The Neighborhood:
Brownside Chapel is located in the village of Leadgate, two miles from the charming market town of Alston.

Situated in the heart of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Alston is perched at one of the highest points in the country, so visitors are offered breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding moorlands and dales. Nestled within this rugged terrain, the town has a rich history dating back to the Roman era when it served as a lead mining centre.

The cobbled streets of Alston are lined with well-preserved stone buildings that reflect its historical significance. The town's Market Cross, a Grade II listed structure, stands as a testament to its market town status and has been a focal point for locals and visitors alike for centuries.

Alston's character is deeply intertwined with the landscape, providing a gateway for outdoor enthusiasts exploring the Pennine Way and the South Tynedale Railway. The latter is a narrow-gauge heritage railway that winds its way through the picturesque South Tyne Valley, offering a scenic journey for tourists.

As a destination, Alston appeals to those seeking a tranquil escape, with its blend of natural beauty, historical charm, and a welcoming community that makes it a distinctive gem in the Cumbrian landscape.

Getting Around:
The closest railway station to Leadgate can be found in Armathwaite, 16 miles away from the village. Part of the Settle to Carlisle line, you’ll find direct access to Carlisle, Morecambe, Lancaster, Skipton and Leeds.

Alston forms part of the heritage South Tynedale Railway which takes a journey past the original terminus at Gilderdale, on through Kirkhaugh and Lintley to the village of Slaggyford.
