Mainly, it highlights the majestic Benicadell, summit of the homonymous mountain that forms part of the Sierra de Mariola, and that acts as the natural border between the provinces of Valencia and Alicante, separating the regions of the Vall d'Albaida and the Comtat.
Its slopes were already inhabited in prehistoric times, as attested by the archaeological site of "la Covalta", located at 889 meters above sea level, on the northern slopes of the Sierra de Benicadell. It is the remains of a walled Iberian settlement that occupied the top of a hill with abrupt cuts on its north face.
The weapons, utensils and ornaments found during the excavations are exhibited in the Museum of Prehistory of the Diputación de Valencia. Under the same summit of the Covalta, and in its northern slope, is a large elongated cave (about thirty meters long by two high, and which gives its name to the mountain), which was already explored by the great traveler of the 18th century, the botanist Cavanilles.
The Benicadell is also linked to the figure of the Cid, since this legendary Castilian knight fortified an existing Arab castle on the heights of this mountain range in the yearThe "Cantar del Mio Cid" cites these beautiful places with the name of "peña Cadiella. "
In the Benicadell there are several cellars, refrigerators or "pous de Neu", known as the cava or fridge Benicadell, Dalt, Baix, Xamarra, Corral de Diego and Lloma Solaneta. It is one of the favorite places for Valencian mountaineers, in addition to the nearby Sierra Mariola.
The most usual itinerary to ascend to the summit of Benicadell starts from Beniatjar, center of the protected area L'ombría del Benicadell, ninety-four kilometers from Valencia and thirteen from Albaida (in the direction of Gandia). From Beniatjar to the summit of Benicadell (at 1,104 meters of altitude) a drop of more than seven hundred meters must be overcome, taking about two and a half hours to complete the journey.
