Estado Luna Azul: Tranquil, Elevated Pool Estate Breathtaking Ocean/Sunset Views

Estado Luna Azul is a State of Mind. An elevated Status, a psycho-physio State of Tranquility. Sure, there's a house on top of a ridge that is a magnet for tropical breezes ... and the views drown your eyes in beauty while the sounds of nature lull you to sleep and wake you up. The smell of ocean mixed with tropical dry forest is intoxicating. Sun on your shoulders, soak in the pool, cooling breeze on wet skin, a hot outdoor shower poolside - These are the enticements of Estado Luna Azul. This state of being is not on a tourist beach, nor in an air conditioned hotel with crowds ... just you, the sea, the air, the sun. An entanglement with Guanacaste's nature that is as comfortable as it is energizing.

More than half of our guests are returns booking through several other means and often staying for extended periods. While Vrbo now excludes these from posting a review, we let our looong history of positive reviews speak for itself. This multi-acre estate is optimal for groups of up to six guests. It can stretch to accommodate groups of up to 10 at an additional cost of $20/person/night for groups larger than 6. 10 guests is an absolute maximum - the entire deposit will be retained and all services withdrawn if exceeding 10 persons. This because we like to keep the place nice! Decor and furnishings are family friendly. Luna Azul comes complete with a separately housed caretaker. Ask them about fresh fruit from the property, beach/panga fishing, massage, horseback riding … all arranged with ease while maximizing your beach, pool, and sunset time!

Our location makes this an adventure property. If you are not familiar with the term “bad roads bring good people”, you may want to book elsewhere. This is nature meets rustic comfort. We’ve worked to put our spaces as close to nature as possible without the trap of gazing from an air conditioned room. Yes, we get fewer bookings because we decline to install AC, but our long-term, return business and vast majority of positive reviews speak to the comfort of our ridge-line, tropical-breeze-swept, shaded-pool oasis with an unparalleled view. The long gravel driveway up to this perch requires rudimentary driving skills and 4WD traction. It’s possible with 2WD in dry season … but only with skill … and the surrounding gravel roads are pretty tough on low clearance vehicles.

The environment creates an opportunity to indulge across a full spectrum - from solitude to elegance to local nightlife at several bars in the area. Rather than retreat to air conditioned isolation, the house is designed for life 'in the breeze' - soaking in the rich tropical sights, sounds and smells inaccessible to those that decline to adjust to equatorial climates. That's not to say comfort is secondary! Shade, pools, warm outdoor showers, hammocks and fans are strategically maintained to encourage guests to constantly seek interaction with the unique experiences this insulated, elevated refuge presents: monkeys howling at sunrise, tree frogs singing at night, Mr. BIGuana standing watch from the Almendra tree poolside, birds playing in the trees in the late afternoon shade, raptors, vultures and storks seeking thermals coming up and banking against the updraft right in front of your nose as you relax in the pool ... ya can't get that stuff in a hotel room! We call it watching "Tico TV"!

There's plenty of space for two families with kids to enjoy lounging by the pool, swinging in hammocks, cooking, swimming, floating and relaxing on top of this comfortable, breeze-swept ridgeline ... away from it all but with assistance at the ready should you need it. A 'jungle' trail has been gently maintained on the property below the house for morning walks, wildlife viewing, and touring the dozens of different fruit trees on property - guided by onsite staff if desired! A favorite routine is to pack up coolers full of goodies and sand chairs, head to one of the local beaches for a morning surf/swim then return to the pool, shade and breeze for the afternoon. Simple, adventurous, satisfying.

