Makere Cottage is available once more for short term rental, starting from July 2023. It is nestled on Soldier Hill with gentle breezes and breath taking views over Cane Garden Bay, surrounding islands and the Caribbean Sea. Situated within a tropical garden at the end of a short gated drive with a private 20-foot swimming pool and large sun terrace, Makere Cottage represents the ideal retreat in which to relax and unwind.

The cottage is very spacious and ideal for a couple either travelling alone or with children. However, it is not suitable for toddlers due to the steep drop from the balcony and unfenced swimming pool. The master bedroom has a king-size bed, views over the bay and plenty of closet space. The large living room, which also has plenty of closet space, is very comfortable with a 3 seater sofa bed, armchair, day bed and dining table and is linked to the master bedroom via an adjoining 10-foot wide covered deck. The kitchen has all modern requirements and connects to the large private bathroom. There are a washing machine and tumble dryer in the nearby pump room.

The swimming pool is on the same level as the cottage offering a welcome escape from the Caribbean heat. A sun terrace providing a spacious area for both sunbathing and al fresco dining surrounds the pool. The cottage has been built very much in the ‘Caribbean Style’ with wooden decks, blue shutter windows, white walls and terracotta-tiled floors creating a clean and simple environment. With its positioning up on the hill there is usually a lovely cooling breeze at all times of year.

As you will read in the reviews Makere Cottage was a popular holiday rental villa until Hurricane Irma struck the BVI in September 2017. Following the storm Makere was repaired and refurbished and put into long term rental whilst the island got back on its feet. With the beaches back to their glorious best and the gardens and vegetation fully recovered we decided to put Makere Cottage back into short term rental starting in July 2023.

You will need to hire a 4-wheel drive vehicle on arrival in Tortola. We can provide you with contact details for a local car rental company who will meet you at the airport or ferry terminal and, if arriving after hours, arrange for you to be collected and taken to Makere Cottage where you car will be waiting. We will provide you with directions and a Google Maps Pin with which to find the property.

Makere Cottage is one of two villas on the property. Both are of a similar size and completely private and separate to one another. Makere House is on the upper level with Makere Cottage below. To reach Makere Cottage you park on the upper level entrance drive and then walk down some stairs (approx. 20 steps) to reach the Cottage and swimming pool.

Makere House is occupied by a young Canadian couple who work all day in the Charter Boat industry. They will fully respect your privacy but will be available if you require any local knowledge or in case of an emergency.

Our property manager, Mobbsie, who lives nearby can also provide emergency assistance if you need it and his contact number will be provided.

What a view!
My husband and I spent our 25th anniversary here and couldn't have enjoyed it more, other than staying longer! We traveled around the whole island, visiting amazing cove after amazing cove. The people are very friendly and I was amazed at how clean the beaches were and not many stray animals, which always makes me sad on vacation. Thank you for an amazing cottage and vacation!!

The views from this property were absolutely stunning. I think the balcony overlooking cane bay was our favorite spot. Coffee on the balcony was so soothing for the soul. We would return in a heartbeat.

Unbelievable View
We loved our stay at Makere Cottage in the BVI. The view was so beautiful and the cottage was quite spacious. We spent at least a little time each night on the porch looking down on the tranquil setting of Cane Garden Bay. Brewer's Bay was just a short drive down the opposite side of the ridge and it's an even more peaceful and idyllic beach. I'd highly recommend Makere Cottage for the location, comfort, amenities, and the view!

Perfect getaway
Our stay at Makere Cottage was wonderful. The cottage has everything we needed. Plenty of space, well-appointed kitchen, beautiful views, and our daily visitor Tola - the resident friendly and beautiful cat. We spent lazy days at the pool and hours sitting on the porch overlooking Cane Garden Bay. We loved opening all the double doors to allow for indoor/outdoor living. Took us a bit to master driving on the island and to the cottage itself, but once we did, we realized the location was perfect for us. Just a short drive down the hill to Cane Garden Bay and the west side of the island where we discovered beautiful beaches and an assortment of good restaurants. The cottage itself was very clean and we could not have asked for better accommodations. Highly recommend this fantastic rental.

