Oklahoma Wesleyan University extends deep appreciation to Barry and Joy Buell for their generous gift of this historic house, designed by architect Charles Dilbeck in 1945.
Formerly the residence of the Buell family until 1978, the house underwent a transformative restoration in 2023 to become the Mission Lodge at OKWU.
A Touch of History: Charles Dilbeck Ranch House
In 1945, Newell G. Welty embarked on constructing an extraordinary residence at the crossroads of the old Tulsa Road and Hillcrest Drive. Acclaimed architect Charles Dilbeck, rooted in Tulsa, envisioned a "Mission Ranch House." The deliberate vintage aesthetics, uneven floors, and rustic stone exterior added a unique charm.
The Welty family called this house home until 1950, passing it on to Albert E. Buell, a chemical engineer, and his wife Bernice. The Buells, custodians until 1978, played a pivotal role in shaping the Buell House's narrative. Albert’s son Barry Owen Buell and his wife, Joy, continued this legacy, leaving behind a mark of intellect, ethics, and community service.
A New Legacy: Mission Lodge at OKWU
The Parsons Foundation was honored for the generous grant to transform the Mission Lodge (dedicated March 7, 2024), preserving its unique history. This project embodies a pioneer spirit and community engagement, ensuring Oklahoma Wesleyan University’s impactful mission for new generations.
