Before we even arrived to the property, we noticed a strong odor that smelled eerily similar to human feces which seemed to be coming from the lake. We stopped by a restaurant while we waited for our check in time and the waitress told us that in the summer, a large algae bloom occurs throughout the lake that causes the whole area near the lake to strongly smell like feces and makes the swim unsafe for humans to swim in. As we got closer to the lake, we noticed that it looked nothing like the photos and instead was an opaque dark green and the smell of feces was even stronger the closer we got to the lake. This was unfortunate because the cabin was right next to the lake so every time a door or window would open, we would be met with the intense and sickening smell. The smell wouldn’t get inside for the most part but at night, every single one of us noticed the smell would get in to the bedroom and it woke us up and made it difficult to fall back asleep.
Information about the lakes algae and associated scent can be found through google if you’d like to learn more.
The cabin was very nice and if it wasn’t for the algae making the water unsafe for swimming, I could see how it could be a nice time. Unfortunately, the listing and communications with the owner made it seem like the lake would be fine for our stay as they never informed us about this situation and when asking about things to do in the area, their primary recommendation was to spend time near/in/on the lake