If surfing is what you're looking for, look no further. Read the swell over coffee in the morning from this perfect vantage point. Many breaks in the area are yours to explore - alone! Just a beginner? Soft top surfboards and our recommended beach are a sure recipe for success. There's a wide range of beaches and headlands within a 30 minute drive on easy going country roads. There are left points, San Onofre style breaks, beach breaks and rock reef breaks easily accessible year round from a comfortable center point. Fantastic family surf adventures waiting for those ready to venture out. Playa Coyote has a gentle sloping, sheltered beach that is great for whitewash adventures and the inexperienced. Grab one of the soft-top surfboards at the house and get pics of the kids on their first stand-up! Playa San Miguel has a more challenging wave and great beach play family-style. This is our go-to beach for surf, coolers of beer, fresh fruit and lazy mornings in the shade of coco palms while the tide gets just right for a paddle out. Smaller surf is beginner friendly, sizeable combo swells and big tide changes can challenge any surfing level. Playa Camaronal is a fantastic "Old Man's" style break that can hold pretty good size. Limited shade and a heavily sloped beach make this primarily a surfer's beach. Playa Camaronal access requires no river crossings so it's ready to go even during wet season ... 20 minutes from the house. There are shade opportunities and a turtle sanctuary for those not surfing. Playa Corozalito has some tide sensitive breaks, shade and gentle slope with tide pools that are fun to explore - our Info Packet will tell you how to dial up a memorable family day at any beach.

Food!: The convenience of breakfast at your own pace and time is invaluable. The morning light playing on the estuary below is a constant distraction. Local groceries in Pueblo Nuevo, Bejuco, Corozalito, San Francisco de Coyote mean fresh produce and provisions for any level of culinary activity desired. Very convenient to stop and grab a cool drink and any items you need on the way home from the beaches. Don't feel like cooking? A wide range of dining experiences are available within 15 minutes from the house - breakfast lunch or dinner. Cooking services at the house, food delivery, tamale orders are all possible to arrange - but not guaranteed - during your stay or prior to arrival if desired.

Come enjoy 'El Campo' - the countryside - where Ticos come to relax during their holidays. You'll leave feeling refreshed and amazed at how immersion in local environment and culture can invigorate the soul!

View and location spectacular but aspects of the accommodation are run down
This was our first visit to Costa Rica. Wanted to be away from tourists and experience the beauty and nature of this country. Mike's home location was everything we wanted. The pros: location and view. The views are unbelievable. I could spend hours looking at the birds and butterflies. You truly feel like you are alone in this beautiful spot. The bedrooms / bathrooms were good. Tony the care taker was very helpful. Cons: our visit was during the rainy season. So much of the dislikes was related to bugs issue. During the day, bugs were no more bother some then you would expect in a tropical location. However night time was a different thing. When the nighttime fell and the use of lights in the kitchen/bedrooms was necessary (to see for cooking etc) the amount of small gnats that would cover the ceiling was unbelievable. We finally found it unbearable to eat at the kitchen table because the gnats would drop from the ceiling in to our food. We finally moved to eating all dinners on the couches away from the ceiling light. Some money needs to be invested in new family room furniture and pots/pans. Both of these are old and worn out. Money spent on sealing windows and doors might decrease gnats, centipedes, spiders to get in to the living space. We are avid overlanders. So bugs is nothing new to us. But unacceptable when paying this kind of money to be indoors.

Great View but hard to get to
Over all the house was good. The views were fantastic. Just a couple of things kept me from giving this house a 10 was there is no air conditioning which for the most part was ok but at night there were a lot of noises and that is to be expected because you are in a jungle but you couldn't shut the windows to keep the noise down. Its a little hard to get to as the only roads that lead you there are all dirt paths with lots of pot holes.

Wonderful ‘off the beaten path’ Home
Gorgeous views! The most incredible sunrise and sunset views! Howler monkeys wake you in the morning. Birds glide round you through the day making you feel like you’re living on a perch on a cliff. The views are endless. And you can see them right from the kitchen. The pool is gorgeous. Very clean and well kept and a nice size. Kitchen well equipped though no oven. They got a new barbecue while we were there. Nearby beaches were gorgeous! San Miguel beautiful!! Coyote best soft waves to surf. Family oriented beaches. Property is remote and there are many critters from frogs to caterpillars. A scorpion kept coming back and so we finally got rid of it. But be prepared to see bugs. Property manager is a wonderful fellow!! He and his wife made us Christmas tamales and brought a Christmas tree—so kind. Water from shower was hot most times. No ac was not a problem with breeze. Steep but easy road to property. The travel from Sámara was no problem. South to Santa Teresa after coyote there were river crossings but many people doing them. Loved this place.

