Population:
Canyelles is a village of 3,500 inhabitants, picturesque and endearing, located in a small valley, flanked by various elevations (Puig de l'Àliga, Puig de les Forques and Montgròs) and a strategic place for its link between the Sea and the mountain. The municipality is surrounded by protected natural areas such as the Olèrdola Park and the Garraf Park. It is possible that the origin of the population was an fortification of advanced defense of the bastion of Olèrdola, since, at the time of the Hispanic Brand, the Canyelles river was the route that connected the sea with the interior populations. Today, this stream is bordered by the C-15 county road.
The town maintains a small old town well preserved and topped by a castle with medieval vestiges of the fifteenth century and with narrow and steep streets that lead us to it.
Environment:
Canyelles is also the starting point for climbing on foot, by bike or on horseback to the peaks of L’Àliga (358 m.) And El Montgròs (278 m.), Two privileged viewpoints of the region. In addition, the municipality houses a series of interior roads where you can make different nature and cultural routes to discover the green landscape of Canyelles.
One of the activities that can be carried out in this municipality is the practice of climbing to the walls of the penya de l’Escofet, a place known as La Facu, and which is located in the Olérdola Park.
It is very advisable to visit Viladellops, three kilometers from Canyelles, a nucleus that preserves all the rural charm. It is a typical Catalan farmhouse surrounded by nature and vineyards. They emphasize the chapel of Sant Joan de Viladellops, Romanesque construction of the twelfth century, in excellent condition, and the medieval defense tower.
You can continue the visit to the monumental complex of Olèrdola, one of the most important archaeological sites in Catalonia. In the High Middle Ages, Olèrdola played an important role in the defense and repopulation of southern Catalonia. The complex is part of the Archeology Museum of Catalonia, and its facilities include an interpretation center, which hosts an exhibition and a guided tours service. The most notable remains of this set are the wall, the Roman tower, Iberian dwellings, a large Roman cistern and a tower, cave paintings, the Romanesque and pre-Romanesque Church of Sant Miquel and, outside the walls, the plain of Els Albats, where you can see small anthropomorphic tombs carved into the rock.
