Escape to this old farmhouse and enjoy the nature around you
Overall 4.5/5 but it doesn't allow for half points.
The wonderful old farmhouse with its stone steps and brick floors overlooking the nearby hills, from the scent of honeysuckle each time you pass through the door, to the cool rustic kitchen at the rear of the house. The smaller bathroom could do with a bit of an update and neither bathroom has particularly good ventilation even with the skylight. Mosquito count was low. We did not use the room at the top (with the four bed and an outstanding view) but it did feel particularly warm. There are ceiling fans in all bedrooms but no air-con. Though I would have to question why would one go to Tuscany on holiday, if not for some warm weather and sunshine!
The terrace is great to relax on and to enjoy the view, though it does get very hot during the day and the dark coloured umbrellas, whilst stopping the light, do not stop the IR heat. The cheap plastic dining furniture is not in keeping with the property at all and deserves to be replaced with something a little more upmarket and comfortable.
The garden area with its loungers under the beautiful trees is a super way to while away an afternoon between dips in the pool.
The pool is big enough for a proper swim and despite being shared, was quiet enough to have it to yourself for periods of the day. It is not illuminated which is a crying shame as an evening swim would've been marvellous with such an eye-catching backdrop.
There are a couple of other properties on site but it is private enough that you will not be bothered by other guests.
The nearby town of Camaiore is walkable but I wouldn't really advise it. The road by the house is narrow and the last 500m or so must be the testing ground for the Mars Lunar Rover such is the poor state of it (both the public section and within the grounds).
It is a nice enough town and we would highly recommed the gelateria in the main square (Gelateria Mondo Goloso) and for a morning coffee and pastry, head to the excellent Lorenzo Pasticceria & Caffè (gets very busy on Sat and Sun mornings). Avoid the "Ristorante Pizzeria Mr. G&B", one of the worst pizzas I have ever eaten!
We liked the Candalla waterfalls a 10mn drive, ignore the first pools by the mill and head up higher. Viareggio and wall-to-wall soulless private beaches that go on for miles is awful. Head to Lucca instead and rent bikes to ride atop the amazing city walls.
We would definitely considering returning to this property and area again!
