Silvermine Retreat - Silvermine Retreat-Nantahala Gorge minutes to NOC

Who is ready for adventure?

Silvermine Retreat is a quintessential Smoky Mountain cabin ideally situated between the Appalachian Trail on the ridge above and the Nantahala River and Outdoor Center (NOC) exactly two miles below. World-class amenities for kayaking, rafting, hiking, mountain biking, and fly fishing are nearly right out your front door. After your day on the water or in the mountains, head back to the cabin for a soak in the hot tub next to the campfire or listen to the creek while swinging on the screened porch. If you’re too worn out to make use of the fully stocked kitchen and propane grill, the River’s End Restaurant, Big Wesser Riverside Pub (with frequent live bluegrass), and a general store are located right at the bottom of the hill.

The cabin is cozy and romantic enough for just a couple but equipped for a group of up to nine people. Accommodations include ensuite bathrooms in both the master (queen bed) and guest (two full beds) bedrooms on the second floor and a queen pullout sofa, twin daybed, and full bathroom with laundry machines on the first floor. Access to the second story is provided through a spiral staircase in the living room and an outdoor staircase by the front door.

Families with young kids will be happy to find a Pack and Play, high chair, box of toys, and stack of board games. Additionally, kids and adults alike will love taking a ride through the Nantahala Gorge on the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad, located in Bryson City only 15 minutes from the NOC. And for those unable to completely disconnect, the high-speed satellite internet provides plenty of bandwidth for remote work. Up to two dogs are permitted with an additional fee.

Silvermine Retreat provides easy access to Tail of the Dragon and the Cherohala Skyway and is just over an hour from Clingmans Dome and the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. The driveway was extended in 2022 to make motorcycle access more friendly. Although there are gravel roads leading to this cabin, they are packed and maintained by the county, making the Silvermine Retreat a great way to get into the mountains year-round. While we have indicated this listing as “motorcycle friendly,” this assumes that riders coming to this area are experienced with mountain roads. Each individual should assess their own skill level and consider conditions before relying on our assessment or feel free to contact our office for specifics about towing a trailer.

Make sure you check out the Xplorie program that is included with every stay at a Watershed Cabin. This benefit provides a free admission to each of several area attractions every single day of your stay!

Cozy little getaway
My boyfriend and I stayed here for a weekend getaway recently. We ducky rafted the Nantahala and zip lined over the mountains. We loved the hot tub and the fire. And the place was just so cozy overall. Great spot just a few minutes from the Nantahala. Beautiful. Also loved that it was pet friendly. We would definitely stay again.

The location was nice. The house has cobwebs on the light fixtures. The washing machine will not wash clothes only spin and rinse. The cookware in the house is terrible. The pots and pans are rusted or the non stick coating is coming out. Other than these items it was a good place to stay.

Very bad experience & will never book a stay with this cabin rental company.
Was notified 2 hours before arriving to the cabin, and myself with my family live 6 hours away, that due to weather conditions there was no water at the cabin. I was led to believe that the water issue was being worked on and upon arriving at the cabin a maintenance guy arrived at the same time. There actually was running water at the well, but the problem was the water heater inside the cabin. Later the water heater busted & was spitting water out everywhere. We contacted the cabin rental office & reported the issue & were told someone would be sent out to check out the problem. No one came & by the time we awoke the following morning still no one had came to check out the busted water heater. The cabin rental office was notified again & at that point myself & my family had decided to vacate the cabin due to the problems. Due to medical conditions & small children we could not & would not stay in a cabin with no water. When we arrived the cabin was dirty with dirty dishes in the sink & dishwasher. Also one room had no operating heat. Spoke with the manager about vacating the cabin and was told to call back once we vacated and that we would get a full refund. Didn't happen. Yes did receive a refund, but not even half. This cabin rental office made no effort in trying to satisfy myself & my family. Needless to say my Christmas family vacation was ruined. 😡

Christmas getaway
Considering that we didn't have electricity for the first two nights and then the pipes froze we made the best of it it's a Christmas for the books

Nice place, dirty hot tub
Cabin is cute and cozy. Kids loved the spiral staircase but not great for older folks. Very peaceful. We loved using the fireplace. Hot tub was filthy and unusable. Brown scum was all over the insides. Management stated that it was normal and safe to use.

Be prepared for a secluded mountain experience.
The cabin is very nice, but be prepared for a rural, mountain, experience. Make sure you have a vehicle that can handle narrow, gravel country roads. The driveway entrance to this property is very steep, it was difficult for my 2 wheel drive SUV to get to the top. Recommend you have a 4WD vehicle when you visit this area. The attractions in the area are also accessable by similar narrow roads. The steep mountain terrain interferes with internet and GPS service, have a good map of the area on hand. Bring as many essentials with you if you can. Bryson City is about 30 minutes away. Keep your vehicle topped off with fuel, gas stations are far apart. Local attractions (zip lines, rafting, trails) are close by and alot of fun.

Nice cabin near the Nantahala River
Nice clean neat cabin over all a great get away. Only thing we would suggest is add some improvements to the driveway. Its little scary hard to get traction even with front wheel drive full size VW Passat. They driveway in my opinion almost 4Wheel drive. Just food for thought. Overall a very nice cabin, very close to NOC.

Mountain retreat, well built, very comfortable.
Nice place. Wish we could have stayed longer. A coulple of light bulbs were missing or out, which is annoying. They need another night table on the master bed for phone/water on the other side. (The light on that side of the master bed was broken and needs a bulb) We put a chair and lamp on it for a nightstand.