This is our second stay at Luna Azul. We visited with a larger group in 2016 and knew we had to stay when we returned to the area. Unfortunately there were only 2 nights that weren’t booked during our stay otherwise we would have stayed much longer. The view of the property is amazing and the infinity pool takes perfect advantage of the view. The outside area is so relaxing with hammocks and chairs and great breezes. Kitchen is well stocked, beds are comfortable and caretaker is friendly and available. One drawback is that the area is very remote. Love the peace and quiet but need to ensure you plan your groceries etc. A few nice beaches a short drive away.

Can I give it 10 stars?
If you're looking for the Four Seasons, keep looking. But if you want a genuine CR experience with an amazing view, great owners and caretaker then book Luna Azul. It was exactly was I was looking for - private, remote but with everything you need. Unbelievable, quiet beaches within 10 min drive and wonderful sunsets by the pool. Beautiful property with fruit trees and abundant wildlife. I saw macaws, deer, iguanas and howler monkeys just on the Luna Azul grounds. I'll be back and you should go!

Amazing stay!
Had an absolutely wonderful stay here! The pool and view are incredible. It’s hard to tell from the photos how big the pool is—it’s not for swimming laps but it’s a very nice size for floating and splashing around. The water temperature was a very nice 84/85F—just perfect for floating for hours. The caretaker and Domino the dog were fantastic. I was concerned about acclimating to the heat since we were coming from Colorado in February but it really was not an issue. I highly recommend doing a tour with Mike at the Jungle Butterfly Farm—probably one of the best tours I’ve ever done. Thanks for sharing this amazing house!

True immersive experience
I'll start by saying the pictures of the views don't do this property the justice it deserves. Breathtaking is an understatement. The pool is also substantially better than what pictures portray so you can expect to truly relish in your time outdoors. The other major bonus is the indoor/outdoor kitchen so you can enjoy cooking without feeling enclosed. We had a hiccup during our check-in due to the fact that the groundskeeper and cleaners were expecting us a day later. That was tough after a very long drive through rural coastland with kids. Also, be prepared that your access to good food options, including fresh groceries, is very limited so I recommend this place for people who genuinely enjoy cooking (the kitchen has everything you need, including seasonings), probably less so for those who want to experience local cuisine. Overall, we had an outstanding experience thanks to Antonio (caretaker) and the true uniqueness of this property compared to other more tourist-safe options.

The most amazing property
Having traveled all over the world, when I came across this property I knew it was going to be phenomenal, from the pictures alone. When we arrived, it was more breathtaking than we had imagined!!! the property is pristinely managed by the on-site Caretaker and his wife. They are fantastic people and their main goal was to make sure we had everything we needed for our entire stay, which they achieved and exceeded our expectations throughout our entire 12-day stay. The owners of the property stayed in touch with me throughout the stay as well to ensure our scheduled massages and meals went without a hitch, and there were no issues. The area is great for adventure seekers and folks looking for a peaceful retreat. We spent several days lounging on the property, and other days experiencing some of the amazing tours in the area such as gyrocopters, deep sea fishing, four wheelers, horseback riding, and the list goes on. There are several highly rated restaurants in the area as well, and the food was fantastic everywhere we went. The owners have worked to provide a tremendously expansive information packet to provide you after you book to streamline travel and things to know in the area, ranging from activities to groceries and fuel. In summary, the majestic appeal of Luna Azul and the people responsible for making our stay so enjoyable and relaxing have made it impossible not to Re-book as soon as we possibly can. I see several more trips to this property in our future! 100% 10 out of 10. You will not be disappointed.

Highly recommend!!
We absolutely loved staying at this home! The home was very clean, well maintained, and comfortable. The description of this property, including driving here was spot on. (The driveway is steep but once you drive it for the first time it is easy, we never even had to use 4x4) Antonio, the on-site manager was amazing. He kept the pool and outdoor living space nice and clean. He talked with us about the area, places to go, the animals, and living here. He knew we were excited to see the monkeys, birds and different wildlife and would let us know when they were close by. We could sit and watch to howler monkeys eat and frolic from the front yard! It is a very laid back destination with really nice people, beautiful beaches, a few restaurants and a little store just down the road. If you want an amazing place to relax and explore, I highly recommend this home!

