Private waterfront cottage with pool on Church Creek

Close to Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge and the Harriet Tubman Center, enjoy peaceful days at our secluded waterfront cottage on Church Creek. Two miles from a main road, and our closest neighbor is across a cove, our estate offers 50 acres of privacy and one of the best waterfront views on the Chesapeake. Relax, enjoy a view from every window and nature all around you. Excellent walking, swimming (in-ground pool-May 3 -Oct 1), great birding and bicycling. Launch your kayak from the backyard. Perfect private getaway!

The space
Plan your escape at Harwood's Choice, our 50-acre estate, a natural, peaceful, rustic setting with excellent views of Church Creek, with privacy and space. The cottage and main house sit on a five-acre parcel of yard and waterfront; there is quite a bit of distance between the two houses. The pool is located a short walk from the cottage. Our remaining 45 acres are wooded with lanes to walk. It is the perfect place for either a private weekend getaway or a long-term place to work virtually, as we now have streaming WiFi. Note that the owners do not live on the property but occasionally visit the main house for a few hours. We always check with our guests before planning a visit.

Newly renovated, gorgeous in-ground pool and deck with water views available for guests' exclusive use at their own risk (May- Sept). There are four lounge chairs and two umbrellas for relaxing and sunning on the pool deck.

Excellent for watching birds, deer, fox, wild turkeys, eagles, osprey, and just relaxing and enjoying the peace of nature and the water. Originally built as servants' quarters for the main house, Harwood Cottage overlooks a cove of Church Creek. Guests are welcome to wander and explore this peaceful place. Our place is so special to us that in 2006, we placed it in the Maryland Environmental Trust, which means that it will be conserved forever, and will never be subdivided.

Beautiful country lanes for walks and bird-watching. The perfect place to get away from it all.

We do not permit hunting on our property or fishing from our shoreline. You may not bring onto the property the carcass of a hunted animal.

We now have Starlink WiFi! Our measured speed is 277 MBPS, which is suitable for streaming.

This lovely cottage can sleep 2 couples, 2 singles, or a couple and a single. It has two bedrooms upstairs with nice views of our cove, each with a king bed; one of the beds is a California king. Both are memory foam mattresses. The bedrooms are nestled in a dormer, so one side has a sloping ceiling. Both bedrooms have quiet, wall-mounted mini-split HVAC units with remote controls. No more noisy window AC units!

Downstairs has a fully equipped kitchen with an island. Kitchen has a Keurig coffee service with k-cups. There is a microwave, glasstop electric stove and a small countertop dishwasher. Dishes, silverware, pots, pans, stock pot, cooking utensils and BBQ cooking tools are all supplied.

Kitchen has a side entrance door that leads to a small patio with a charcoal grill and table and chairs for al fresco dining. There is another patio with Adirondack chairs closer to the water's edge. Both patios are for the exclusive use of our guests (seasonal).

Dining room and living room each have a wall-mounted mini-split HVAC unit with remote control.

First floor bathroom has bathtub/shower combo; towels, wash clothes, soap, conditioner, lotion are provided.

Utility room has a SpeedQueen washer and dryer (with steam setting for removing wrinkles). Bug spray, laundry detergent, citronella candles, first-aid kit and fire extinguisher are provided.

Patio, chairs, and charcoal grill are located out the side door. Citronella candles supplied; please bring your own charcoal.

There are four chaise lounges and two umbrellas on the pool deck for poolside relaxing.

Bring your binoculars. We have quite an array of bird life including bald eagles, osprey, kingfishers, prairie warblers, bluebirds, cuckoos, great-horned owls, overwintering diving ducks, a family of red-headed woodpeckers, northern bob-white quail, and a fascinating Chuck-will's-widow whom we hear at night in the summertime.

No smoking or vaping anywhere in the house or outside- ANYWHERE.

Bring your kayak, canoe, or SUP and launch right behind the cottage into our cove and explore as far as you wish. Church Creek leads into Fishing Creek which leads to the Little Choptank River and then into the Chesapeake Bay.

Children under age 13 are not permitted. You must be at least 25 years old to book this house.

WE DO NOT PERMIT pets or Emotional Support Animals. Any violations of this rule will result in additional cleaning fees and will be reflected in your review.

Ten minutes to Cambridge.

Check out is 11 am.

Guests may walk the grounds but they are not permitted to enter any of the other buildings on the property.

