Gerardo and Ana Rita were class act hosts. The lodge is basic, but clean and cozy. We loved San Francisco , which is the little island that is a 5 minute ferry ride to Tortuguero. If a authentic community off the beaten path is what you want to experience, this is the place for you. We walked the path to the end of the island and happened upon the locals bar, which was 3 folks having a beer and listening to music on the point where the ocean meets the canal. Gerardo took us on a private boat tour of the canals and we saw birds, a river otter, a sloth , a cayman and a turtle. He is knowledgeable, kind and eager to socialize and share the history of the region. He also took us over to the beach across the way to walk and fish a bit. He hooked us up with the local fishing guide, Primo who took us out and we caught a Tarpon and saw countless turtles in the ocean. Victor, the chef, prepared very delicious meals for us daily with fresh fruit juices. We had fresh plantain and snook one evening caught by a local fisherman. The hammocks allowed us just what we needed to unwind and feel present. We look forward to the day we get to return. The water ferry was a bit unorganized and chaotic and it seems theres random boats coming and going and if you pay at the Pavalon Parking area for both directions, you may end up having to pay your return trip twice.

location is nice: very quiet compared to Torguero, nice garden, friendly staff; rooms are a bit small; bathroom should be redone (I cannot get used to Costa Rican electricity with exposed wires in the bathroom). Don't expect a Marriott/Hilton experience but a nice eco-B&B that is value for money

We loved the hospitality of Geraldo and Rita who could not have done more to make our stay so perfect. Rita's food was always very tasty and beautifully presented and Getalfo's guiding so informative.

Great Hosts, basin rooms
Hosts were excellent. Giraldo is a fine guide and the dinners were small but tasty. The rooms were very basic, but clean and there was hot water. We did not get daily housekeeping. To get there you get off at San Francisco, before Tortueuro on the ferry from La Pavona. Beware, Ana Rita convoyed you to dinner without telling you that she will charge $10 for it. Gialdo doesn’t tell you hat he will charge $30/person for the tour, and they then add 13% on both types of charges. It also costs at least $10 to get from Tortugeuro to Chinital by water taxi. Th hospitality of the hosts is the reason for the smile, lthough the location by the river also was nice.

To upgrade
At 10 pm, we had to kill maybe 10 mosquitos on our 2nd day here... As well we can see that nets on windows are not well installed. As well some of the isntallations like the sink need some small repairs. Breakfast needs upgrade too

Great service and value for money
Chinitas is a charming little lodge with about 6 rooms in the quiet village of San Francisco, a 5min taxi boat ride north of Tortuguero. In our opinion the distance to the center is actually a feature, not at all an issue. The owner is a very kind lady, who was fun to talk to and took any chance she could to help and serve us (e.g. offering us free freshly cut coconuts from the garden, or an extra large beach towel). We did a very nice canal tour with Hernando, who exclusively works for Chinitas. Our Spanish is mediocre, so we were positively surprised by his English (especially when it came to animals). We were only our family of four in the boat, whereas most boats we saw were loaded with about a dozen people (which can be annoying if the animal you'd like to see happens to be on the "wrong" side of the boat. Breakfast was hearty and healthy, with fresh fruit, eggs, rice with beans and some extras. The room was not big, but clean and had all we needed incl. hot water shower. Note that you cannot swim in the rivers, but you can cool down in the sea on the East side of Tortuguero.