Amazing Views!!!
We had an amazing stay at Makere Cottage. Everything we needed was right at our fingertips. The views were incredible and we loved the pool. Thank you to Tina for all of your recommendations. At Tina's recommendation we used Jerry's Rentals. They were so easy to deal with! We also took a day sail with Aristocats. Another wonderful experience! I would not hesitate to recommend Makere Cottage to a friend. We hope to return someday soon!

Do not HESITATE to book this cottage!! The view is unbelievable - stunning for coffee in the mornings and cocktails at night. It feels so private and secluded. The private pool overlooking Cane Garden is a huge splurge. The cottage is equipped with everything that you would need and has an extremely comfortable king size bed. It is in the perfect location on the island to have easy access to everything. Tina (the owner) is wonderful to communicate with and has fabulous recommendations from restaurants to beaches to tours to even which car rental company to use. Every suggestion was perfect. We had a MAGICAL VACATION!!!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!

Good Location Great View
Makere Cottage is perched high above Cane Garden Bay, which hosts the best group of beach restaurants on the island. The House was clean and stylish and we spent a lot of time on the balcony overlooking the bay. We found everything we needed to prepare our evening meals and clean up afterwards. The pool was a nice addition and was fairly private while the permanent renters were away at work. The walk to the cottage from the drive was a bit precarious especially when carrying heavy luggage down the two flights of stairs but we are in our 60s and could handle it fairly well. The only complaint we had was that the bed was particularly rickety and hard. Other than that I would strongly recommend this beautiful cottage

Fantastic View and Villa
Makere Villa is perched high on a hill over Cane Garden Bay. The view is wonderful. Not only is the view of the bay with lots of boating activities the hills on three side provide a different and interesting sights each afternoone and evening. The villa was very comfortable, well appointed and had everything we needed for a week's stay. The owners were most helpful before and during our stay. They gave us lots of important information with directions to the villa, nearby sights, restaurants etc. They recommended Jerry's Jeep and Car Rental which worked great for us. They were also very helpful in helping us learn the lay of the island. The property manager was also very helpful when we had a question. The villa helped make our week in Paradise perfect.

Hidden gem!!
Such a great place!! The pictures don't do it justice as it is SO much prettier in person!! Very relaxing, great views, tons of outdoor seating. Loved having a pool for the couple of days we needed a break from the beach. The privacy is incredible and love being tucked away like that where you felt like the only people anywhere around there. Tons of really good places to eat down in Cane Garden Bay. Paradise has some GREAT drink specials every night. Bananakeet was very, very, very good!! My suggestion for future visitors: 1) Pick up some ice and water on your way to the villa (gallon of water is great for brushing your teeth) and a pack of water bottles is a necessity 2) Bring some paper towels 3) Stop by the market or grocery store first since other than a couple of very small places there is not much around there 4) It can be difficult to find after dark so be sure to factor that in depending on what time you arrive on the island

Amazing views!
We stayed at Makere cottage in early December 2023. The location is high on a hill above Cane Garden Bay with the most lovely views. The cottage is simple to get to once you go the first time, but we arrived after dark. Thank goodness for the help from Chaniece at Jerry’s Car rental, who made arrangements to have a cab at the West End ferry to get us to the cottage where a car had been delivered for us. The cottage is as shown and described in the listing. We were grateful that there was air conditioning available in the bedroom for sleeping to cut some of the humidity, yet loved the open windows and doors to let in the sea breezes. Tina, the owner was readily available for any questions and the local property manager quickly took care of getting us a replacement item needed at the cottage. We love this end of Tortola - the beautiful beaches, views and dining options. Now we have a wonderful place to stay for the next time we return; the views from the covered deck are so amazing! I would highly recommend the Makere cottage.

