Prud'homme Cottage: bright, private architectural cottage on Mitchell Cove

Accessible, private vacation spot on desirable Lopaus Point. This architect-designed, cozy cottage on Mount Desert's quiet side has 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, sleeps 5 comfortably, with full kitchen and washer/dryer. Located on Mitchell Cove in Bernard, secluded among the woods and meadows of Lopaus Point, just 10 minutes south of Southwest Harbor—you get the best of both worlds: the quiet and privacy to enjoy your family's time together, and immediate convenience to all the attractions of the island. Grocery, library, restaurants, water sports (canoeing, sailing, motor-boating, kayaking), swimming, and miles and miles of well-maintained hiking trails up some of the country's most beautiful and accessible mountains are within a 15-20 minute drive. And just a minute's walk down the property to Mitchell Cove brings you to half a mile of secluded and undeveloped private shingle beach. A home-base for your expeditions across the island; and a light-filled, snug residence for your family's together-time during your stay.

The master bedroom is on the ground floor; two bedrooms are upstairs, one with two twin beds, the other a single. A futon in the living room can accommodate a sixth person. Maximum number of adults is 4-5. There is a $50/night charge for each person over five. A bath with shower is on each floor.

The cottage has all modern appliances; has its own well-water and lots of hot water. Wi-Fi internet service suitable for remote work and learning is provided. A wide deck off the front balances the indoor and outdoor spaces and is great for sitting in the sun; a second deck off the kitchen is newly updated with a timber-framed pavilion roof, a grill, and furniture for outdoor meals. In the main floor's living room, a cathedral ceiling shows off the grain of the golden pine boards. A new wood-burning stove keeps the whole house warm on cooler evenings (many summers you won't need it much), and provides a natural center to game-playing, reading, or watching TV. There's ample dry firewood in the woodshed.

There's an Old Town canoe, free to use, with paddles in the cellar and life-jackets inside.

If you're considering coming in May or early June, or later in September or October, please see note below about the wood stove. It makes a big difference!

The house is very much more than the sum of its parts. It's situated on the site of the old farmhouse that farmed the Mitchell Cove area in the 19th century, when the land was all open meadows. You'll notice that it's the 'right' spot for a house—up on a little rise, with a full cellar dug into the side of the hill, and a big green lawn spreading down toward the Cove. Past the lawn, and the old apple tree, there is still open meadow to the front of the house; but now pine trees hedge off the few neighboring houses, which are distant and completely hidden from view. To the south and west is Lopaus Point and thick pine forest. The house is nestled into the corner between the old meadows and the newer forest—you're very much in your own world without being in any way constricted.

Open air, wide space, freedom to move—and the elegant concentrated space of the house—that's the feel of being here.

You'll also notice lots of little architectural details that make spending time in and around the house a real pleasure. The house was designed specifically to capture and display the best virtues of Maine's coastal summer climate. It encourages you to experience the best of what it's like to be here. During the long summer days, it's light-filled and airy. You'll want to throw open the doors and let the cooling ocean breezes waft through. Take your work out on the deck; watch the kids play soccer on the grass. Or wander down to the Cove. At nights, it's a supportive, cozy enclosure that brings everyone together around the wood stove. Cook up a seafood feast. Gather round a board-game. Curl up and watch a movie on the TV.

The house works so well in part because the floorplan is both open and separated. Communal activities will center on the first floor, where the kitchen and living room flow into one another and keep everyone connected. But if you want to get some work done, or the kids need to start a summer-reading project, or someone just wants to be on their own, you can head upstairs, close the door, and concentrate.

The place is full of memories of people doing exactly this for fifty years. I'm sure you'll quickly find your own way of being right at home.

**update for 2016 forward**

We've installed a new wood-stove this year. It's a Blaze King model (you can find the features online): very efficient, low-emissions, and easy to operate. It also has a fantastic burn-time--up to 20+ hours on a single load of wood. It makes heating the cottage during cooler spring and fall days and nights very easy and reliable. Load it up before you turn in for bed; when you wake, it's still full of coals and putting out good heat.

If you're considering renting during those earlier or later periods (May, September, October), the new stove will make a big difference in your comfort.

The property is exactly how it’s described. We did not have any problems with anything. I could tell that if we needed something it would be dealt with in a professional and timely matter! Would we rent this property again? Absolutely! For us it worked out just great! Wood stove is top of the line. The people that own this place are cool and know what’s important. Have no fear renting from them. Very chill place. Thanks!