We do not host events of any kind in this space. We are not an event venue and any guests who use the space for a purpose other than an overnight stay will be asked to leave immediately and will be charged additional fees.

Utopia
This was one of the most beautiful spots I've seen. Kayaking was wonderful! Couch was very uncomfortable. And many maybe put off to find they must put everything in a box to keep away from rodents. And I just took my garbage home as we didn't have time to dump at an off site location on vacation. I would still book again as it was the most peaceful, charming and secluded place to truly relax!

Adorable little house on the Water
We loved our short stay at this little home on the water. The house was spotless, the bed was very comfortable, and it had everything we needed. We saw lots of wildlife and the sunsets were beautiful! The host was wonderful to work with. Internet was a little spotty, which would have made "working" from there difficult, but we managed. Would definitely come back again!

Wonderful getaway
My daughters and I really needed a break, and this place was perfect! Very clean and had everything as described. Peaceful location with stunning sunsets. We went on bike rides and had picnics and slept so peacefully. The house is so quiet! Cindy was very responsive and easy to communicate with. We will be back for sure. I recommend this place highly. Loved it!

A True Oasis
This little oasis is as peaceful and beautiful as described. Great Horned Owls, Eagles, geese, and deer visited me. The variety of birds was extraordinary, and the location was tranquil and secluded. The cottage is small, but the weather permitted me to enjoy the grounds, and the pool was a bonus. One item to note: the bedrooms are upstairs, and the one bathroom is downstairs, so if you need to use the bathroom in the middle of the night like me, you'll need to navigate the dark, steep stairs. It did not impact my enjoyment and relaxation at this beautiful getaway. I highly recommend it.

Birdwatching by the Bay
My son recently got interested in avian photography so we were looking for a place between the Blackwater Wildlife Refuge and Cambridge. We found the two-bedroom cottage at Harwood’s Choice and the location was instantly appealing, as the residence met our requirements and was located on a point on Church Creek. The cottage was comfortable—especially the beds. The owner kindly included a stocked Keurig coffee maker. Sunrise snd sunset were spectacular over the water. Looking forward to visiting again.

Everything was as described but more beautiful in person. We would love to stay at this stunning property again.

Very Nice Spot for A Getaway
We enjoyed everything about the property. Everything was clean and orderly, and we were provided with all you would need for a nice vacation. The view was excellent and the area was very quiet. We were left alone and free to enjoy the amazing view. There is not much more you can ask for from a property.

Quiet & Relaxing.......Perfect
The goal of our trip to this cottage was to relax and unwind, and this place didn't disappoint! Beautiful location and very quiet. We were greeted every day by whitetail deer and lots of canadian geese. Its close enough to Cambridge if you want to find things to do and check out Hoopers Island! The owners were great in communication and the cottage was well stocked! The pool was excellent. I would definitely stay here again!

Weekend away
The cabin was surrounded with lovely water views from every window. I woke up the first morning to the treat of seeing a bald eagle in a tree outside my window. Lots of nature to make bird watchers happy. We saw a flock of northern flickers and wild turkeys in addition to our bald eagle friend. The cabin had everything we needed and the beds were quite comfortable. It was a very nice weekend away.

Beautifully located cottage by the river
My wife and I enjoyed the weekend in this serene location. The cottage was neat and clean and had everything we needed. The online description is accurate. We saw fox, deer, wild turkeys, birds, and beautiful fall foliage. We actually saw more wildlife at the property than at the nearby Blackwater Wildlife Refuge. The water views were gorgeous as well.

Perfect Stay
The house and property were pretty much as described except that they were a little more peaceful and relaxing than the description!! A perfect home base for visiting Blackwater NWR and for touring the local sights. A wonderful chorus of frogs, chuck will's widows and great horned owls at night. Emily's Produce was a local treat for providing great local food to cook at home. Maryland Blue and Portside Restaurants were great for our dinners out. Thank you.

Harwood Cottage is a gem!
We had a spectacular time, one of our best vacations - and one we hope to repeat. Harwood Cottage is clean, well kitted out and perfectly organized for a wonderful retreat. The grounds are spectacular, we were able to launch our kayaks right from the yard. It was peaceful and gorgeous. Cyndi helped us out by suggesting boat routes and some great bike rides right from the place. Having coffee and watching the sunrise over the water was a real treat. Everything about this place was just perfect! Can't wait to come again!!!

