A loud machine (generator?) ran outside our room for 1/2 hour early on Saturday morning which gave us an unwelcome and unwanted alarm call. While the hotel facilities and rooms were very good the food was not up to the same standard. Breakfast in particular was poor with cheap sliced bread and orange squash rather than fresh orange juice served. Not acceptable in any hotel never mind one in this price bracket.

This hotel is amazing!!! We have stayed in many five star hotels and this should be a five star hotel!!! It is extremely clean. The rooms are excellent, very good bathrooms. All furnished to a high standard. Would definitely recommend to friends and would definitely stay again. The history to this place is an added extra and the tours are a must

The building itself was lovely, a very unique property with high end finishing touches. But the service let it down. 45 minute wait for 2 cocktails, over an hour wait for 3 main course with a young child who was too tired to eat by the time dinner arrived. Staff seemed very stressed and overrun even though the bar and restuarant were not even half full. Very disorganised which was a real shame as it definitely took away from the uniqueness of the hotel.

I am waiting for a reply from the hotel regarding a particular member of staff and poor service but apart from that I would highly recommend the hotel and its uniqueness. A fantastic building with so much history. Rooms are wonderfully done.

The property was so unique and full of history. It has been beautifully done to a very high standard. Staff were all very friendly and attentive. Would definitely stay again.

The jail has been beautifully restored. The lighting looks incredible but it makes the room quite dark if you actually want to get ready. My biggest bug bearer is that there was no socket near a mirror with a shelf to get ready or do you hair. The staff were nice but all undertrained if any training at all.

Absolutely WOW. What an amazing place. Room was very comfortable and whole place was very quiet. Lots to look at within the building. Food was great and staff were also very helpful and friendly. Will definitely be going back if we are in that area. The museum next door was amazing too, well worth a visit.

Hotel beautiful and room top class very clean amazing slept very well. One restaurant to choose from with only selection of a la carte which is a very old fashioned way to eat , which makes us uncomfortable. We had room service which was lovely but we would have preferred to eat in a restaurant/pub which we thought there was and is still advertised on google. Also cafe is advertised until 9pm but actually closes at 4.30pm.

The accommodation was immaculately clean. Checkin was smooth and friendly, the concierge who took our bags to our room was knowledgeable and helpful. We were in two minds about eating in the restaurant but were very pleased we did the food was delicious don’t be put off by other negative reviews. All in all we had a great room and lovely food with impeccable service. They are all really pleasant and helpful. We did the tour and that was fun too. We will not hesitate to stay again.

A unique stay
Absolutely amazing place. A very unique experience for sure. We had a couples night and weren’t disappointed. What a conversion. Food was great! I would absolutely recommend and return however was very miffed at being charged a £9 service charge for being brought an iron to use! Second minor jiggle was having no mirror by the dressing table.

We stayed as a stop over after visiting the Eden project. We were really impressed by the building, service and setting. The rooms were really well presented and had all the luxuries you could ask for. The restaurant was excellent quality again helped by the really exceptional service. We look forward to returning.

A very unique hotel. The family cell is (and I think that they are all like this) three original cells knocked into one. Bathroom was lovely and spacious, only downer was that there was a long hair in the shower and in the bath. The bath only ran at two temps too; very hot or boiling, so we had to let that cool down significantly before we could use it. The “well stocked” mini bar consisted of two bottles of water; still and sparkling and two bottles of milk, very disappointing, there is more in a budget-chain hotel fridge. And the safe was already locked so we couldn’t use that. Any staff that we bumped into whilst at the hotel were incredibly friendly and helpful if we needed anything. Very quiet hotel lobby, never been in such a quiet hotel reception and it does have a wow factor as you go in. We had a delicious breakfast in the hotel but ate out in the village of St Kew for our dinner. The Champagne Bar was quiet when we were there (mid-week), but the cocktails were great and nice soft drinks for our under 18’s. All in all a lovely place to stay and enjoy some history. We did the self-guided museum tour after breakfast as we didn’t want to get our children frightened before bedtime. That was a very interesting and cool tour, I’d recommend that as part of your stay too. If you are looking for something unusual and a bit of luxury to go with it, then this is your hotel.