This was our second time staying at the cottage, and it lived up to our fond memories. Several upgrades, including terrific mattresses and my favorite coffee equipment made it the perfect retreat after exploring the island. Thanks, again, for sharing this special home.

100% Perfect
This house was perfect for our family of four and could easily accommodate five. It was exactly as advertised - neat, clean and quiet. We had the cove completely to ourselves. If you're visiting this area for the first time, don't worry about the proximity to Bar Harbor and all the attractions. Short car ride with plenty to see and do along the way. The hiking trails around Long Pond are excellent. You can walk to Thurstons Lobster Pound which was our favorite meal, on the last night of our trip. The host communication was excellent, but we did not need him at all once we arrived. Everything was exactly as described and we felt right at home the moment we walked through the door. We highly recommend this place!

Wonderful week on the Quiet Side
This was our third stay at Prud'homme Cottage, and the property was as lovely and peaceful as ever. The cottage itself is an architectural gem. It's a simple cottage with a timeless design and quality craftsmanship, and fits perfectly into its surroundings. And for us the location is ideal. It's a short walk on a quiet road to beautiful Bernard and a short drive to Southwest Harbor. Mountain hikes and craggy Wonderland are within 10 minutes by car. And Mitchell Cove, a two minute walk from the house through the trees, is our place for morning coffee, afternoon canoeing, and fantastic sunsets.

Perfect cottage to explore MDI
Our stay at the Prud'homme Cottage with was fantastic for our family of four. The house is well appointed and benefits from excellent design and craftsmanship. The space is private and quiet and the sunsets at Mitchell Cove were great. The house had everything we needed, and Richard was a fantastic and responsive host. The location gave us a chance to explore Acadia's quietside, but was just close enough to everything else.

Absolute Heaven
This property was all we hoped for and more. It was ideal for our family of four. Perfect size, nice layout providing a mix of family time and privacy for the kids. The outdoor seating areas were dreamy, and the landscaping kitchen well-equipped and east to use with everything we needed (and we like to cook). Access to canoe and cove was a highlight. We had difficult travels getting to Maine (our own fault) and Richard was quick to respond to requests for information, kind, and reassuring. Would definitely stay here again!

Great Rental
House is beautifully designed, clean and comfortable. Outdoor spaces great for hanging out or entertaining friends, as is the large living/dining space with wood-burning stove. The kitchen has everything needed for cooking a variety of foods. Bedrooms designed to give each person or couple their own spaces. There are two identical bathrooms, one on each floor near bedrooms. They are small but clean and well organized. This house is perfect for a family with children or several friends.

Peaceful Home Base
Prud'homme Cottage is perfectly situated in Tremont near Southwest Harbor on the quiet side of MDI and near a cove that is a 2 minute walk from the house. It was a great home base from which to explore surrounding trails and sights. The trails in that area are less touristy and less crowded, which was exactly what we wanted. The camp itself was comfortable with plenty of space. We enjoyed sitting on the outdoor deck overlooking the meadow. We also enjoyed taking in the sunset on the cove just a few minutes away. Richard was a laid back, but responsive host who gave us lots of good insider info about things to do in the area and answered any questions we had. We enjoyed our time there tremendously.

Perfect cottage!
We have stayed at Prud'homme Cottage 2 years in a row, and we miss it immediately whenever we leave. The cottage itself is a work of simplicity and art, a perfect place to relax, think, and embark on adventures. For us, it is the perfect retreat for escaping the city and finding some harmony with nature. We love spending mornings on the beautiful decks and walking down to Mitchel Cove. After mid-day hikes around the quiet side of MDI, we walk to Thurston's for lobster or just around the beautiful village of Bernard. Our evenings involve board games, running around the back yard, and (ideally) one more trek down to the cove. We hope to go back to Prud'homme for many years.

Perfect for First Family Trip to Maine
We enjoyed this cabin on our first trip to Maine! The weather was beautiful and we loved the people and coastline of the Quietside. The caretaker Scott was wonderful and we had no issues with the property while there. Basics, directions, key access were all as listed. Beds and linens were wonderful. Kitchen was stocked. No cabinets in the entire house … all open air shelving and no AC unit. This wasn’t an issue during our stay but good to know! We did find the access to Mitchell Cove further away than the listing provided. It was accessible from the cabin but we felt like we were walking on others property to get to it. There was a nice small public beach just down the street. Thurstons down the street had the best lobster on the island! Also recommend a visit to the Quietside Art gallery and Island Cruise nature boat ride.