Honeymoon Bliss!
My husband and I visited Makere Cottage for our honeymoon and found it to be the perfect place to unwind and relax. The house itself is sitting on top of a beautiful mountain overlooking Cane Garden Bay. Brewers bay is a very short drive from the house as well. So having to choose between Brewers Bay and Cane Garden Bay was the toughest choice of our days. The view is breathtaking every single time you look at it. The house was welcoming and perfect for the two of us. We were wishing we brought more people with us to enjoy the space of the property since it seems to be able to fit a large group. Mobbsie (the property manager) was so easy to work with even though we kept delaying our time of arrival. He was there when we arrived, showed us all around the property, and gave us tips on where to go. Tina (the owner of the property) was also incredibly helpful before our trip. She responded almost immediately to all my questions and was so welcoming to us. I would highly recommend this house for not only the beauty of the house and the island but the convenience as well!

A wonderful stay in Tortola
Makere Cottage was a perfect place to stay. We stayed in Tortola for a month this time and we couldn’t have selected a more perfect home. The property overlooks Cane Garden Bay which is beautiful and its location offers easy access to Road Town, restaurants and beaches. It is very roomy with good size rooms and plenty of closet space. We loved the kitchen and outdoor barbecue and the pool, which you don’t always find in a rental, was perfect. There isn’t anything more we could have asked for.and I recommend it highly.

Terrific Value!
I usually over research properties before actually booking and it paid off this time. I looked at many other rentals but every time I would end up back to Makere House. The price combined with the views and location is hard to beat. The cottage is very night and private with a gated drive. I also really like that we weren't to far anything in either direction. This gave us options when it came to which ferry to take or taking a day trip on Aristocrat. You also have terrific dining options all within a short drive. We loved Bananakeet, Sugar Mill, and D Coal pot. I would also like to give a big shout out to Big Sexy rentals. I have never had a better experience with a rental in my life. We had a flat one night at Cane Garden Bay and Big Sexy came and got us and took us back to the house then came back early in the morning to bring the car back to us with the tire fixed... A few days later we were going on a day trip to Jost and left the keys at the Ferry terminal on accident and didnt realize it. When we came back we thought the car had been stolen. We called Big Sexy to break the news to him and to our delight he had the car. The ferry had called him and let him know that one of his vehicles had been left so he came and got it assuming we were leaving to go back home. Once I explained the situation he came and got us with the vehicle in less than 15 minutes and was as nice as could be about it.

Makere honeymoon paradise
We had a magical stay at Makere cottage. Plenty of room for the two of us and a breathtaking view! The home had everything we needed in terms of cooking, etc. The pool was wonderful for cooling off after sailing and snorkeling adventures (be sure to go out on the Aristocat to the Indians- exceptional snorkeling). The AC in the bedroom kept us very comfortable for sleeping. We are already looking into a return trip next year! Thank you for sharing your lovely home.

Great little place
We enjoyed our stay at Makere. Despite a few power outages (rained and stormed several times), power was usually restored in descent time frame. You can't beat the views and the pool was great for our young boys! I like the quick access to town, and two great beaches, Brewer's and Cane Garden are so close. We loved Bananakeet Resraurant and the boys enjoyed the waves on Long Beach! Ferry to The Baths on Virgin Gorda is a must do! Thanks to Mosby, Tina and family for sharing your slice of paradise with us. We wish to return in the future! Gotta start saving again!

Third time at Makere!
This was our third visit to Tortola and every time we have stayed at Makere, however this was our first time in the house with our 5 year old son. We've always stayed in the cottage but our friends took the cottage this time. So we had both properties which was awesome! As always it was a beautiful stay and charming as the cottage! The house was clean, comfortable beds and everything we needed to cook in the house. The view is one I can never get tired of! I will note that the house does not have air conditioning but since its higher up there's a constant breeze and we even got a little cold at night after the rains stopped. Can't wait to return to Makere!