Wonderful waterfront seclusion
We had a terrific weekend relaxing out by the water in the mornings with the ospreys and egrets, and enjoying Cambridge in the evenings. Nearby produce stand was outstanding, as was our 4 hours of kayaking in the Blackwater refuge just ten minutes away. Could have stayed a week! House was pleasant, although not all rooms had working air conditioners.

Lovely setting on the water!
We booked the cottage for a long weekend to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. It was simply lovely. The draw for us was the water access, which was very easy using our canoe. The weather had turned cooler the weekend we visited so we can’t report on the pool, although it certainly looked wonderful, or the air conditioning, which we didn’t need. Overall, we definitely recommend both the setting and Cyndi as a host! Three small considerations: 1. As Cyndi clearly points out in her description, the bathroom is downstairs from the bedrooms. This was only an issue for us at night; a flashlight solved the problem of navigating down the stairs. (Now that I write this, I guess a nightlight in the bathroom would have been helpful.) 2. There are deer on the property, which means deer ticks that carry Lyme disease. We’re used to checking for ticks, but for those not familiar with MD pests, a thorough tick check at the end of the day is recommended. 3. If you plan to use the water access, be sure to bring your water shoes or wellies. At high tide (especially near the full moon when we stayed), the ground near the water access/launch site got quite squelchy.

Peaceful Cozy Cottage
My husband and I had a wonderful week away unwinding and relaxing. The cottage is exactly as described-no more, no less- and an excellent price. (Note: There was no A/C but we didn't need it at all with the windows open- assuming they bring the units in later in April and it was nice to have the open view of the surrounding water). The water in front of the cottage is calm and beautiful- like a reflective glass making the sunsets even more beautiful. Great for canoeing (one canoe is available) or kayaking (bring your own). The cottage is very close to Blackwater Wildlife Refuge which was a big draw for us. This time of year saw lots of interesting bird behavior right at the cottage - Canada geese courting, black vultures mating, bluebirds & chickadees nesting, eagle flying by, an osprey fishing (and grabbing branches from the snag next to the patio for its nest-amazing!), a loon, mallards, and buffleheads plus others. Every day was something interesting to see. Also got to see the fox as we were leaving. Extremely private- the owner is on site but rarely saw him. The night sounds were frogs peeping and chirping; the morning sounds were a symphony of birds or ospreys calling. The night time revealed a canopy of beautiful stars for those of you who like star-gazing. The beds are very comfortable; the house very clean. We both unfortunately had to work briefly and the internet worked well for us (cell phone service was spotty but workable). Perfect size for the two of us and plenty of kitchen utensils, plates, etc to use; took advantage of the keurig coffee bar which had a wide array of offerings. Would recommend taking along some camping chairs (outdoor folding chairs) - there are andirondack chairs but not as easy to move to different locations along the shore to watch birds, and I personally just like to sit up a bit more- and a camping or folding table. I would have loved to eat outside by the grill or had somewhere to put down my coffee or wine glass but not easily done with just the chairs provided - when we go again, we'll take those along. . Nearby try Emily's Produce to get meat, eggs, dairy, veges, ice cream, smoothies, jams, sauces, homemade pies (or there is also a food lion not far away). Also recommended Ocean Odyssey for some great nearby takeout crabcakes or shrimp and Porter's Soul Food for some truly excellent comfort food. Love the town, love the refuge, and love this little cottage that is a hideway from the world.

We spent 4 days at this beautiful spot. The cottage had everything we needed and the property was quiet and well- kept. Peaceful retreat surrounded by woods and water
We came from the metro DC area for a weekend of canoeing in the Blackwater Wildlife Refuge Area. We also brought our bikes, with plans to ride, but the weather didn't cooperate with us. We knew that there was a launch area right outside the cottage, and we could have used that to put in our canoe, but we opted to drive over to a nearby location that we had chosen for our paddle. The cottage was lovely, and very comfortable. We had everything we needed - the kitchen is well appointed. We went out to a great restaurant (Ava's has wonderful pizza and Italian food), but stayed in a cooked our second night. Eating out at the table in the back yard, with views of the water, and sounds from birds all around was lovely. Cyndi is an excellent and responsive host, and made our stay perfect. There were plenty of brochures about locations of interest in the areas, which we would have utilized had we not already planned our trip fairly thoroughly.