Highway to Hell
The driveway to this house was the highway to hell! It was super scary and not paved, no matter how many times you went up and down you do not get used to it, God Forbid you get a rainstorm or have to drive up this driveway in the dark. The house needs a lot of maintenance, water pressure in one of the bathrooms was nonexistent for hot water. No air conditioning makes sleeping there not a pleasant experience, no reason why he couldn’t install mini splits many houses around there have them. You sweat at night and then you get cold because you’re wet, and all your clothes become moist in your suitcase. Of course that was my mistake for not reading clearly that there is no air conditioning. The main feature of the house is the gorgeous views , and the swimming pool is very nice too however, the pool light only work the first day we were there, after that no good, send the owner a message through WhatsApp as requested and no answer, didn’t even bother to respond. The groundskeeper Antonio was a dream, he was super super nice and very helpful. The town around here is very isolated and to do anything you have to drive more than 1.5 hours on horrible roads. Do not attempt to go to this house without four-wheel-drive. Very disappointing in our stay. The owner also keeps the washing machine locked up so you have no access to it unless you ask the groundskeeper to use it however there is no dryer. Wish I could add pictures so you can compare how it really looks to what he has on his website.

Amazing sunrises and sunsets
This was by far the best place we have stayed in a long time. Beautiful, secluded, amazing 360 degree views at all hours, comfortable beds, well equipped kitchen, full bathrooms in every room, and did I say amazing views and fruit trees throughout?! Antonio (on-site manager) was welcoming, helpful, thoughtful, kept to himself unless we needed something, and passionate about the property. We drove up the driveway and immediately jumped out of the car and ran to take pictures of the sunset it was so beautiful. We had some tire issues and Antonio took us to a local shop and we got our tire fixed. We purchased some tamales and they were made locally and were super tasty. We brought food to cook, had cocktails in the infinity pool, went to the beach, hiked the property built and guided by Antonio, and even got on-site massages! It was the perfect vacation spot! The only regret is not staying longer and not ordering food far enough ahead of time so we could eat more local food.

One of the most beautiful homes with an amazing view and good hearted care taker
Luna Azul (Blue Moon) is a nice 3 BR home overlooking grasslands and beach on the west, and mountains on the east. Its surrounded by fruit and coconut trees and beautiful and wonderful flora and fauna. Every morning you will wake up to birds and monkeys and warm sun light through the eastern windows. There is a terrace, that is where you want to be in the morning with your cup of coffee. And during sunset spend it in the pool watching the sun go down over the beach. We enjoyed looking at beautiful white cows and horses grazing in the fields below. Beaches Bejuco and Corazalito are close by to the house. Both are good places to go. Up north is the beautiful Carrillo and Punta Islita. Down south is the beaches of San Miguel (surfing) and Cayote. The house has a very well equipped kitchen and other amenities. Please keep in mind this is country side and up hill. The care taker's house is few feed downhill and Antonio is a wonderful person and very helpful, we do not speak Spanish yet, but with help of google translate we were able to communicate at ease. The infinity pool with an outdoor shower is remarkable. The cloths line with clips in the terrace helps during long stays.

Getting there was an experience. Be prepared for a lot of unpaved roads. However, the drive is so worth it to stay here. The views are breathtaking, the house was spotless, & the pool glorious. We were hoping for a peaceful, quiet vacation to rest & recharge. This property more than fit the bill. And Antonio, the caretaker, is the greatest find of all time. He is so helpful & caring about anything you might need. He even came to get us when he saw a troop of howlers in a tree right by the the drive. It was fantastic! Lastly, it wouldn’t be fair to not mention Antonio’s dog, Domino, who he graciously shared with us. He would just appear to check on & give us some wonderful doggie loving. Truly an amazing stay.

Remote Relaxation
We just finished an outstanding stay at Luna Azul in December 2019. The house was very clean and comfortable and the pool, deck and and the view to the ocean were spectacular. Although it feels remote when driving to the house, we found that local restaurants and places to buy groceries and things were easily accessible. Playa San Miguel was an easy 10 minute drive away. Mike was a great communicator and provided detailed answers to all of my many questions (his guide to the property had an enormous amount of detail) and his local caretaker, Antonio, was very helpful with local knowledge and activities. We are already hoping to return again next year!