Great for Families!
This was our family's 6th trip to Mount Desert Island/Acadia and the cottage met our needs perfectly. Our family is young (8 year old, 5 year old and 4 year old, plus a dog) and the kids had so much fun running around the property and exploring the cove while my husband and I sat on the deck to read, enjoy a drink or simply prepare dinner. We ate outside almost every evening and would stargaze with the kids into the night. I have never seen shooting stars like I did on this trip. We are committed "quiet side" people and don't mind the longer drive to Bar Harbor or some of the more touristy areas of the island. Moreover, Richard was a pleasure to coordinate with - everything was seamless - and we had the opportunity to take advantage of the canoe and kayaks during our stay. Such a well-rounded trip, and I would not hesitate to rent again. Enjoy your trip!

Great house for getting away
Beautiful property. House is easy to use, great kitchen with great layout. The washing machine, linens and dishwasher were great additions to make for light packing. The cove was great to explore-- although our week was warm and the mosquitos fierce on the walk there! Bring rubber boots and kids can explore into the water and mud for great wildlife. At sunset the birds dive for fish, which was super cool. For the house-- it is very isolated and private. DARK at night, which was great for us. Sunset side so you didn't get sunrise right INTO the windows allowing some later sleep (minimal curtains). Set up with bathrooms and bedrooms great for families. We liked being away from busy side of island-- and did lots of exploring at Echo lake, sea wall, sea harbor, etc. Richard was a great host. Issues with wifi on arrival-- which he had promptly fixed. Prompt responses for questions. We did the recommended boat tour-- and it was great. Boys also climbed with Atlantic Climbing School - and they have you repelling down Otter cliffs right over the ocean! (which needless to say way a big crowd pleaser). Overall a great week. Other tips: 1- stop at the visitors center on Thompson island off the bridge and get a visitors pass in the park, and quiet side hiking guide which contains a tide chart so you can plan your cove visits, your visits to thunder rocks, etc, 2- go early if you want to park at sand beach or echo lake. We were there in peak season and parking in bar harbor and park was no joke. However, the swimming at Echo ledges was more fun (no beach) than the beach swimming at Echo lake anyway. 3- Beehive isn't worth it, and it is super dangerous. Gorham Mt. and continuing down Cadillac cliffs trail are way better views. 4- Little Notch bakery is a wonderful in Southeast harbor-- french bread/pastry by french staff. 5- Food prices are high on the island, we stopped in Bangor at the Hannaford and filled the cooler. The IGA on 102 had reasonable selection, but limited. 6- Do not miss the blueberry soda.

Sunsets and Lobster!
Our family of four had an incredible stay in Acadia at the Prud'homme cottage! We stayed for a week in late July and we were really pleased. The listing on VRBO is completely accurate. Even more, we were so happy with the open space of the cottage. You enter into a terrific country kitchen that is separated from the rest of the home by a counter. The kitchen is well stocked with everything you'll need. Meal preparation was a lot of fun since our family was all together with one or two people cooking and others in the living area. The living area included a small dining table and ample seating: a futon, a slider chair, and an oversized loveseat. The high ceiling in the living area helped the entire living area strike a balance between spacious, yet also felt cozy. An additional plus about the cottage is the arrangement of bedrooms and bathrooms. The master bedroom is downstairs and there is a bathroom on the first floor. Upstairs are two bedrooms and a bathroom. Kids upstairs, parents downstairs. Wonderful! The addition of the washer and dryer on the first floor also really helped the comfort of our stay. In terms of location: the cottage offers plenty of privacy. There are homes nearby, but none visible from the house, lawn or decks. It's a bit of a drive from the cottage to Bar Harbor which we did on two occasions, but Southwest Harbor is nearby and that's hustle and bustle enough. Mitchell Cove is a very secluded beach. It's rocky, but our kids loved exploring for hermit crabs and skipping rocks. Most importantly, Mitchell Cove has awe inspiring sunsets! We'd walk down to the beach for the sunsets and have the place to ourselves. Another plus about the location is it's within walking distance to Thurston's Lobster Pound. We only went once during our stay, but it's the real deal and we should have gone again. Another cool thing we did regarding location was to take a sea kayak tour out of Southwest Harbor. This was just a short drive from the cottage. Ultimately, the cottage's design and setting is the idyllic Maine and Acadia cottage. We're really grateful for our stay.
