We are frequent visitors to Maine’s Down East, having stayed at various places including Spring River Lake (but at a different cabin) over the last decade. So, the beautiful nature and tranquility at James and Pamela’s cottage were not unexpected. Yet, we were very impressed by the house itself. It has been recently renovated and is indeed a large single-level property, although the owners made the lower-level basement accessible to the guests as well. You get a spacious entry room, then you get a large kitchen, a dining room, a huge living room with panoramic windows facing the lake that continues into a hall with a TV and a couch, from where you can access a balcony, a very large bathroom (hand-held shower!) with a washer and dryer and the two bedrooms, one of which has its own half bath. In the kitchen, you get a modern large fridge, a five-burner stove, a microwave and enough china, cutlery, and various gadgets to satisfy a professional chef. You also get cleaning supplies, paper towels and then some. On top of that, the house has central heating along with a separate fireplace. They also get Internet through a satellite, not very fast but reliable, and a landline phone. In all, you are set for a worry-free vacation with all modern conveniences, yet at a totally serene place.
The communication with the owners was very good. When we needed help, they had their daughter-in-law visiting us in a matter of minutes.
We do not know whether this was because of the house being in top shape, or due to some good spirits, but from the moment we entered the cottage, it was the true tranquility that dominated our senses. We hope to return.
