I had a wonderful stay at this hotel! The staff were exceptionally friendly and welcoming, making us feel right at home. The spa facilities were a real highlight—so relaxing and luxurious. The food was absolutely superb, with a high-end dining experience that exceeded expectations. The location was perfect, offering easy access to nearby attractions. Overall, it was a really nice experience, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a top-notch stay.
On first impression, we started off not great as there was a mixup. If you bring a dog you MUST book a dog friendly room - not just let them know a few days before as they won’t let you bring your dog if a dog-friendly room isn’t free.
They were willing to discuss which I appreciated but I still couldn’t bring my dog.
The room I got, was the one above the kitchen, which meant between 8pm and 11pm I smelled cigarette smoke from staff and heard conversation outside. We reported this to manager and his first comment was to speak with staff. It didn’t work as it happened again the second night. My husband went downstairs to tell reception again and it finally stopped and didn’t continue the last day we were there. They offered a complimentary drink in our room, which was kind and thoughtful.
So all in all - I appreciated the responsiveness after our pushing, but I think the staff need some training on courtesies regarding noise and smoke given the kitchen is below one guest room.
Otherwise the amenities were very nice. Last comment. Go for the full English at breakfast for a substantive meal, otherwise the portions strangely give you ‘military rations’ vibes (I.e. bland handful of green peas atop dry toast with poached eggs - strange item?). Anyway - all in all favorite was the spa facilities and the location in Grasmere. Thanks for a pretty much pleasant experience.
We only stayed one night but found the hotel delightful. We had stayed before but it was approaching 20 years ago. It was good then, but has been improved with well appointed rooms and a new conservatory restaurant overlooking the gardens which are alongside the River Rothay. Dinner was excellent and breakfast was of a good standard too.
The ‘deluxe’ room was not what we expected. We had issues to be sorted from the minute we arrived in our room. Needed to ask for an extra table lamp in order to use the desk in a dark corner. Toilet was permanently flushing causing noise and wasting water. Television needed connecting properly so no television for our first evening. Bathroom was very grubby. Wash hand basin tap came off showering the whole bathroom. Noise during night sounding like a pump which disturbed our sleep. Finally, not impressed with breakfasts. Had to ask for bananas each day. Had to ask for honey. Choices were very limited.
As a regular in the Lake District, my husband and I decided to stay at Rothay Gardens. Check in was functional but not particularly welcoming. Not informed of vip credit until departure. The room was clean and tidy, furniture tired and the room was small. I would suggest that the compulsory service charge is just put in the price of drinks and food. Overall, a functional stay, but would stay elsewhere in the future. were I felt my stay was better value and customer service was of a greater standard
No lift so it’s an inconvenience walking up and down flights of stairs. Low beam on the ceiling, really banged my head on it during the night.
Bathroom could do with being upgraded slightly. Looks tired.
The spa could do with a bit of upgrading. It would be nice to be able to order drinks to it.
Nice location.
We stayed for one night in the lodge & it was beyond outstanding! There was only 4 of us but it can be booked for upto 6 people. It was immaculate and well kitted out with really nice furnishings that had a luxurious feel. It was the comfiest & best nights sleep I’ve had during any stay anywhere. The staff were excellent and they gave us great directions up to the local Tarn which was a nice walk with kids. We were even able to take a cold dip in a fall on the way to the top thanks to the information & route that the gentleman checking us in shared with us. Staff were beyond helpful & welcoming. We would highly recommend if you want to stay in a beautiful setting with great facilities and incredible customer service & in a great location then I would highly recommend booking.
Perfect location just on the edge of the centre of Grasmere (a short stroll), next to the river and a beautiful backdrop. Classic room was small but cosy, with character and a nice large bathroom. The view from the room could have been better as you looked out on the road, although it was nice to see the hills in the distance. Some hotel storage containers immediately below detracted from the view. The hotel public areas were nicely furnished. The highlight was the marvellous spa facility, which is an 'outhouse' with a backdrop to the hills and a lovely outdoor space for relaxing whilst looking on to the well maintained gardens. It was also nice to be able to get a drink from the bar to sit outside the spa. Shame the aromatherapy room wasn't functioning. Our main dissapointment with the hotel was breakfast - the service was frustrating - twice we asked for a particular table (that were available) and was told no - in one case because the table was for three people (there were two of us) and in the other case it was because the table was 'not made up' (which it subsequently was for guests who sat down shortly after) - not what you expect from a 4 star hotel. As for the food - the continental range could be better and my wife struggled with the runny eggs (arguably personal preference). We just didnt feel the breakfast/service was quite up to the standard you would expect for this type of property. Despite this, we enjoyed our stay at Rothay Garden in beautiful Grasmere!
