The Neighborhood:
In the early 1900s, Robert Jemison Sr envisioned a highly exclusive place for Birmingham’s elite to live. This is how the neighborhood of Glen Iris came to be in 1898. First came the beautiful Glen Iris Park. Homes started being built shortly after and continued popping up into the 1940s. The houses surrounded the park, which provided scenic trails and plenty of green space for the community to enjoy. Some of Birmingham’s most prominent families have lived here, including First National Bank President W.P.G. Harding, nature writer R. DuPont Thompson and American coal magnate Henry F. DeBardeleben. Today, a great deal of the homes in Glen Iris are on the National Register of Historic Places. Historic Craftsman, Prairie and Tudor-style homes decorate the neighborhood. You’ll also find condominium units, colonial-revival townhouses, large Greek-revival estates and even multi-million-dollar Tudor-revival mansions. Due to this wide variety of housing styles and sizes, home prices in the area range from $190,000 all the way up to $2.9 million.
Children in the neighborhood attend Glen Iris Elementary School, home of the Gaters. Next is Booker T. Washington Middle School, established in 1908. After a century of service, the school built a new building in 2009. The two-story building includes 33 standard classrooms, two special education classrooms, a science lab and three computer labs. The school also boasts a media center and a 300-seat gymnasium. Teenagers attend A.H. Parker High School, which was the first public high school for Black students in Birmingham when it opened in 1900. Today the school continues its long tradition of excellence with a B-plus Niche rating in diversity.
The scenic Glen Iris Park sits amid the neighborhood’s historic district and is privately owned by the historic homes that surround it. However, there’s still an incredible park in the neighborhood open to the public. George Ward Park is an 84-acre park featuring six lighted softball diamonds, which several amateur leagues and the UAB Blazers have used. The park has a tennis center with eight hard-surface outdoor courts managed by the Birmingham Area Tennis Association. Locals can spend the day playing at the park’s 24-hole disc golf course and those with canine companions can play at the dog park. Members of the Glen Iris Neighborhood Association and the Friends of George Ward Park organization are dedicated to caring for this beloved neighborhood spot. Just next to the UAB Intramural Field is Bessie Estell Park, named after long-time educator Bessie Sears Estell who was the first African-American woman to sit on the Birmingham City Council. Kids can hang out at the playground while the vine-covered circular pavilions provide the perfect setting for escaping into a novel. The entire park was designed with wheelchair accessibility in mind, providing an outdoor space for all in the community.
Glen Iris sits right next to the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s campus, making it highly convenient for students and faculty. Even if you don’t work or study at UAB, proximity to the university means access to the beautiful campus green, college sports games and performances at Alys Robinson Stephens Performing Arts Center. Residents also have some fantastic restaurants to choose from. Giuseppe’s Café is a community favorite serving award-winning, handmade pizza or piles of delectable pasta. Seattle native Joe Williams put down roots in Alabama, opening this small Italian eatery in 2002. The spot has primarily maintained the same staff since opening, and regulars of the intimately sized restaurant are treated like family. The nearby Red Mountain Plaza shopping center provides plenty of other options like Red Sea Ethiopian Restaurant, Sneaky Pete’s Hotdogs and Full Moon Bar-be-Que. Walmart Neighborhood Market, Publix, CVS and Walgreens are also close at hand. With beautiful historic homes, scenic parks filled with activities and all the energy of UAB, Glen Iris is a wonderful Birmingham suburb to call home.
