This is a gorgeous old seafront property that I first stayed in 40 years ago. They have, thankfully, upgraded the bathrooms since my original stay and the rooms are really lovely and in keeping with the style/age of the property. Breakfast is a delight with fantastic choices both Asian and western at The Verandah and the staff in the morning are lovely and really helpful, even bringing a cake to the table with candles and singing to my husband on his birthday! Insist on a king room if you want a larger bed as they seem to have many twins. They definitely need to do some maintenance on the outside of the property, pool deck has issues and there were electricity problems in the bathrooms/gym near the pool. The housekeeping is also inconsistent, we had one person who was fabulous for the first night and thereafter things were missed. Despite a few failings I will return to this hotel!

Delicious buffet style dining spreads for breakfast, lunch, high tea, and dinner. Beautiful dining/ lawn area overlooking the water - booked the hotel to attend friend’s wedding at the hotel - event went smoothly, staff were really hospitable, top notch and speed laundry and dry cleaning service. Regal, historic property with its own unique charm.

This is a classic old world hotel with updated modern amenities. We always stay here. The location is excellent too, and it is the only hotel in Colombo right on the water.

Sehr schönes altes Hotel, dem man noch den alten Glanz ansieht. Hotel ist sauber , aber nicht gut gepflegt. Schönes Zimmer mit toller Terrasse mit Meerblick, bequeme Betten. Schreckliches Frühstück mit eingeschränkter Auswahl und zumindest nicht ganz hygienischem Aussehen. Leider fast ganztags Beschallung mit Musik, zeitweise sogar aus verschiedenen Quellen, hellhörige Zimmer. Bei dem schönen Gebäude etc. könnte man soviel mehr daraus machen.

Its a stunning sea view, excellent food and very good staff. Our room upgrade made all the difference. I wish there were more plug points to charge devices (there was just one in a junior suite) and a couple of other small things were missing, but overall it is a great place. I would go again.

Tip 1: ask for no-sea view if there's a wedding function on the sea terrace, if loud music might bother you. Tip2 : for 1 or 2 travellers going to the airport ask Reception to book you a 7,500 rupee 'kangaroo cab' *private. The hotel airport transport is good, but better & bigger for a group.

Lovely but needs better maintenance
I’m very fond of this historic hotel and lived here for 2 months many many years ago when I was a young child. Stayed here last about 10 years ago when they were doing major renovations. They need to do more. Some things are run down and neglected. The swimming pool decking was broken in multiple places and has not been repaired. The fridge in my room really did not work and the control button was broken. Lots of small maintenance issues that need to be addressed. It smacks of complacency at the top. Staff are good, breakfast was great and it’s a glorious setting. But it’s a very famous hotel resting on its laurels.