Lovely, secluded piece of paradise
Makere cottage really is all it's cracked up to be. The view... What can you say? It's more incredible than the pictures and we never got tired of soaking it in. My husband and I came to Tortola for our honeymoon and it was everything we hoped for. Breakfast on the deck overlooking Cane Garden Bay was one of my favorite things. Being able to sit in the shade and read at any time of day and enjoy the beauty was perfect for us. The cottage is also bigger in person, yet totally accurate from the pictures. Everything was wonderful and homey. The cottage met all of our needs and more. The snorkel equipment came in handy as we snorkeled several times during the trip. Brewer's Bay was our favorite Tortola beach. It was so nice and quiet. Secluded but not too far from the beaches and more. The private pool was great for days when you didn't feel like getting out. There is so much to see and do in the BVI we needed a rest occasionally! We had a fabulous experience and have already had friends say they want to come here as well. We want to come back on an anniversary. Thanks for a wonderful experience.

Wonderful vacation !
We had a wonderful vacation at Makere Cottage! The cottage was just perfect - exactly as pictured and described on your site. Everything was neat and clean and in perfect working order. The view is spectacular and we loved being near Cane Garden and other attractions on the western end of the island. We have been to Tortola many times as the starting place for sailing charters, but never to stay on land. This time, we stayed for a whole week, enjoying Tortola's beaches and a few visits to nearby islands. Our favorite beach was Josiah's Bay - beautiful sand and surf, surfers, and a couple of laid back beach bars. The Sugar Mill on Apple Bay is a terrific place for lunch! Thanks, Tina, for all of your help in preparing for the trip. You answered all of our questions. Mobbsie met us at Cane Garden upon our arrival and escorted us to the cottage, explaining all of the important things we needed to know for our visit. lovely place
no need to mention the view, that is why this place is so popular. Place was easy to find, before you descend down to Cane Bay, take the right fork signed Brewers Bay, go careful as the road now is very narrow. around 500-750 m the road forks right . Stop !! the house is on the left. Kitchen is small but adequate, small fridge in the house but larger fridge and freezer under main house with washing/drying machine. Shower is also adequate but a has a sharp edged grate in the floor so be careful, plenty of towels supplied. The road below the cottage did get noisy at times specially when the buses transported the cruise customers to and from the beach. Overall the place was lovely but I felt it lacked a bit of general maintenance. Pool and outdoor seating areas are just wonderful , used the gas bbq once which made for a nice al fresco meal. We used the Rite Way supermarket, Wickams Cay 2 just outside Road Town, opposite site of Rite Way going into Road Town is a lovely French Deli, great for lovely bread, cheese, meats and cakes !!

Trip of a Lifetime
My wife and I spent a week at Makere Cottage and we just got home last night. We miss it already. We miss the views from the terrace over coffee. We miss the sounds of the roosters waking us us so that we got a full day on the island to explore. We miss our afternoons by the pool. And we miss the wonderful people of Tortola. Makere has an ideal location near two perfect beaches and it is close enough to town to shop for essentials at the market and the bakery. It is very well equipped, spacious and had all that we needed to cook most of our own meals and relax in total privacy. Tina was extremely responsive throughout the booking process and the Cottage was well taken care of by Mobbsie and the team. We will be back to Tortola and Makere.

Exceptional!
Vacationing at Makere in BVI is nothing less than a taste of heaven. No matter how many days, 19 for us, it is never nearly enough. Tina, Adam, Mobbsie and crew, you all brought the right kind of wind in our sails. Bitter sweet is our departure...going home our family, friends, dogs and cats is going to our own paradise but leaving here brings sadness but also hope for a return in the near future. Excellent Get away
My wife and I stayed at Makere Villa for 9 incredible nights. A truly secluded spot, with gorgeous views everywhere you look. Located somewhat centrally to everything we wanted to do - surf, snorkel, explore. Tina and her caretaker Mobbsiee were both very attentive and helpful. This little stretch of paradise is run like a 4* hotel but felt like our own little house! Love being there and will surely return for years if not decades to come.
