is right and the accommodations are so much better than the Kelly Place located just a bit further down the road. (I rented both, so I know). My bridesmaids and I used this residence to prepare for the wedding so it will always have a special place in my heart.

Great base for historic adventures
We were looking forward to adventure when we booked this property and were very pleased. The house was as we hoped and the swamp cooler and window ACs were essential as it was HOT. Although it was fascinating having prairie dogs right off the front porch, we were a little concerned with our dog and interactions and other possibilities... It was also unfortunate that trail to the creek was a bit overgrown with weeds and tamarisk and we realize the challenges with that. That said, it was well worth busting the brush to explore beyond the foot bridge. There were also several trailheads nearby giving access to some incredible country and the short trip to Hovenweep was incredible. We would definitely stay again.

Cortez cabin stay in September 2017
This is a wonderful, quite property. Has everything you need in a home. No cell service for Verizon or AT & T, even with a cell booster. Stayed 2 nights while visiting Mesa Verde National Park. We did have a problem with our second night, arriving after being at Mesa Verde all day, and that was no water! Turns out the well pump went bad. Owner did give us a refund for the second night. Wish we could have stayed longer to explore the 35 acres. I would have given 5 stars, but for the water issue.

Secluded and relaxing
Bernard's place worked perfectly our needs. I was travelling with 2 Siberian Huskies, so this was much better than staying in a motel. The cabin is about 10 minutes from town, and very secluded. It could have been more relaxing, but there are dogs next door that bark a lot at night - not a deal-breaker though. There is a small fenced area for pups in front of the house. The backyard, however is not closed in, so I ended up using a tie out. The house itself is older, but clean. For this price point, I thought it was a great deal. If you drive an ATV, there is access to BLM land about 15 minutes down the road, starting at the Cannonball Mesa Trailhead (37°20'50.4"N 108°55'56.7"W). There are enough trails for a full day of riding and, if you get lucky, you'll come across some ruins. All in all, a very pleasant stay.

Location & views are fabulous
This property has some good things going for it. The location was ideal for the areas we wanted to explore and the views off the back porch are stunning. With the exception of meal prep, which was mainly just arranging the food we cooked at home, we were out exploring, on the back porch, or asleep. The kitchen is adequately stocked, but we felt the need to wipe everything out or wash it before using, and the dish towels left a strong odor of laundry set fabric softener on everything. The house itself, inside and out really needs a deep clean and power wash. The dead bugs ( not just a couple) are a give-away that housekeeping is doing the bare minimum. There were dishes in the dishwasher upon our arrival. Beds are comfortable but bring your own pillows. Bathrooms were fine. I’d stay again if there were no other options but on the whole, it wasn’t up to our standards, and we are also VRBO Premier Hosts.

Great location but not clean
Loved the location and quiet. Would return but the living room and kitchen was actually disgusting. Living room: We had to move one of the couches and underneath it was a lot of trash - so that means the carpet has not been vacuumed. Underneath the carpet mat in the middle of the room had a wet spot and who knows what it was from. So not sure when it was actually steam cleaned. New carpets might be better. Kitchen: There was so much "crap" in the drawers and cabinets. They should be cleaned out. Like partially empty boxes, trash, really old spices and other items. It was scary opening them. Bedrooms and bathrooms were okay.

A mix of both.
We were at this property 5 days. The pros or this works as a basic no frills base camp for exploring the Cortez Mesa Verde area. The best feature of the property was the back porch which overlooked some amazing rock wall scenery where you could watch an amazing sunrise or the dun change the colors on the rocks in the evening time. This was probably our most basic VBRO experience. Where some rentals have had a "wow" factor this one was no frills with just the basics to serve as a vacation rental. There was a problem with the overall cleanliness i.e. cobwebs in corners, cobwebs on lamps and a real problem with multiple type of insects inside the house beatles, silverfish, spiders, Jerusalem crickets, and carpenter ants. Two of the rooms have no access to the swamp cooler air conditioning system so they were pretty hot for sleeping in temperatures over 100°.

Private and Peaceful
The property is located a short drive from Cortez and sits amid many ancient settlements (including some on the property). A 20 - 30 minute drive to Hovenweep, five minutes to Sun Canyon hikes, and 30 - 40 minute drive to Mesa Verde. There is an apple orchard on site which had several varieties, ripe for the picking. We saw different wildlife right in front of the cabin along with migrating hummingbirds. We really enjoyed staying here and can't wait to come back

Anniversary Trip
After some difficulty getting in the house and some wifi mix-up, our stay was wonderful. The location was perfect to go exploring Mesa Verde and Canyon of the Ancients. We had everything we needed for some quiet evenings at home. My grandson loved trying to get pictures of the hummingbirds from the front deck. My husband and I even extended our stay by a day after our family left. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here.

Gorgeous and perfectly quiet
We chose this house because it was dog friendly. We also looked at the location and checked with the owners to make sure there would be no fireworks on the Fourth of July. Our neighbors randondomly use fireworks starting in June and go through August; but the week of July 4th is the absolute worst. We have an eight year old dog that doesn’t need that kind of stress and this place was the greatest getaway we could have asked for. We had an hour an eight hour drive to get to this beautiful location and it was completely worth it.

Beautiful Property
This priory is set in a beautiful area! The views were amazing and the front porch was the perfect spot to take it all in. The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is because the dishes were pretty dirty but not sure the owner is supposed to check that after each stay. We just washed anything we used. I would definitely stay here again. Host was great!

Exploring Mesa Verde
We enoyed our stay in Cortez. The house was a little out of the way but once we arrived, it was perfect. Setting is beautiful and quiet and it afforded everything we needed for our short stay. I would suggest that you write down access code for door before arriving as we had no cell service to access the info. Once we connected to internet, we had no problems. We went mainly to see the cliff dwelling sites at Mesa Verde and were not disappointed! All in all we enjoyed our stay and the area is full of history and outdoor adventures One suggestion we had was maybe a lamp or two in living area for evenings.
